liam neeson bane batman begins

If you somehow haven't managed to see either "The Dark Knight Rises" or any of the films in Christopher Nolan's Bat trilogy, you're in luck.

The people over at Screenrant have compiled a pretty impressive three-minute compilation of the entire "Dark Knight" series ("Batman Begins,""The Dark Knight," and "The Dark Knight Rises").

So, if you don't want to invest more than six hours watching Christian Bale fighting the Joker, Harvey Dent, Scarecrow, and Bane – but why wouldn't you – then this is up your alley.

For diehard fans, it's a great look tribute to the trilogy now that Batbale's reign in Gotham is over.

WARNING: Don't watch unless you want the film(s) spoiled for you.

Everything You Need To Know About The French Film That Could Steal Best Picture At The Oscars

0
0

Amour

There's always one Oscar nomination every year for Best Picture that makes people go, "What?"

Last year, it was the silent black-and-white French film "The Artist" which ended up taking home Best Picture

This year, one of those films is "Amour"– the other may be "Beasts of the Southern Wild"– and, it's also French.

Here's what you should know about the film that may sneak in to win the most coveted award at the Academy Awards.

Mini-plot spoilers follow.

The basics:

  • As we said, it's French. The title translates to "Love."
  • It's the brainchild of Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke who is who is best known for 2009's "The White Ribbon" and 2005's "Caché."
  • The film follows Georges who grapples with the decision of how to continue to care for his 80-year-old wife Anne as her health continues to depreciate after a surgery leaves her paralyzed.
  • The couple's daughter Eva pressures Georges to admit Anne into a nursing home, something he promised his wife he would never do.

What it reminds us of:

Take the sad storyline behind "The Notebook" and expand that into the film's entirety.

The stars:

Jean-Louis Trintignant plays Georges. Earlier this year, he won the European Film Award for Best Actor for the film.

Do you know anything else he was in?
Trintignant is primarily a French actor so probably not unless you've seen his two award-winning films from the '60s, "The Man Who Lies" and "Z."

Emmanuelle Riva plays Anne who was also nominated for Best Actress. At 85, she's the oldest person to ever be nominated in the category

The last time Riva was nominated for any sort of award was in the '60s for Best Actress in "Therese" and another film "Hiroshima, mon amour."

Why you should care:

It won best film at both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards and the European Film Awards.

Overall, the film has been nominated for 37 awards, including its five Oscar nods (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Screenplay). Of those awards, it has won 15 to date.

Riva has won three awards for Best Actress in her role while Trintignant has clinched one win as Georges.

10 Reasons To Watch The Golden Globe Awards

Tina Fey Amy Poehler

The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards are airing tonight and there are plenty of reasons to tune in.

Co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are nominated against each other in the same category and Ben Affleck may prove the Academy wrong by wracking up the "Argo" wins.

Plus, Sofia Vergara will be in attendance rooting for "Modern Family" and who knows when she'll have yet another red carpet wardrobe malfunction.

The Golden Globes air tonight at 8ET/5PT on NBC.

10. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting.

The former "Saturday Night Live" cast mates and longtime friends will take the stage both as co-hosts and competitors in the category of Best Actress, Television Comedy Or Musical. Fey is nominated for "30 Rock" and Poehler for "Parks and Recreation" — both NBC shows, the same network on which the Golden Globes will air Sunday night. Fey has previously won two Golden Globes, while Poehler was a nominee last year. Both actress' lost in 2011 to "Enlightened" star, Laura Dern.

9. The funny ladies will be out in full force.

In addition to Fey and Poehler as hosts, Lena Dunham and Zooey Deschanel, two of the other funniest women on TV, are both up for best performance by an actress in a comedy.

And Jennifer Lawrence is nominated in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category for her role in "Silver Lining Playbook." But can she beat out veterans Meryl Streep, Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench and the popular Emily Blunt?

8. Disney vs. Pixar.

Three of the five nominated films for Best Animated Feature are from the Mouse House.

But will the very popular "Wreck-It Ralph" actually beat Pixar's latest film "Brave"?

'Zero Dark Thirty' Squashes 'Gangster Squad' – Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

0
0

zero dark thirty jessica chastain

Kathryn Bigelow's controversial Osama bin Laden film "Zero Dark Thirty" had no problem beating out the other newcomers this weekend, which was a bit of a surprise.

Ryan Gosling's period piece "Gangster Squad" grossly underperformed at theaters. However, that wasn't a surprise.

The film had the circumstantial odds stacked against it. Originally set to premiere last year, "Squad" was pushed back after the shooting in Aurora during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Then, weeks ahead of it's January release, the Newtown shooting occurred.

The film, also starring Emma Stone and Sean Penn, couldn't even do battle with a new horror film out this week, and, we're not talking about "Chainsaw Massacre." The film took a hard tumble in week two.

Out of the top ten this week include Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher," Judd Apatow's "This Is 40," and "The Guilt Trip."

Here are this week's winners and losers at the box office:

10. Oscars nods got viewers to head out to theaters to see "Silver Linings Playbook" to bring it back into the top ten. The Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper flick earned $5 million.

9. The largest drop at theaters this week was "Texas Chainsaw 3D" dipping from the top spot last week with $5.1 million. It's looking unlikely the film will earn more than $40 million after its impressive $23 million opening.

8. "Parental Guidance" drops three spots earning $6.1 million. In three weeks, the film has earned $83.2 million. It cost an estimated $25 million to make.

7. Oscar nod leader "Lincoln" moves up one notch this week earning $6.3 million.

6. With two new releases this weekend, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" drops three spots with $9 million. The "Lord of the Rings" prequel has now earned more than $866 million worldwide.

5. "Les Misérables" earns $10.1 million in week three. The film's $13.4 million debut in the U.K. made it Universal's highest-grossing opening there to date.

4. "Django Unchained" continues to beat out "Les Mis" with $11 million. Quentin Tarantino's latest Oscar-nominated film has earned $125.4 million in three weeks.

3. "Gangster Squad" fails to make a big splash with $16.7 million, having to settle for third place.

2. Instead, newcomer "A Haunted House" comes in second with $18.8 million. The low-budget film cost an estimated $2.5 million to produce.

1. And, "Zero Dark Thirty" leads the pack this week taking in $24 million. Its debut comes in higher than that of both Oscar-nominated films "Lincoln" ($21 million) and "Argo" ($19.5 million).

3 Signs That 3D Movies Are The Way Of The Future

0
0

Avatar movie

Some people say that 3D is simply a fad that will run its course. That it's an easy cash grab or gimmick by studios.

And we understand the argument — 3D tickets are expensive!

While the average price of a regular movie ticket hit $8.12 last year, you have to shell out somewhere between $10 to $18.50 (Union Square, New York City) for a 3D ticket.

If you're spending that much money to see a film, you're looking for a reason to justify paying that price. And if you're seeing a 2D film converted into 3D, sometimes you may feel like you're not getting your money's worth.

Like it or not, however, 3D's here to stay — at least until the next big thing (Peter Jackson's high-frame rate projection, perhaps). When you crunch the numbers, three things are obvious.

1. There's been a large increase of 3D screen installments in theaters:

After the release of "Avatar" in 2009, the number of 3D digital screens exploded worldwide.

2005: 98
2006: 258
2007: 1,300
2008: 3,800
2009: 9,000
2010: 16,000
2011: 36,000
2012: 43,000

Of course, the return of 3D to theaters came well before Avatar in 2009.

There were approximately four films in 2005 released in the U.S. in 3D: "Aliens of the Deep,""The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,""Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D," and "Chicken Little." None of them except Disney's "Chicken Little" earned more than $70 million worldwide.

Soon after "Avatar" became the highest-grossing film to date, it seemed like everyone jumped on the 3D bandwagon.

In 2010, the number of 3D screens installed more than doubled from 16,339 to 36,242. As a result, at least 30 films were presented in the format in the U.S., making up nearly 20 percent of the global box office that year

In 2009, Screen Digest predicted there would be 15,000 3D cinema screens by 2013

2. There are more 3D films being released every year:

This year, Box Office estimates 39 films will be available to see in the U.S. in 3D. Here's a rundown of how 3D films have blown up on screens since 2005. Note the blowup occurs in 2009 when a big push of 3D cinema screens emerged.

2005: 4
2006: 7
2007: 7
2008: 8
2009: 20
2010: 30
2011: 38
2012: 38

3. Most importantly, 3D films are actually earning money:

chris hemsworth thor the avengersFor the most part, the latest round of films to come out in 3D are earning money.

Of the current ten highest-grossing 3D films, three were from 2012 alone ("The Avengers,""The Hobbit," and "The Amazing Spider-Man").

After looking at the highest-grossing films of 2012, nine of the top 15 were in 3D, helping to make this year at the box office the biggest yet with a projected $10.8 million earnings worldwide

Jeff Gomez, CEO of Starlight Runner Entertainment, shared another important fact about 3D with us — the lucrative international revenue.

"It's important to remember that 3D does dynamite overseas, accounting for a significant percentage of foreign box office for the studios," says Gomez. "So I don't think the studios will be put off the process any time soon."

In 2010, the 3D international box office tripled, earning $3.9 billion

This year, of the nine high-grossing 3D films, eight of them fared much better overseas:

 Film Domestic Foreign
"The Avengers" $623.4 million $888.4 million
"Ice Age: Continental Drift" $161.2 million $714 million
"The Hobbit" $266.7 million $562.8 million
 "Madagascar 3" $216.4 million $525.7 million
 "The Amazing Spider-Man" $262 million $490.2 million
"Men in Black 3" $179 million $445 million
 "Brave" $237.3 million $298.1 million
 "Prometheus" $126.5 million $276 million
"The Lorax" $214 million $134.8 million

As The Wrap pointed out, these numbers can be deceiving, as this gives the total box-office gross and not the percentage of the revenue which comes solely from 3D.

According to The Wrap, 3D earnings have been on a slow decline since 2010. However, with most 3D figures accounting for at least 50 percent of a film's earnings during opening weekends, that's a pretty substantial figure.

Fifty-two percent of "The Avengers" ticket sales during its massive $200+ opening weekend came from 3D. The film went on to become the highest-grossing film of last year with $1.5 billion at the box office worldwide.

And the first 3D film of the year, "Texas Chainsaw," surprised both critics and those who worked on the film when it earned an unexpected $21.7 million in its opening weekend.

No, this doesn't mean that all 3D films are faring well at theaters.

Monsters-IncDisney re-releases have seen a significant decline. After "The Lion King" had a massive box office performance (the film earned $177.6 million worldwide), Disney announced it would release four more films in 3D. None of them have lived up to the Oscar-winning film. Instead, they've all seen a rapid decline in opening weekend grosses and overall box office.

(Note: To offset the anomaly of "The Lion King" earning a $100 million more than other Disney films, we've used domestic instead of worldwide totals.)

Disney 3D rereleases gross

The same can be said for 3D concert films.

With the exception of "Michael Jackson's This Is It" after the singer's death, 3D hasn't been a draw for concert films. The latest singer to try and bring a film to the big screen, Katy Perry, saw her film bomb opening weekend. In its defense, the movie fell victim to debuting the same weekend as the "Spider-Man" reboot.

  Film  Opening Weekend  Worldwide Gross
 "Hannah Montana" (2008) $31.1 million $70.6 million
 "Jonas Brothers"
 "The 3D Concert Experience" (2009) $12.5 million $23.2 million
"Michael Jackson's This Is It" (2009) $23.2 million $261.2 million
"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" (2011) $29.5 million $98.4 million
"Katy Perry: Part of Me" (2012) $7.1 million $25.3 million

According to Gomez, studios are picking up on this.

"Filmmakers and studios are starting to be more conscientious about poorly processed 3D conversions and the use of 3D for frivolous purposes or non-event films," says Gomez. "Negative word of mouth, particularly in social media in the States, has clearly amounted to underperforming movies and a degree of embarrassment for the stakeholders. As a fan I'm hoping this means that more thought, budget and creativity will be put into conversions, and better yet, more native 3D films will be made."

'Star Wars' Delivered A Brilliant Response To The White House's Death Star Rejection

0

palpatine star wars

The White House doesn't get the last say about the Death Star.

Friday, the Obama administration poked fun at "Star Wars" when it turned down a "We the People" petition to construct a Death Star.

The colorful response reasoned the Administration didn't support blowing up planets and called out a structural weakness that led to Luke Skywalker destroying it single handedly.

The White House also estimated it would cost nearly $850 quadrillion of taxpayers dollars to build.

In response, the Galactic Empire issued a mock statement to the White House via StarWars.com. In it, the Empire called out "Earth's exaggerated claims of there being a weakness in the Death Star design" and the exorbitant estimated construction price tag.

Read the hilarious letter below:

IMPERIAL CENTER, CORUSCANT -- The overwhelming military superiority of the Galactic Empire has been confirmed once again by the recent announcement by the President of the United States that his nation would not attempt to build a Death Star, despite the bellicose demands of the people of his tiny, aggressive planet. "It is doubtless that such a technological terror in the hands of so primitive a world would be used to upset the peace and sanctity of the citizens of the Galactic Empire," said Governor Wilhuff Tarkin of the Outer Rim Territories. “Such destructive power can only be wielded to protect and defend by so enlightened a leader as Emperor Palpatine.”

Representatives on behalf of the nation-state leader from the unimaginatively named planet refused to acknowledge the obvious cowardice of their choice, preferring instead to attribute the decision to fiscal responsibility. “The costs of construction they cited were ridiculously overestimated, though I suppose we must keep in mind that this miniscule planet does not have our massive means of production,” added Admiral Conan Motti of the Imperial Starfleet.

Emissaries of the Emperor also caution any seditious elements within the Galactic Senate not to believe Earth’s exaggerated claims of there being a weakness in the Death Star design. “Any attacks made upon such a station — should one ever be built — would be a useless gesture,” added Motti.

After a yearlong, multi-million-dollar renovation, the red velvet ropes will once again hold back the lines outside famed New York City nightclub Marquee.

The West Chelsea hotspot is scheduled to open to the public Friday with a performance by techno DJ Dubfire.

The revamped space will be better-equipped for A-list DJs and musical acts, with fewer tables and a bigger dance floor. And designer Josh Held gave it an industrial-style makeover, covering the walls in recycled leather belts and using welded rebar for the handrails.

Marquee officially opens this weekend, but guests at the wrap party for Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" got a sneak peek when they partied there Saturday.

Check out some pictures of the party and the new space below:

iron man 3 bunnyWile E. Coyote has ACME and billionaire Tony Stark will have TCL.

Don't recognize the name? You may soon. Or, at least that's what the Chinese electronics company hopes.

The Creative Life (TCL) which recently bought the rights to Grauman's Chinese Theater for $5 million– (yes, it will be renamed the TCL Theater) – has announced a product placement deal to appear in the upcoming "Iron Man 3."

Everything from Tony Stark's motion panel device to his smart TV and mobile handsets will be from the Chinese company.

Chaimain and co-founder Tomson Li told Bloomberg News at CES in Las Vegas last week their plan is to compete with big dogs, Apple and Samsung.

“I believe our new generation of products are as good as those from Samsung and Apple,” said Li. “This Iron Man cooperation is very useful for us to promote the TCL brand in the global market, including the U.S. and China.”

This isn't the first brand placement for the company though. According to TCL, they've also done previous promotions with "Transformers: Dark of the Moon,""The Avengers,""The Dark Knight Rises," and "Cloud Atlas."

"Iron Man 3" hits theaters May 3.

DreamWorks Animation Named Best Studio To Work For In Hollywood

0
0

ShrekFor the fifth consecutive year, DreamWorks Animation has made Fortune Magazine's list of the 100 best employers, and once again it is the only Hollywood studio to make the cut.

DreamWorks placed 12th, moving up from last year's 14th place ranking. The studio has made Fortune's list since 2009, debuting at 47th and has ranked at high as 6th place in 2010.

What makes it such a great place to work?

DreamWorks is known for its friendly, open atmosphere, it's great perks, like free breakfasts and lunch for all its employees, and for its free classes, which include yoga, figure drawing, and storytelling,

It's campus is also filled with water fountains, ping pong tables and fish ponds for employees to enjoy throughout the day.

The studio was founded in 1994 by Steven Spielberg, legendary music production David Geffen and former Disney executive, Jeffrey Katzenberg. The studio is best known for its hits "Shrek", "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Kung Fu Panda."

Google once again ranked number one. The entire list will be revealed Thursday.

13 Sundance Film Festival Movies You Have To See

0
0

Sundance-Film-Festival

Thanks to Richard Gere and the financial crisis, the Sundance Film Festival is returning to its indie roots this year.

The festival, which starts Thursday, has long served as a launching pad for smaller movies, as it did last year in catapulting “Beasts of the Southern Wild” to four Oscar nominations. However, as the festival has grown in stature, it also has craved big-ticket movies with brand-name stars, from John Wells' "The Company Men" (Ben Affleck and a reported $15 million budget) to Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" (Richard Gere and a $17 million budget).

“At previous Sundances, there was a real effort to try and have very high-profile mainstream films,” Jessica Lacy, head of ICM's international and independent film department, told TheWrap.

But this new crop, she said, "all feel like unique, independent films. The distribution landscape lends itself to making and having more kinds of these films, and there are more opportunities for them to be distributed.”

Indeed, two recent Sundance premieres -- “Margin Call,” a drama about the early stages of the financial crisis, and  “Arbitrage,” Nicholas Jarecki’s film about an unscrupulous hedge-fund manager -- validated the increasingly popular strategy of simultaneously releasing films in theaters and on video by demand or other platforms.

Now, more buyers are trying new approaches, actors, directors -- and even stars are more willing to make the small movies.

"Spectacular Now" brings back actress Shailene Woodley.

Do two Sundance darlings add up to a third? James Ponsoldt, whose “Smashed” charmed the festival in 2012, directed this adolescent romantic comedy written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, whose “(500) Days of Summer” debuted in 2009.

The film hits many of the same notes -- youth, romance, adventure, alcoholism and two people with very different perspectives on how to live. It also stars a pair of up-and-coming actors, Miles Teller of “Project X" and Shailene Woodley of “The Descendants.”

"Anita" is a must-see documentary.

It’s been more than 20 years since Anita Hill came into the public spotlight during the nomination hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, where she accused him of sexual harassment. But there has never been a better time for this documentary -- just months after an election year that featured a “war on women” and two candidates who came out with outrageous statements about rape.

Hill helped pave the way for new conversations about sexual harassment. Freida Lee Mock, who won an Academy Award in 1995 for her documentary "Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision," combines archival footage and present-day interviews to examine the politics of sexism, then and now.

"Prince Avalanche" features a bromance between Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.

David Gordon Green made some good movies in the last decade, including “George Washington,” a coming-of-age tale set in North Carolina, and “Pineapple Express,” a stoner comedy-action movie.

“Pineapple Express" marked the beginning of the end for Green, as his indie sensibility fell into the studio system with couple of forgettable comedies -- “Your Highness” and “The Sitter.”

Now he’s back in his comfort zone, writing and directing an adaptation of an Icelandic movie featuring the male bonding of Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.

Think Judd Apatow meets rural America.

How Sally Field Gained 25 Pounds To Transform Into The First Lady For 'Lincoln'

Mary Todd Lincoln sally field

It doesn't look like Sally Field went through much of a transformation to become the first lady in "Lincoln"; however, the 66-year-old actress gained 25 pounds for the role.

Though Field says she was already the same height as Mary Todd, during a new 20-minute mini-documentary for the film, the actress mentions that she gained the weight to fit Mrs. Lincoln's measurements.

On "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Field shared it wasn't a fun feat.

"I tried to do it healthy, which I understand there isn't any way to do it healthy," she said. "I ate brown rice and these protein drinks made out of stuff called pro-Gain . . . Oh God, it was just disgusting. I never had a fun meal, basically. It just was discipline."

Field told Leno it took her nearly six months to gain the 25 pounds, and another year to lose it.

"I began to work out like a mad fiend. I had two trainers. I really worked out hard 4 times a week," said Field. "I eventually had to have knee surgery. My little frame couldn't hold this amount of weight."

Nearly all of the costumes Field wore in the film are near exact replicas of clothes found in paintings or photographs of the first lady.

django unchained dolls

The days to get a "Django Unchained" character doll are officially numbered.

TMZ reports distributor National Entertainment Collectibles Association shut down production on the controversial figures after groups including Al Sharpton's National Action Network and Project Islamic Hope boycotted the dolls.

Both said the dolls were "highly offensive" to the African American community and trivialized "the horrors of slavery."

According to TMZ, "Django Unchained" producers The Weinstein Company asked for the toys to be shelved.

Six dolls in all were put out on the market ranging from Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio's likenesses of respective lead characters Django and Calvin Candie.

Only about 1,000 of the dolls have been released and were intended for ages 15 and up. Each doll was priced near $30.

Since word of controversy began, some of the dolls have already spiked up to more than $200 on Amazon

Though this probably won't become the next cabbage patch crisis, in case you want to get your hands on one of the dolls, we've found all six of available for purchase and bidding on Amazon and eBay:

Butch Pooch (James Remar): $29.99
Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio): $30.00
Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz): $39.99
Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson): $39.99
Django (Jamie Foxx): $79.99
Broomhilda (Kerry Washington): $255.00

'Mama' Terminates Arnold's 'Last Stand' — Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

0
0

jessica chastain mamaYou may need to do a double take to realize Jessica Chastain was in not one, but two of the weekend's highest-grossing films.

Nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in Osama Bin Laden flick, "Zero Dark Thirty," Chastain also appeared nearly unrecognizable in Guillermo del Toro's latest horror film "Mama" with a short black bob.

Both films stole the box office weekend away from Arnold Schwarzenegger's newest film "The Last Stand" and Mark Wahlberg's "Broken City."

"The Last Stand" ended up becoming Schwarzenegger's lowest opening at theaters since "Junior" released in 1994.

Out of the top ten this week are "Lincoln" after ten weeks at the top of the list, "Parental Guidance," and "Texas Chainsaw 3D" which has all but disappeared from the box-office line up after three weeks.

Here are this weekends winners and losers at the box office:

10. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" earns another $6.2 million in week six. The first of the new trilogy has managed to take in more than $900 million worldwide.

9. Schwarzenegger does better with numbers in "The Expendables." The $6.3 million intake for "The Last Stand," also featuring Johnny Knoxville and Forest Whitaker, was low considering the estimated $30 million it cost to produce. This may be a sign of how Sylvester Stallone's "Bullet to the Head" shall do when it debuts February 1.

8. "Les Misérables" almost drops out of the top ten this week with $7.5 million. The film is doing nearly as well overseas as it is at home ($130.4 million vs. $115.1 million).

7. The first of two Weinstein Company films in the top ten, "Django Unchained" earned $7.8 million. The film earned nearly $50 million in its foreign release this weekend bringing its worldwide gross to $187.8 million.

6. The only other "scary" movie to stay in the top ten is Marlon Wayans' "A Haunted House" with $8.1 million. It cost a lowly estimated $2.5 million to make the successful farce which has earned just about $30 million at theaters so far.

5. "Broken City" fell apart at theaters for Mark Wahlberg earning $8.6 million. It's not too surprising though as there has been more press and promos for his April film "Pain & Gain" with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson lately. Wahlberg hasn't seen an opening this low since 2007's "We Own The Night" which earned $10.8 million. The film cost an estimated $35 million to produce.

4. "Gangster Squad" takes a hit in week two dropping nearly 50 percent with $8.7 million. The film has now earned $52.4 million worldwide of its estimated $60 million budget.

3. Now in more than 2,500 theaters, "Silver Linings Playbook" has managed to take in its biggest weekend yet with $10.8 million. The Weinstein Company film has now earned $55.3 million since its initial November 2012 release.

2. "Zero Dark Thirty" continues to perform well with $15.8 million in its second wide-release weekend. The controversial film has now earned $59 million worldwide after costing an estimated $40 million to make.

1. Jessica Chastain has two box-office winners this weekend. Horror film "Mama" earned $28.5 million for Universal over the holiday weekend ($33.4 for the four-day weekend). For comparison, that's nearly as much as producer Guillermo del Toro's last scare "Pan's Labyrinth" earned domestically ($37.6 million).

Abraham Lincoln's Real Watch Was Used In The Oscar-Nominated Film

Lincoln

If you listen closely while watching "Lincoln," you'll hear the ticking of the late president's actual watch.

Really.

Director Steven Spielberg could have used any old watch to replicate the noises of Lincoln's ticker; however, the sound team tracked down the watch Lincoln had in his pocket when he went to Ford's theater to use in the film.

During a recently released 20-minute mini-documentary on the film, sound designer Ben Burtt said since there were no recordings of the period – audio recording wasn't invented until after the president's passing – he wanted to try include sounds of items and surroundings Lincoln heard daily.

He sent a recording partner to Kentucky to record the watch for the film.

"They let Greg record it from the front, from the back, and they opened the watch up and he put a little tiny mic inside the watch so, we got it from every perspective," said Burtt. "When I got those recordings back it was really a thrill to know that this ticking was the sound that was around every time Lincoln was probably alone in his office."

While we may not know the plot, who's directing, or what the newest installment of "Star Wars" is about,  there is one reason to get excited for the new film.

Disney has contacted Drew Struzan to return to work on artwork for the new films.

If the name Struzan doesn't ring a bell, you're definitely familiar with his art. (After all, he painted posters for the first six "Star Wars" films.)

Struzan told website Fanhattan it's not a definite he'll return, but there's always the possibility.

"I spent 35 years painting 'Star Wars'. I painted 'Star Wars' before most of you were born! But I guess there is always a chance," said Struzan. "If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family."

Check out more of Struzan's work on his website.
