Here's What Age Actors And Actresses Can Command The Highest Salaries

Julia Roberts Emma Roberts Shirley MacLaine

Actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, 52, once said, "It’s the nature of the business. People equate success with youth."

And she's apparently right  but only when it comes to women in Hollywood.

A new study by the Journal of Management Inquiry has found that actresses in their 20s earn more than their male counterparts, while older actors make more than their female colleagues.

The study, which reviewed earnings records for 265 actors and actresses between 1968 and 2008, revealed that actresses hit their salary peak at age 34, while actors make the most money on average per film at age 51.

And while women’s salaries see a dramatic plunge over time, the drop off after an earnings peak is much less for men, notes Variety.

Kate Hudson, Mindy Kaling, and Zooey Deschanel are a few of the top-earning 34-year-olds of the moment, while Tom Cruise and Steve Carell are among Hollywood's most notable 51-year-old actors.

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker, 48, agrees with the study's findings, saying:

There is still a discrepancy in earning power between men and women in Hollywood. And it becomes doubly unfair when you think of our earning potential in terms of years.  Actresses are like football players. They have a small window of prime earning ability

As Variety points out, it's good to be an older male in Hollywood:

According to Forbes’ annual earnings list, Hollywood’s 10 highest-paid actresses (with Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart at the top) earned $181 million collectively from June 2012 to June 2013 — the lowest total in five years, down almost 30% since 2010′s record high.

Meanwhile, the highest-paid actors (Robert Downey Jr., Channing Tatum and Hugh Jackman) banked a collective $465 million — the most in five years, up more than 15% since 2009.

Academy Sues Man For Manufacturing, Selling Fake Oscar Statues Online

It may be Award season for all of Hollywood, but there is one man in America that won’t be up for an Oscar this year.

RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned that the Academy Awards filed a lawsuit on Feb. 6 against Texas man Jaime De La Rosa for manufacturing, importing, and selling fake Oscar statuettes on eBay and Etsy.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences “seeks injunctive relief and damages for copyright infringement, trademark infringement, trademark dilution, and false representation,” court papers obtained by Radar stated.

“De La Rosa operates (1) a store on the eBay Web site (ww.ebay.com) in the form of an online auction and shopping site under the username ‘jjleo0205 and (2) an online store on the Etsy Web site (www.etsy.com) under store name ‘QuietOnTheSet’ and user name ‘Jaime De La Rosa,’” the suit said.

The academy also sued 10 other individuals, but listed them in the paperwork against De La Rosa as “Does 1 through 10.”

According to the court papers, Does 1 through 5 “manufactured, imported, or procured counterfeit replica ‘Oscar’ statuettes for De La Rosa to sell in derogation of the Academy’s rights.”

Does 6 through 10 helped De La Rosa with the sale of the counterfeit statuettes.

The issue was first brought to the attention of the Academy in November 2013 when they found out about a listing on eBay called “Academy Award Hollywood Metal Movie Acting Trophy Prop Replica” with one of the fake statutes being sold for $850.

The Academy claimed that the contacted De La Rosa, but he continued to sell the replicas — one replica was even being sold for the price of $5,000 on his Etsy store.

The Academy sued De La Rosa for copyright infringement and is asking for an injunction against him to get him to stop selling the fake statues.

They are also demanding $150,000 in damages from the defendant.

“The Academy is entitled to recover three times the defendants’ profits and the Academy’s damages, reasonable attorneys’ fees, and the cost of this action,” the papers said.

'Winter's Tale' Reviews: Colin Farrell Stars In A Muddled Romantic Mess

winter's tale

Winter’s Tale” is one of the Valentine's day features vying for your attention this weekend.

Starring Colin Farrell and Jessica Brown Findlay — “Downton Abbey” fans will recognize her as the former Lady Sybil — as star-crossed lovers the film is first set in the early 1900s before fast-forwarding to present day.

Farrell plays Peter Lake, a thief who captures the heart of Beverly Penn (Findlay) while on the run from his former mentor Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe). Lake then pops up in 2014, unaged and without an inkling of who he is, where he gets acquainted with another woman Virginia Gamely (Jennifer Connelly) while trying to sort out his identity.

By far, there's a lot going on in the nearly two-hour movie.

The first reviews for "Winter's Tale" are out today — never a good sign for a movie — and it's currently sitting at 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie is based on a hefty novel from Mark Helprin of the same name and comes from first time director Akiva Goldsman (he's written wonderful films like "A Beautiful Mind" and "Cinderella Man" and then "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin").

Warner Bros. spent a reported $75 million on the movie. Early estimates have the movie making $13 million over the weekend.

While figuring out which movie to see this holiday, here’s what what critics are saying about "Winter's Tale":

One of the problems with the film is the time-traveling aspect which detracts from the initial love story.

Paste

“There is an underlying plot of good versus evil; angels, demons and spirit guides drift in and out of the storyline clumsily. Then, there is the modern-day aspect, as well, which is perhaps the film’s least interesting aspect all together.”

The Hollywood Reporter (THR)

“No doubt intended as an emotionalized and commercialized embodiment of Nietzsche's Eternal Return, the time-jumping set-up is so lacking in plausible narrative underpinnings that Goldsman would have needed to somehow seduce the audience into accepting the wild leaps the story takes. Without the needed persuasion, the strong temptation is just to reject the entire premise early on, which makes for a lot of eye-rolling, exasperated sighing and wristwatch glancing during the remaining long haul.”

The Wrap

"The sparks between Farrell and Brown Findlay are undeniable, but “Winter’s Tale” gives us too little of their love story, opting instead to lose itself in magical mumbo-jumbo while at the same time trying to keep one foot in the real, recognizable world.”

That seems to be a shame since it sounds like a romantic movie that just got caught up in itself.

winter's tale colin farrellVillage Voice

“But provided you know what you're in for, the first chunk of Winter's Tale — the romantic part, before Peter is consigned to being a boring old Jesus figure — offers some modest escapist pleasures, not least thanks to Farrell's sweet, earnest intensity and the presence of a rather spectacular flying white horse.”

Paste:

“The best part of this film is the tender performance of lovers Farrell and Findlay. There are a few moments, particularly near the opening, when it feels almost as though the actors went off script and created their own magical world.”

Then there’s a random Will Smith cameo where he plays a Satan-like character.

THR: Smith suddenly sprouts dagger-sharp teeth at the climax of his worst-ever big-screen appearance.

Variety refers to him as the “Fresh Prince of Hell Air.”

Fans of the book probably won’t be happy:

winters tale colin farrellVariety

“Goldsman appears to have plucked key moments and images from the book and twisted them into a familiar iconography of spiritual/sentimental kitsch — hey look, a little girl with cancer — with no regard for the delicacy with which Helprin eased the reader into his fanciful universe.”

Screencrush is especially brutal:

“’Winter's Tale' makes 'Safe Haven' look like 'The Godfather.’ It is an absurd story adapted in the most dreary way possible, with lifeless performances, dull dialogue and laughable special effects. I need to cross-reference my files, but I think it is the worst major studio release with respected actors in five years. If any of us cared about our culture at all we’d be gathering our pitchforks and storming Hollywood now.”

Despite all that, the film is visually appealing.

Village Voice

Some of Winter's Tale is just flat-out pretty enough to work. Beverly and her family own a glorious fairy-tale mansion perched at the edge of a frozen lake — the scene is winter wonderland central, a confection of dazzling, sparkly whiteness. … Winter's Tale, however imperfect,is that rare beast on the movie landscape: an unapologetic romance (for the first two-thirds, anyway), with attractive stars and special effects designed to give audiences something other than the experience of watching worlds get blown up.”

THR:

“One is struck by the exceptional opulence of the New York settings (particularly the vintage ones) overseen and/or created by production designer Naomi Shohan and visual effects supervisor Richard Hollander, the great care devoted to the changing backdrops and skylines dictated by the eras, and the beauty with which it has all been photographed by Caleb Deschanel.”

From the one completely positive review for the film so far:

“I found this well-crafted piece of magical realism quite imaginative and intriguing, though I suspect fans of the book might be a bit disappointed, given how much is ordinarily lost in translation bringing any 700-page book to the big screen. A searing, supernatural exploration of the human soul suggesting not only that love is real but that miracles happen, too!”

Overall consensus: Skip.

It was never clear from any of the trailers what exactly this movie was about. “Winter’s Tale” looked like a romance that transcended time and space mixed with conflict from an outside source. Despite the star power of Russell Crowe and a potential dynamic love story between Farrell and Findlay's characters, a complex plot made this romance lose its magic.

If you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day date movie, we’re not too keen on any of the releases out this weekend, save maybe Kevin Hart’s comedy "About Last Night" which, at the least, should bring some laughs. Warner Bros.’ other release “The LEGO Movie” — which isn’t just a kiddie flick — would probably be a better alternative.

The first trailer for Melissa McCarthy's next comedy "Tammy" is here

The film reteams McCarthy with "Bridesmaids" director Ben Falcone.

Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd, and Kathy Bates also star.

Here's the plot synopsis from Warner Bros.:

Tammy (McCarthy) is having a bad day. She's totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbor in her own house.

It's time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she's broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Sarandon), is her only option—with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shot gun, it may be just what Tammy needs.

"Tammy" comes to theaters July 2.

Marvel Studios President Hints At Future Black Widow Movie

$

black widow scarlett johanssonThere are seemingly hundreds of tantalizing things to look forward to in Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, from the epic-looking action sequences to cast additions like Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford, but the thing that I am truly most excited to see is the dynamic between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

From a morality perspective, the two characters couldn't be more different while also being considered heroic: Steve Rogers sees good and evil in black and white, while for Natasha Romanoff there are endless shades of grey. More than that, it will just be fascinating to see the development of Black Widow, who has evolved quite a bit since her first appearance in Iron Man 2. But her evolution won't stop at the Captain America sequel.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed to Total Film (via Comic Book Movie) that the studio has some very big future plans for the Russian spy/S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Discussing what we can expect from Black Widow after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Feige confirmed that the character will have a "very big" role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and that he and the other minds behind the franchise have been toying with the idea of giving her her own solo film. "We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film," Feige said of Joss Whedon's upcoming movie. "The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that."

The studio president also confirmed reports that the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be progressing the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a major way that will have a huge impact on The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Marvel Studios' Phase Three plans beyond it. Said the executive,

"We wanted to change the dynamic of the cinematic universe with this film. We wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of Winter Solider than it is at the beginning. Therefore when we meet the Avengers at the top of Age of Ultron, it's a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the film film. Partially that's because we love the rhythm that the comic books have developed - each of the characters appear in their runs, occasionally they get together for a big event or crossover series, they part again, and then they come back together again."

We learned quite a bit about Black Widow's history in the last Avengers movie, and it sounds like that could be something that we see a lot more of in the sequel (same goes for Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye). This is not the first time we've heard rumblings about a potential solo film for the character, but it will be interesting to see if it works out this time. Looking into the future, I'm very curious to see how a big Black Widow plotline works in coordination with the battle against Ultron, but that's a question we won't get an answer to for many months. In the meantime, get ready for the Captain America sequel, which arrives on April 4th.

Paramount Studios

Paramount Pictures is the studio responsible for hit films such as "The Wolf Of Wall Street,""Titanic," and the "Transformers" franchise, as well as TV shows like "Glee."

While most studios shoot their projects off-site, the majority of Paramount's projects are filmed right on the historic studio lot that still functions today in the heart of Hollywood.

The studio offers tours for film and TV buffs, and we took the most intensive one available — "an in-depth, insider's experience, which includes access to Hollywood history and magic unavailable to the general public."

Four and a half hours later, here is everything we saw. As promised, it was magical.

Behold the iconic gates guarding Paramount Pictures — the oldest surviving studio still located in Hollywood.

This is what's known as "The Bronson Gate," which at one time was the main entrance to the studio. Many visitors ask if the gate was named for actor Charles Bronson, but it's actually the other way around: Bronson named himself after the gate!

Near the entrance is a screening theater where Michael Bay watched "Transformers" 31 times to tweak it before release.

the wolf of wall street

Valentine's Day is one of the best days of the year to watch a romantic movie. There are plenty of great love stories to choose from, but only a select few actually happened.

And for many of these famous movie couples, sometimes reality can be stranger than fiction.

From "The Wolf of Wall Street" to Howard Stern's "Private Parts," see who got their happily ever after in real life  and who didn't.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie played Jordan and Naomi Belfort, who first met at a pool party in "The Wolf of Wall Street" ...

In real life, Jordan Belfort did meet "Nadine" at a pool party before he made her his second wife.

"The Wolf of Wall Street" would not be confused as a love story, but it did get a lot of the facts right surrounding Belfort's second marriage to Nadine Caridi, the "Naomi" character in the film.

The real Nadine was a model who starred in beer commercials, had an English aunt who smuggled money into Switzerland for Belfort, and was introduced to Belfort at a pool party.

The couple have two children together, but got divorced in 1998 after seven years of marriage.

In "American Hustle" Christian Bale's Irving Rosenfeld has to deal with not only conning politicians, but also his wife, Rosalyn, played by Jennifer Lawrence ...

'Parks And Recreation' Actor May Star In 'Knight Rider' Movie

$

Chris Pratt

Provided that everything goes according to plan, Chris Pratt is on the verge of becoming one of the biggest stars in the world.

Just this past weekend he voiced the lead character in the number one movie in America, starring as Emmet in Phil Lord and Chris Miller's The LEGO Movie, and coming up soon he will be front and center of two major blockbusters, starring in both James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy and Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World.

It's a crucial moment in the young actor's career, so it's hard to understand why he would sign on for something as misguided as yet another relaunch of the Knight Rider franchise... but that's the rumor that is going going around.

We first learned about a possible Knight Rider movie this past summer when it was reported that The Weinstein Company had hired screenwriter Brad Copeland to pen the script, but now unnamed sources as Schmoes Know (via Bleeding Cool) are saying that both Chris Pratt and Danny McBride are in talks for the film's lead roles. While the site doesn't specify who would be playing what roles, the assumption is that Pratt would play Michael Knight - previously played by David Hasselhoff in the original series - while McBride will voice KITT, Michael's talking car.

If this rumor does turn out to be true, it would suggest that the tone of the new movie will be quite a lot different from both the 1982 series and the 2008 failed reboot. Rather than taking the serious action thriller route, this casting would suggest that The Weinstein Company is instead thinking about the film as a 21 Jump Street-esque action comedy. But we know so little about the new Knight Rider that this is basically all just conjecture and theory.

The original series, created by Glen A. Larson, began by following a police officer named Michael Long (Hasselhoff) who winds up getting shot and left for dead during an investigation. He is discovered and taken in by the mysterious millionaire Wilton Knight, who has some big plans to fight the crime in his city. After being nursed back to health, Michael Long is reborn as Michael Knight and heads into the city to fight crime with help from Wilton as well as the super car known as the Knight Industries Two Thousand, a.k.a. KITT.

Pratt has so many potential franchises on his plate right now that it's hard to 100% believe this story, but if you were to ask me if I ever wanted to see him star alongside Danny McBride in a film, my answer would be "hell yes." But is this the right move? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Kevin Hart's New Comedy May Take Out The ‘RoboCop’ Remake At Theaters This Weekend

about last night kevin hart

It’s going to be a close weekend at the box office this weekend — at least for second and third place.

While “The LEGO Movie” is expected to reel in audiences for the second week in a row, there’s a three way battle for the romantic film to see.

Here are the choices for the weekend:

1. Warner Bros.' poor-reviewed Colin Farrell love story “Winter’s Tale.”
2. Universal' remake of ‘80s film “Endless Love” that’s aimed at teens.
3. Sony’s romantic comedy with Kevin Hart, “About Last Night" (also a remake).

Then, there’s the “RoboCop” remake which has received mixed reception.

Weeks ago, we probably would have said “RoboCop” would have no problem drawing a huge audience this weekend. However, it looks like Hart could be the surprise winner for the weekend. Here’s why:

Kevin Hart has quietly been a break-out box office success since last year.

Grudge Match” aside (he wasn’t the star in that), the comedian has been killing it at theaters. Take a look at the opening box office numbers for Hart’s last three movies.

MovieStudioOpeningWorldwideBudget
"Ride Along"Universal$41.5 million$110.3 million$25 million
"Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" (stand-up)Lionsgate/Summit$10 million$32.3 millionn/a
"Think Like A ManSony Screen Gems$33.6 million$96.1 million$12 million

"Think Like A Man" outperformed beyond box-office expectations that a sequel to the film is out this June.

Regarding the stand-up film, "Let Me Explain" is the fourth highest-grossing comedy concert movie behind Richard Pryor's '82 film "Live on the Sunset Strip."

The reviews

"About Last Night" has remarkably better reviews than "Winter's Tale,""Endless Love," AND "RoboCop."
Via Rotten Tomatoes (critics/audience):

"About Last Night": 75%/83%
"RoboCop": 49%/67%
"Endless Love": 16%/68%
"Winter's Tale": 13%/49%

It's the film both women ... and men want to see

Thursday, Fandango released a survey of more than 1,000 ticket buyers asking which films men and women want to see for the holiday weekend.

Hart’s film is at the top of both lists.  The only movie that beats it out for men is “RoboCop.”

TOP VALENTINE’S WEEKEND MOVIE PICKS FOR MEN
1. ROBOCOP
2. ABOUT LAST NIGHT
3. MONUMENTS MEN
4. LONE SURVIVOR
5. RIDE ALONG

FOR WOMEN:
1. ABOUT LAST NIGHT
2. ENDLESS LOVE
3. WINTER’S TALE
4. VAMPIRE ACADEMY
5. LABOR DAY

Ticket Sale Numbers

robocop remakeWednesday morning, "About Last Night" was selling more tickets through Fandango than "RoboCop."

Here are the percentage of ticket sales for Wed. morning from Fandango:

"The LEGO Movie": 30%
"About Last Night": 22%
"RoboCop": 15%

As of Friday morning, Hart's comedy is crushing it.

"About Last Night": 28%
"The LEGO Movie": 27%
"Endless Love": 11%
"RoboCop": 11%
"Winter's Tale": 7%

Box office predictions for "RoboCop" and "About Last Night" this weekend are scattered so far.
Here are the four-day estimates from BoxOffice.com and BoxOfficeMojo:

"The Lego Movie": $43-$60 million
"RoboCop": $17.5-$28 million
"About Last Night": $26.5-$34.5 million

Thoughts: It makes sense for "About Last Night" to draw numbers closer to "Think Like A Man,” given the popularity of "Ride Along." $60 million seems a bit high for week two of "The LEGO Movie" since it opened to $69.1 million last week. $40 million is probably a more reasonable expectation.

'Veronica Mars' Tickets Are Already Selling Out For March

Veronica Mars Kristen Bell

From day one, Veronica Mars fans have put their money where their collective mouths have been, so it’s no real surprise that they continue to do so as the movie makes its way to theaters.

Obviously, the Veronica Mars movie wouldn’t be happening if not for a successful Kickstarter campaign, one that set records for the amount of money raised (at the time) in support of a feature film. Fans of the defunct television program really wanted the story to continue on the big screen, and they are getting their wish early next month.

Now Variety reports that AMC Fan Events scheduled in select markets are selling out, prompting locations to add additional showtimes to accommodate the rabid Mars ticket buyers. In all, 17 theaters added showtimes.

Those who pay to attend the Fan Event will get to see Veronica Mars on March 14, exclusively at AMC (and a few smaller non-AMC locations). Pony up $18 for the Mars ticket and Variety reports that you get "an exclusive Veronica Mars T-shirt, as well as a limited edition lanyard. The screening also will feature red carpet footage from the film’s premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival." Even though that premiere is slated to take place on Saturday, March 8. But what’s a little tape delay amongst friends and fans, right?

The idea of a "Super Ticket" is nothing new. Late last year, audience members paid extra to see Will Ferrell’s Anchorman sequel earlier than most, and fans are getting a little something extras from the Mars events. But this is a feature that has been asking its devoted base from Day One for cash. Can’t they get SOMETHING for nothing at some point in this exercise?

How about a clip from the upcoming film? That’s free, and you can watch it here.

In the meantime, Warner Bros. also provided a plot synopsis for the film, which will be written and directed by series creator Rob Thomas. Are you planning on seeing Kristen Bell and crew in Mars when it opens? And to what length are you willing to go to see it earlier than others?

On the eve of graduating law school, Veronica Mars has put Neptune and her amateur sleuthing days behind her. While interviewing at high-end New York law firms, Veronica Mars gets a call from her ex-boyfriend Logan who has been accused of murder. Veronica heads back to Neptune just to help Logan find an attorney, but when things don't seem right with how Logan's case is perceived and handled, Veronica finds herself being pulled back into a life she thought she had left behind."

10 Movie Remakes That Are Better Than The Original

$

This weekend, three ‘80s remakes will hit theaters: “RoboCop,” “Endless Love,” and Kevin Hart’s “About Last Night.”

While only one of those films has decent reviews (“About Last Night”), there are plenty of remakes that improve upon the original.

We've weeded through a bunch of remakes to find the best.

The movies on this list were selected according to audience and critical reception via Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic (where available) along with awards won.

"The Maltese Falcon" (1941)maltese falcon poster

Remake of: "The Maltese Falcon" (1931)
Rotten Tomatoes:
100% / 67%*

John Huston's adaptation of the best seller starring Humphrey Bogart as private detective Sam Spade has been called one of the American Film Institute's best films and has been nominated for three Oscars.

Even Roger Ebert called it one of the best movies ever made.

The film was so successful, Warner Bros. originally wanted Huston to work on a sequel in '42. That project was shelved since he and the actors went to work on other projects.

"The Ten Commandments" (1956)

the ten commandments

Remake of: "The Ten Commandments" (1923)
Rotten Tomatoes: 91% / 83%

More than 30 years after making the silent film, Cecil B. DeMille returned to direct the '56 classic. The movie won one Oscar for visual effects and airs every year around Easter on television.

"The Ten Commandments" is among the highest-grossing films of all time when adjusted for inflation.

"Airplane!" (1980)

airplane movie

Based on:"Zero Hour!" (1957)
Rotten Tomatoes: 98% / 46%**

Chances are you're unfamiliar with '50s movie "Zero Hour!" But if it didn't exist, there probably never would have been an "Airplane!" Leslie Nielsen's parody classic borrows heavily from the original

"The Thing" (1982)

the thing

Remake of:"The Thing From Another World" (1951)
Rotten Tomatoes: 79% / 87%

Time may have named the original the "Best sci-fi movie of the 1950s," however, you can't deny the brilliance of John Carpenter (the man who brought us "Halloween") and '80s Kurt Russell.

Total Film:

"The Thing is one of [Carpenter's] greatest moments, creating a terrifying atmosphere of claustrophobia, suspense and paranoia. And Kurt Russell is as good as he's ever been, wearing one of the best beards in movie history."

Empire:

"The Thing is a peerless masterpiece of relentless suspense, retina-wrecking visual excess and outright, nihilistic terror. ... Back in 1997 Carpenter told Empire that 'You'll never, ever, see anything like The Thing again.' Like MacReady and Childs we're still waiting. We might be for a long time yet."

"Little Shop of Horrors" (1986)little shop of horrors

Remake of: "The Little Shop of Horrors" (1960)
Rotten Tomatoes: 90% / 92%
Metacritic:  81%

Sure, the original may have had Jack Nicholson in it, but that was in a small, small role. While the critical reception for the original may edge out the remake, Frank Oz's rendition of the musical based off the original film with Steve Martin and James Belushi helped make it a cult classic.

The New York Times:

"WHO could have imagined that ''Little Shop of Horrors,'' the 1960 comic horror film shot by Roger Corman in two days' time, would continue to grow bigger, mightier and more formidable, much like the man-eating plant that is its unsung star? …  Mr. Martin's solo number has been hilariously staged, as he combines Elvis Presley posturing with a wonderfully wicked delivery of phrases like ''root canal.'' Seldom has one single film sequence, in which Mr. Martin gleefully terrifies his patients and brandishes the most ghastly array of instruments, done as much to set back the integrity of an entire profession."

"Fatal Attraction" (1987)

fatal attraction

Remake of: British television movie "Diversion"
Rotten Tomatoes: 78%
Metacritic:67

Technically, we're still going to count this one since it's probably not well-known that this was an adaptation of a TV movie.

Fun fact: "Diversion" writer and director James Dearden actually wrote the screenplay for the Hollywood film adaptation. The movie went on to become the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide and received six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director.

"True Lies" (1994)

true lies arnold schwarzenegger

Remake of: French film "La Totale!" (1991)
Rotten Tomatoes: 72%  / n/a

We'll admit, we've never seen the French film from Claude Zidi; however, you can't beat a James Cameron film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger secretly working as a government agent while his wife (Jamie Curtis) believes he's a computer salesman.

The film received an Oscar nod for Best Visual Effects. At the time, the film was one of the most expensive ever made (an estimated $115 million)

"Ocean's Eleven" (2001)

oceans eleven

The Rat Pack may have starred in the original, but it was George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt, who made robbing a Las Vegas casino look awesome while also infuriating Andy Garcia.

Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers

"What is Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh doing remaking a 1960 Rat Pack flick best remembered for Frank Sinatra's orange sweaters and Dean Martin being Dino? Answer: having a ball ... Forget Oscar, Ocean's Eleven is the coolest damned thing around."

Another phenomenal casting list comprised of Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga, and Alec Baldwin about an undercover cop (DiCaprio) trying to discover a mole (Damon) in the Massachusetts State Police force.

The film won four Oscars including Best Picture of the Year and Best Director.

Roger Ebert gave the film four stars, highlighting the positives of both films, while not discrediting either.

"The story is inspired by "Infernal Affairs" (2002) by Alan Mak and Andrew Lau, the most successful Hong Kong film of recent years. Indeed, having just re-read my 2004 review of that film, I find I could change the names, cut and paste it, and be discussing this film. But that would only involve the surface, the plot and a few philosophical quasi-profundities. What makes this a Scorsese film, and not merely a retread, is the director's use of actors, locations and energy, and its buried theme."

"True Grit" (2010)

Though John Wayne made the original film a classic and earned an Oscar for his performance, the update from the Coen brothers starring Jeff Bridges as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn along with Matt Damon and Josh Brolin was celebrated by critics and moviegoers not only for sticking closer to the source material, but also all of the actors' performances.

However, despite 10 Oscar nominations— including Best Picture, Director, and Actor — it won none.

The Denver Post's Lisa Kennedy:

"This 'True Grit' makes the original almost unwatchable except as a curio ... In the new version, Portis' novel is returned to its proper locale: the post-Civil War frontier where the James brothers raised such a nasty ruckus."

Ebert:

"In the Coen Brothers' “True Grit,” Jeff Bridges is not playing the John Wayne role. He's playing the Jeff Bridges role — or, more properly, the role created in the enduring novel by Charles Portis, much of whose original dialogue can be heard in this film. Bridges doesn't have the archetypal stature of the Duke. Few ever have. But he has here, I believe, an equal screen presence. We always knew we were looking at John Wayne in the original “True Grit” (1969). When we see Rooster Cogburn in this version, we're not thinking about Jeff Bridges. … Bridges' interpretation is no doubt closer to the reality of a lawman in those years of the West."

robocop murphy

It's been 27 years since the original "RoboCop" hit theaters.

Paul Verhoeven's 1987 R-rated classic gave us exaggerated gore, a vision of a crumbling Detroit, and one of the corniest — yet catchiest — taglines in "I'd buy that for a dollar."

With the remake in theaters this week, we're taking a look back at the original cast.

Most have gone on to star or cameo in other movies or television shows.

A favorite among the cast are small roles on Fox series "24."

THEN: Peter Weller played Detective Alex Murphy turned RoboCop.

NOW: Weller has appeared on "24,""Dexter," and has most recently starred on "Sons of Anarchy."

THEN: Nancy Allen played Murphy's loyal partner Anne Lewis.

10 Of The Best Dine-In Theaters In America

friends at movies movie theater

Whether you call it food and a flick or dinner and a movie, the trend of cinemas offering a full menu with a ticket to the silver screen is red hot right now.

Some, like Brooklyn’s now famous Nitehawk Cinema, provide in-theater table seating and waiter service. Others are more casual with a buy-it-in-the lobby and carry-it-to-your-seat policy.

Most, if not all, understand the value of a good libation. The ten theaters below run the gamut of service, but all have personal touches that make them stand out from the crowd. We call them, cinemas off the eatin’ path.

1. Enzian, Maitland, FL

Enzian served its first grub in 1985. Back then it was a decidedly down-home affair. The family-owned spot just outside Orlando showed second-run films at a discount and offered two staples: hot dogs and pizza. Today, Enzian is first run and first class—it’s currently showing the Oscar nominated short films, with the fantastic documentaryTim’s Vermeer coming up next. This major art house with love seats and banquettes presents fare with flair like truffle parmesan fries, pesto crab pizza, and shrimp and loaded grits. The wait staff wears all black to discretely serve and clear during the show. Set on three lush acres and surrounded by old oak trees, Enzian is dripping with cinematic atmosphere.

2. Aimie’s Dinner & Movie, Glens Falls, NY

Any theater that dishes out “Lord of the Onion Rings,” “Green Bean Mile,” “Sandwitches of Eastwick,” and “Sonny Corleone’s Scampi” (“worth getting whacked for”) knows its stuff. Tucked into the Three Squares Historic District of this upstate burg since 2001, Aimie’s is actually two cozy 50-seat theaters back-to-back with booths, banquettes, and table service. Independent films do best, says co-owner Sandy Metivier, and she’ll rent out for kids’ parties and throw on the Justin Bieber DVD. A modest $7.95 minimum on food and drinks plus a tasty $5.50 ticket makes for cheap thrills in the dark.

The Credits requests: Fried Green Tomatoes

3. Brewvies Cinema Pub, Salt Lake City, UT

Brewvies = Brewskies + Movies, get it? With 19 different beers on tap, plus a menu of corn dogs, falafel, fish tacos, and cheese fries to soak up the suds, this 17-year-old theater has that frat feel. In fact, college students get in on a discount. Need to kill time before the show? Hang at the bar (yes, students, they sell cocktails, too) and shoot some pool. The twin 170-seat theaters feature couches and tables, plus typical theater seating with counters running the length of each row to rest your brew on. You order before entering, get a number, and when your food is ready your number lights up on the big Keno board. Come and get it!

The Credits requests: Animal House

Colin Farrell's Romantic Movie 'Winter's Tale' Bombs — Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

winter's tale colin farrell

No one wanted to go out and see Colin Farrell's Valentine's Day flick "Winter's Tale."

The Warner Bros.' picture flopped over President's Day weekend bringing in $8.1 million.

The film was estimated to cost $60 million to produce.

In comparison, both of Kevin Hart's releases — "Ride Along" and "About Last Night"— made more than $10 million for the 4-day weekend and one of them has been in theaters for five weeks.

"Winter's Tale" follows a trend of Farrell films that don't perform well when he's the lead. Granted, it was difficult to believe Farrell, who's 37, to play a 21-year-old in this film, but romance movies and action flicks like "Dead Man Down" and "Total Recall"* haven't performed well for the star.

On the flip side, quirky cult films like "Seven Psychopaths" and "In Bruges" are his strong suit, despite not receiving wide acclaim. You can't write the star off completely since he has been in recent hits including "Horrible Bosses" and "Saving Mr. Banks."

Here are this week's winners and losers at the box office:

10. Zac Efron's "That Awkward Moment" rounds out the top ten in week three with $3.9 million. The Focus Features comedy has made a total of $21.9 million.

9. "Lone Survivor" is still going strong after two months in theaters adding another $4.7 million to its $119 million haul.

8. Here's how much  power Disney's "Frozen" still has at theaters. The animated flick nearly beat out Colin Farrell's Valentine's Day flick in its 13th week with $8 million. "Frozen" is on its way to $1 billion worldwide with more than $957 million.

7. Colin Farrell's "Winter's Tale" made a disappointing $8.1 million opening weekend.

6. Kevin Hart's "Ride Along" actually saw a bump from last week with $10 million. The $25 million Universal movie has made $120.9 million worldwide.

5. Teen romance "Endless Love" brought in $15 million opening weekend. The '80s remake starring Alex Pettyfer ("Magic Mike") cost an estimated $20 million.

4. Sony's "The Monuments Men" more than doubled earnings for "Winter's Tale" with $18 million in week two. George Clooney's World War II movie has made $55 million worldwide.

3. The "RoboCop" remake bowed to Kevin Hart with $25.6 million. That figure fell in line — and above most tracking estimates for the Sony film. The studio will make most of its money overseas on this film. "RoboCop" has already made $69 million abroad.

2. It's pretty tough to deny that Kevin Hart is box-office gold now. His latest comedy "About Last Night" brought in a big $28.9 million over the four-day weekend.

1. The big winner for the weekend was "The LEGO Movie." While that wasn't a surprise, the movie made an astronomical $63.5 million in week two. That's only an 8% drop from its opening weekend. The Lego film will cross the $200 million mark this week.

*Note: While "Total Recall" wasn't a box-office hit domestically, it performed better overseas.

The first trailer for "The Guardians of the Galaxy" debuts tonight on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

Here's What The 'Transformers 4' Dinobots Will Look Like

The next "Transformers" movie is out this June.

The fourth installment in the franchise, "Transformers: Age of Extinction," will star Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, a mechanic who gets involved with the "robots in disguise."

One of the most anticipated aspects of the sequel will be the introduction of "dinobots"— robots that transform into dinosaurs. Earlier this month, we saw a brief look at the dinos when Paramount released the first trailer for the movie during the Super Bowl.

Now, we have a better look at what to expect on screen.

Monday, we were invited to check out Hasbro's lineup of toys for the year at the 2014 Toy Fair. Among the new Transformers were a bunch of the dinobots you'll see in the film.

These will definitely be among the toys your kids will want this year. Check them out below.

Grimlock
This is the T-Rex you see Optimus Prime on in the trailer.

We got a kick out of seeing Hasbro re-enact the scene from the trailer. The cool thing about this larger dinobot was that he easily transformed in one swift action from this ...
grimlock dinobot transformers 4 age of extinction toy fair hasbro... to this. This toy in particular is the costliest Transformer we saw at $80.grimlock transformers 4 age of extinction toy fair hasbro

Of course, the movie won't only feature Dinobots.

Hound, in green, transforms into a military vehicle.

He'll return in the new movie.bumblebee transformers 4Lockdown (top left) and Crosshairs (green, top right) can be seen here. Grimlock action figures were everywhere we looked (orange).lockdown transformers 4 age of extinctionHere's another photo of a lot of the figures together. The Transformers for the younger age group switch quickly and effortlessly from machine to vehicle (or robot to dino and back). That's good news for parents who otherwise have to try and figure out how to make the change on their own. autobot hound strafe transformers 4 age of extinctionCool thing about this photo: The transformer in the center, Drift, turns into a Bugatti. We hope Michael Bay doesn't blow him up.bumblebee autobot transformers 4 age of extinctionAnd, of course, here's Optimus Prime.optimus prime transformers 4 age of extinction toys

Among all the Transformers we spotted, we also came across one that looks like a big spoiler for the film. If you're big on "Transformers" you may have spotted him above.

Don't scroll anymore if you don't want spoilers.

Here's who you should expect to be the villain in "Age of Extinction":

Galvatron
If you remember the villain from the last series, Megatron, Galvatron is usually known as a bigger, badder version of him reborn.

Katherine Heigl's Fundraiser Bombs As Fans Refuse To Donate To Her New Film

Katherine Heigl

Amid reports that Katherine Heigl was a diva, hard to work with, and had an overall bad attitude on film sets, fans didn’t take the news too well and kind of dumped her as a rom-com queen.

The last straw may have been in 2008, when the actress personally withdrew her Emmy nomination for Grey’s Anatomy, blaming writers that she wasn’t given substantial enough material to warrant an Emmy.

Now, Heigl has tried to do a 180 on her image and reputation, and fans aren’t buying it.

Literally aren’t buying it. Heigl’s new film, Jenny’s Wedding, is being crowdfunded on Indiegogo, and currently has raised $18,443 of its $150,000 goal.

Now, Katherine Heigl is personally asking fans to help pay for Jenny’s Wedding in a video on the site.

“We could really use your help! We have lots of really fun, exciting perks… We really cannot do it without you,” Heigl says. It doesn’t help that her enthusiasm feels a bit forced, since she’s trying to eat humble pie and get her movie off the ground at the same time.

The “perks” that the 27 Dresses actress speaks of are for donors, but most of them haven’t been purchased yet.

So far, only three people are interested in a signed movie poster by Heigl for $200, and only one wants an “Official Wedding Album” signed by Heigl for $300. Nobody wants a signed poster from Heigl, who plays Jenny, with a “personal message” for $400 yet.

I’m hearing crickets. The cut-off is March 28 for the film’s goal, so it ain’t looking good for the cast.

“The money we raise will allow us to elevate our post-production to the highest level,” the video states. “We shot a beautiful movie. We’d like to keep post-production to that same standard. Don’t fail us.”

Do people want Jenny’s Wedding to fail because Heigl plays a lesbian and they don’t want her (or anyone straight, for that matter) to receive critical acclaim for playing a lesbian? Or are people just over Heigl completely? This film may mark her 28th — and final — wedding dress.

You can watch Heigl’s plea below:

2 Charts That Show The Astronomical Success Of 'The LEGO Movie'

the lego movie

"The LEGO Movie" had an absolutely amazing second weekend at the box office.

Over the course of three days it brought in $50 million. In four days? $63 million

That's huge for a movie that brought in $69.1 million in its opening weekend. Why?

I can't remember the last time a movie dropped only about 8% in ticket sales in its second week. And, I'm not just talking about an animated film, I'm talking about any movie in general. "Avatar" came close in 2009. Typically, a movie will drop 20%-30%. If it's a really high-performing film a 15%-20% drop is more likely.

To illustrate the point, here are two charts showing just how big "The LEGO Movie" is at theaters.

The film comes fifth among animated pictures for second-largest weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo. Accounting for its four-day holiday weekend haul of $63 million puts it ahead of 2010’s “Toy Story 3.” It’s also worth noting that three of those movies are part of well-established animated franchises while “The Incredibles” has the Pixar stamp attached to it.

box office second weekends

Here’s another look at the five animated movies that have had huge second weekends at the box office. Everything but “The LEGO Movie” has seen far steeper drops in week two.

animated movies with second largest box office weekend

What does all this mean? "The LEGO Movie" has great staying power at theaters. In two weeks, it has already made $195 million worldwide. That's good news for Warner Bros. since they're already working on a sequel.

'Endless Love' Author Trashes Movie Remake As 'Mangled Beyond Recognition'

Endless Love

The book "Endless Love" was a bestseller by two-time National Book Award finalist Scott Spencer in 1979.

In 1981, the book was adapted into a Brooke Shields romantic drama that became a moderate box-office success.

This Valentine's Day, a reboot of the film — starring Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde  hit theaters and brought in just $15 million opening weekend on an estimated $20 million budget. It came in fifth at the box office and scored a measly 15% on RottenTomatoes.

But audiences aren't the only ones who don't love the latest remake, original author Scott Spencer blasted the film to The Hollywood Reporter after watching just the below film trailer.

I presume you have had the experience of having something you said repeated to a third party, attributed to you but mangled beyond recognition. I think it’s a common phenomenon, especially when relationships are unraveling – and one ends up sounding a bit hysterical as one insists, "But that’s not what I said! I never said that! I would NEVER EVER say that!"

This is why it’s a comfort to write down what you want to last.

Endless Love was botched – misquoted, as it were – once in 1981, when Franco Zeffirelli tried to make a movie out of it, and it seems as if it has been even more egregiously and ridiculously misunderstood in the movie Universal Pictures is releasing. (I gave up control of the movie rights to my novel in 1980.) I had brief contact with the first filmmakers who tried to adapt my novel, and I had no contact whatsoever with the second wave.

Read the rest of Spencer's rant here >
