Moviegoers Run Screaming From Paranormal Activity 4 ... After It's Accidentally Shown To Kids

0
0

THEY RAN FROM the cinema screaming, not because the film is rubbish (we can’t make that call because we haven’t seen it yet), it’s because the cinema goers were children.

The Daily Mail and This is Nottingham report that an audience of 25 had settled down to watch Madagascar 3, NOT Paranormal Activity 4 at a Cineworld in Nottingham at 10am on a Saturday morning .

So, they were expecting this:

But they got this:

Parents reported that as soon as the opening scenes of Paranormal Activity began, they knew something was wrong, and the children began screaming and crying.

Cineworld have apologised to those involved, who were given refunds on their tickets. They were also offered the chance to see a later screening of Madagascar 3, but it’s possible the kids weren’t overly eager to go back into a cinema so soon after their ordeal.

The opening scenes of Paranormal Activity 4 feature a bloodied corpse flying towards the screen. That’s a far cry from the cute animals of Madagascar.

10 Things We Learned From Watching The 'Iron Man 3' Trailer

0
0

pepper potts iron man 3

If you're like us, you've watched the "Iron Man 3" trailer more than once.

The relatively somber picture of a dark Tony Stark left us with a lot of questions.

What's the deal with Guy Pearce's role in the film? Why are there so many Iron Man suits? And, who's the girl making moves on Stark?

If the trailer left you confused as to where the sequel is heading, we've broken it down for you including some answers to the very vague released plot and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it giant stuffed pink bunny and tattoo.

The film will follow the "Extremis" storyline.

There's a six-story comic from 2005-2006 follows the invention of a serum / virus, "Extremis." The serum is supposed to be used solely for military purposes to engineer a Super Soldier.

Parts of the "Extremis" storyline were used in the first film for Stark's origin story (the bomb exploding during his tour in Afghanistan, taking deathly shrapnel to the chest, etc.).

The serum basically reboots the entire human system with better organs, faster reflexes and healing abilities among other heightened senses. Sounds great until you find out it's only compatible with about 2.5 percent of the population.

We're betting the film will most likely follow the fallout of how this serum affects Aldrich Killian (involved with its creation), Tony Stark, the government, and particularly how The Mandarin sees it as beneficial.

There's more than one villain.

Sure, Ben Kingsley is being touted as the main bad guy, Mandarin.

However, how many superhero movies three films deep (Spider-Man, TDKR) do you know to play ball with one main antagonist?

We got a look at Guy Pearce who will be playing the role of Aldrich Killian, the geneticist who serves as one of the bad guys in the "Extremis" story arc.

As well, comic character Eric Slavin (James Badge) will be introduced in the film. In the comics, he goes on to become a RoboCop-esque cyborg villain Coldblood.

Pepper Potts gets kidnapped.

Could she be strapped to some sort of "Extremis" mechanism?

William Faulkner Estate Suing Sony Over Quote In 'Midnight In Paris'

Midnight in Paris

"Midnight in Paris" won Woody Allen the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay this year, but not everyone was happy with the film.

The estate of Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning writer William Faulkner is suing Sony, the film's studio, for copyright infringement after the critically acclaimed film used a quote without permission.

The quote, spoken by Gil Pender, played by Owen Wilson, is from a passage in Faulkner’s "Requiem for a Nun," which reads: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

In the film, Wilson's character says, “The past is not dead! Actually, it's not even past. You know who said that? Faulkner. And he was right. And I met him, too. I ran into him at a dinner party.”

William FaulknerBut according to the six-page complaint filed by Faulkner Literary Rights LLC:

“The use of the infringing quote and of William Faulkner’s name in the infringing film is likely to cause confusion, to cause mistake, and/or to deceive the infringing film's viewers as to a perceived affiliation, connection or association between William Faulkner and his works, on the one hand, and Sony, on the other hand.”

Faulkner Literary Rights LLC. is suing Sony Classics for “damages, disgorgement of profits, costs and attorney fees.”

"Midnight In Paris" was Woody Allen’s highest-grossing film ever, bringing in over $151 million worldwide, though he was not personally named as a defendant.

Theaters Fall Quiet Before Hurricane Sandy's Landfall–Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

0
0

Argo

It's uncertain how much Hurricane Sandy preparation up much of the east coast affected the box office–AMC began closing many theaters in NJ, NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, and the D.C./Baltimore area–but it was an extremely slow weekend at theaters.

Despite four new releases, no new film managed to gross $10 million. The highest-grossing film for the weekend earned slightly more than $12 million.

Gerard Butler's surfing film "Chasing Mavericks" failed to make a splash earning $2.2 million. The Fox film cost an estimated $20 million to produce.

Meanwhile, the next Bond film, "Skyfall" is tracking well two weeks ahead of its U.S. release. Overseas, it has earned $77 million opening weekend.

Out of the top ten this week are "Looper" after five weeks, Disney's "Frankenweenie," and "Pitch Perfect."

Here are this week's winners and losers:

10. Nickelodeon's try at a grown-up tween film "Fun Size" just managed to make it into the top ten earning $4 million.

9. Summit's "Alex Cross" drops sharply in week two earning $5 million. To date, the film has earned $19.3 million of its $35 million budget.

8. Meanwhile, Summit's horror flick "Sinister" narrowly beats "Cross" with $5.07 million. In three weeks, the movie has managed to pull in more than $39.5 million on a $3 million budget.

7. Kevin James' "Here Comes the Boom" stays in the same place at $5.5 million this weekend.

5. Horror flick "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" ties with "Taken 2" in its opening weekend grossing $8 million of its estimated $20 million.

5. "Taken 2" manages to only fall three spots also earning $8 million. Worldwide, Liam Neeson's action thriller has "taken" more than $315 million.

4. "Paranormal Activity 4" falls from the top spot this week. The fourth film in the franchise dropped 70.1 percent earning $8.6 million this weekend.

3. Halle Berry and Tom Hanks' "Cloud Atlas" debuted to a week $9.4 million.

2. Adam Sandler's "Hotel Transylvania" is still surging at theaters thanks to a 262 theater bump. The film earned $9.5 million in week five to bring its U.S. total to $130.4 million.

1. It's been a long time coming, but Ben Affleck's "Argo" finally earns the top spot with $12.3 million. In three weeks, the film has grossed $60.7 million, surpassing its estimated $44.5 million budget.

Update: Kimmel Canceled & How Hurricane Sandy Is Affecting Hollywood Production In NYC

0
0

John Cusack 2012

UPDATE: Jimmy Kimmel's Brooklyn show Monday night has been canceled. Letterman and Fallon will film without audiences. The "Seal Team 6" screening in DC has been postponed.

***

Hurricane Sandy may be hitting the Northeast, but her impact is reaching even Hollywood.

From canceled film premieres and permits to theaters going dark, here's how the Frankenstorm is affecting Hollywood productions on the East Coast:

  • The show must go on for late-night! New York-based late night shows "Late Show with David Letterman" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" will still tape Monday for broadcast later in the night. "We will be doing the show tomorrow night no matter what," Fallon Tweeted Sunday.
  • Comic Louis C.K. has postponed two New York stand-up shows until March 2nd, posting on his website: "I thought about this very carefully and I really started to worry about making 4300 people come into midtown manhattan on Sunday night, which is just when the stormatron 5000 is supposed to crush our empire. new york state has ordered the s[h]utdown of all mass transit (subways, buses and commuter trains) as of 7pm Sunday night. If it's any consolation, I'm eating a pretty staggering fee for canceling the show. But I can take it. What I can't take is the thought that there's a CHANCE 4300 people will be in danger trying to get home from my stupid show."
  • Production on the Connecticut-based indie film "After the Fall," starring David Duchovny, has shut down temporarily. Producer Anthony Mastromauro told THR: "We have decided to cancel tomorrow as all indications are that the storm will hit us in some capacity and I cannot put any of my crew or actors in harms way."
  • TV news organizations are in disaster protocol, meaning only essential regular broadcast personnel are expected to report to work.

And, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Focus Features has suspended the New York City premiere of its Oscar hopeful, Anna Karenina, which was set for Tuesday night in Union Square. Director Joe Wright and star Keira Knightley were set to attend, and the distributor is working to reschedule for another evening"

Monday's New York screening of the Denzel Washington starrer Flight has also been grounded. And Universal cancelled its Monday screening of The Man With the Iron Fist. But perhaps in a nod to the macho Navy SEALS, the Weinstein Co. and National Geographic are staying the course with their Tuesday premiere of SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden.

'Avengers' Director Joss Whedon Predicts A Zombie Apocalypse If Mitt Romney Becomes President

0

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon, director of "The Avengers" and creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," is definitely not a Romney supporter.

He recently recorded and posted a video explaining the potential for a zombie Apocalypse if Romney is voted into office.

Whedon says Romney is a very different candidate than Obama.

According to a video posted by Whedon, Romney has:

"The vision and determination to cut through business-as-usual politics and finally put this country back on the path to the zombie apocalypse. Romney is ready to make the deep rollbacks in healthcare, education, social services, healthcare, reproductive rights that will guarantee poverty, unemployment, overpopulation, disease, rioting -- all crucial elements in creating a nightmare zombie wasteland. But it's his commitment to ungoverned corporate privilege that will nosedive this economy into true insolvency and chaos, the kind of chaos you can't buy back. Money is only so much paper to the undead. The one percent will no longer be the very rich, it will be the very fast."

Whedon goes on to say "he's not afraid to face a ravaging, grasping hoard of subhumans because that's how he sees poor people already."

He advises Americans to start hoarding canned goods "because if Mitt takes office, sooner or later the Zomnies will come for all of us."

How This Paparazzi Agency Turned Movie Product Placement On Its Head

0
0

Princess Diana filmThe upcoming Princess Diana movie "Diana," starring Naomi Watts, is doing things a bit differently during production.

While the film's plot focuses on the People's Princess's final years under siege by celebrity photographers, the film, for the first time in Hollywood history, struck an exclusive deal with Splash News & Picture Agency to give it access to the best photo angles while filming overseas.

Instead of paparazzi clamoring for a shot of a swimsuit-clad Watts in costume as Diana on Dodi Fayed's yacht, the film's producers agreed to give Splash special access to the set.

We spoke to Gary Morgan, CEO of Splash Media, about the new model for photography on film sets and how it can make or break a movie. He told us:

"Traditionally, the production company will hire an on-set photographer. And that photographer will take pictures that they want to release over time for the production, to draw attention to it. And they will then take these pictures and give it to a PR company who will then place that picture in what they think are high traffic or important magazines or newspapers. These PR companies are usually territory-based and don't deal with a mass audience on a day-to-day basis. They'll deal with the top-tier, like People magazine, or Entertainment Tonight, or someone like that."

"What's different here is that Splash, over 20 years, has grown a distribution network that's probably the biggest in the news field. We press a button and it goes to different countries. Our distribution gives us elite access to platform media: TV, print, newspaper, websites, apps, mobile. Interactions all with one push. We told them what shots will appeal to the media, and more importantly, the consumers on the web. We know by looking at search trends exactly what the consumers are looking for and the data -- and if it will make or break a movie. A picture we pick we can make into a banner, that way people can see the likeness straight away. So once you establish that, you then maintain it in the shots and we will then distribute it to other news systems. Now as the production carried on, we started giving out pictures mainly around matching iconic shots of Diana with shots they were shooting."

Morgan refused to reveal the financials of the deal, but we also spoke with Mark Owens, svp of Corbis Entertainment (Splash's parent company), who did say "We're not looking at the kind of thing you are getting with the first baby picture, which is a different model." (INSERT AN EXAMPLE OF PRICING IN HERE)

But not only does immediate access to photos from film sets help create buzz for movies, it also benefits brands who are paying to be featured in the films.

In this case, "We can help them with the brands 'Diana' really needs to associate with, such as Dior," explains Owens. "In the 'Diana' movie, she carries a bag full of Dior things, and she has Tod's shoes that she frequently wore, she has a Polo outfitter, too. The brands get the opportunity to see that product in media."

"So we have to partner and help get the brands that Diana was a fan of to make the movie as authentic as possible," Owens adds. "That was our first assignment. And as part of that assignment, the conversation came up that we talked with Splash about the different ways to maximize both the brand exposure and the excitement of that first real picture of what Diana was going to look like in the film."

Owens adds that the new photography model allows instant gratification for teh brands paying to be a part of the films, explaining:

"When you think about product integration, the brands pay the production to be in the movie, which many brands do. They don't see their work for 12-18 months. A script they read today, October 2012, is probably coming December 2013. So they've made their investment and they've gotten excited about being involved in the movie, but they don't see the results on the big screen for 15 months With this, they are able to see in social media, in formal media, all websites that carry the picture, their brand involvement in hundreds of millions of more impressions than they would ever get from just the theatrical, and then followed up by DVD, and screening, and syndication release, etc. From a brand standpoint there is value to it that I think what I would rather comfortably say is one day I think this will be worth it to the brand field and therefore will to lucrative to production from a brand standpoint."

Splash CEO Gary Morgan agrees, saying of his new model, "it's where paparazzi meets the art."

George Lucas Explains What's In Store For The Next Star Wars Movie (DIS)

0
0

Even more shocking than the news that Disney is buying LucasFilm for $4 billion, is that a new Star Wars movie is coming in 2015.

Disney and Lucasfilm said the film will be called Episode VII, meaning it'll be a sequel to 1983's Return of the Jedi.

StarWars.com just posted a video interview with George Lucas and Lucasfilm's new boss Kathleen Kennedy about what's in store for the next Star Wars movies.

In the interview, Lucas says he already has treatments for the next three Star Wars movies, and has handed them over to Kennedy and her team to begin writing. Kennedy says she is already sitting down with writers to hammer out the plot.

In short, Lucas is retiring and won't have much say in what happens in the next three movies. Kennedy is now in charge. (That's a good thing for Star Wars fans as Lucas is largely blamed for the nearly unwatchable prequel trilogy.)

The 20 Highest Grossing Scary Movies Of All Time

0

blair witch

Ghosts, haunted homes, murders, blood, and screaming all tend to be common themes in scary movies. But which films have used these elements the most successfully?

In honor of Halloween, we thought it would be appropriate to round up the highest-grossing horror films of all time.

The major scary movie franchises, such as "Scream," "Saw," and "Paranormal Activity," are all on the list, but which movies in the series were the most popular?

*The following 20 movies are ranked in ascending order according to U.S. gross totals.*

20. Saw II (2005): $87 million

"Saw II" is the most successful film from the "Saw" franchise, which includes seven movies. It starred Donnie Wahlberg and Beverly Mitchell, with Tobin Bell playing the villain, Jigsaw.

19. Scream 3 (2000): $89.1 million

"Scream 3" is part of the four film "Scream" franchise. The movie stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox. Arquette and Cox were married less than a year before the movie's release.

18. The Haunting (1999): $91.4 million

This late '90s film is a remake of the 1963 film. It starred Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Owen Wilson.

Meet The Woman In Charge Of Making Sure The Next Star Wars Movie Doesn't Stink (DIS)

0
0

kathleen kennedy lucasfilm president

Now that Disney is buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion in cash and stock, its founder and CEO George Lucas is heading for semi-retirement.

That means the next Star Wars movie, Episode VII, will be the responsibility of Kathleen Kennedy, who will take over as president of Lucasfilm. Kennedy will report directly to Disney and George Lucas will only serve as a creative advisor for the new movies.

In a video interview on StarWars.com, Kennedy said she has already started sitting down with writers to go over plots with writers for the next three films. Lucas has surrendered the treatments for Episodes VII through IX to Kennedy. But it seems like Kennedy and her creative team will get to make the final decisions.

And that's a good thing. Diehard Star Wars fans largely blamed George Lucas for the uninspiring prequel films that were released in the late 90s and early 2000s. With Lucas out of the picture, Kennedy can now hire fresh talent to make sure the new trilogy lives up to the standards set three decades ago.

Kennedy has the chops to do it too. She co-founded Amblin Entertainment along with Steven Spielberg in 1981 and went on to produce blockbusters like E.T.Jurassic Park, and Schindler's List.

'Star Wars' Actor Mark Hamill Freaked Out When He Heard About The New Trilogy – In August

luke skywalker

Though most were surprised to hear about Lucasfilm's $4 billion sale to Disney, Star Wars actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were not shocked to hear about the new films.

According to Entertainment Weekly, George Lucas clued them in last year to the three sequels.

Last August Lucas met up with Hamill and Fisher, who played Luke and Leia Skywalker in the original series, to tell them about his plans to expand the franchise, and Hamill was floored.

"… When he said, “We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,” I was just gobsmacked," said Hamill. “'What? Are you nuts?!'”

However, Hamill since warmed to the idea more.

"I can see both sides of it. Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be — and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. It’s one of those things: people either just don’t care for it or are passionate about it."

DreamWorks Plans To Use Classic Media As A Fourth Quarter Bump

0

rocky and bullwinkle

When DreamWorks acquired Classic Media at the end of July gaining access to classic characters Rocky & Bullwinkle, Casper, Lassie, and more, we figured we'd see the eventual recreation of the beloved characters.

However, that doesn't seem to be the case yet.

A closer look through DreamWorks' third quarter SEC filings shows the company's plans for its $157.6 million acquisition of the animation property.

Classic Media from here on out will be known as "DreamWorks Classics," and will focus heavily on fourth quarter holiday television specials.

"We expect that revenues generated by our newly acquired subsidiary, Classic Media, will tend to be higher during the fourth quarter of each calendar year due to the holiday-themed content offered through television distribution rights as well as home entertainment products geared towards the holiday season."

Through the deal, DreamWorks Animation has rights to more than 6,100 of Classic Media's animated and live-action TV shows including CasperFrosty and Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

However, DreamWorks will also have access to lucrative franchises Lassie, VeggieTales, VeggieTales, George of the Jungle, The Lone Ranger, among others.

Most curious was no mention of one of Classic Media's most popular franchises, "Rocky & Bullwinkle," in its third quarter report which makes us wonder if DreamWorks has something bigger in store for the duo.

A film based on two of Classic Media's characters "Mr Peabody & Sherman," following the adventure of a boy, his genius dog, and their stolen time machine, is already in the works for November 2013.

The animated picture will feature the voice talents of television stars Ty Burrell and Ariel Winter ("Modern Family"), Ellie Kemper ("The Office"), and Stephen Colbert.
