The new 'Star Trek' wins the weekend box office, but performs below expectations

It looks like the Trekkies came out in force to support the latest movie highlighting the voyages of the USS Enterprise, "Star Trek Beyond," as it won the weekend with an estimated $59.6 million, according to Variety.

However, it would have been better for the film's studio, Paramount, if a few more outside of the fan base showed up this weekend, as "Beyond" has the lowest opening weekend out of the two previous "Trek" releases in this most recent reboot of the sci-fi franchise.

With a $185 million budget, this opening weekend came in lower than the projections, but it can rebound with continued strong turnouts in the coming weeks at the domestic box office and strong openings worldwide.

But with 2009's "Star Trek" opening with $75.2 million and 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness" taking in $70.1 million on its opening (both directed by J.J. Abrams), the drop for the third film, which is directed by Justin Lin, is a warning sign that the franchise needs some tweaking.

The issues may be less the story than the marketing. With an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics enjoyed the movie, but it seems Paramount needed to think outside the box to get people other than Trekkies to go to the theaters.

In second place is the animated movie, "The Secret Life of Pets," which continues to have a strong theatrical run taking in $29.3 million this weekend. It's now taken in $260.7 million total domestically.

But the same can't be said for the newest animated movie at the multiplex, "Ice Age: Collision Course," which only took in $21 million over the weekend. It marks the worst opening in the five-film franchise.

The big winner of the weekend is Warner Bros.'s $5 million-budgeted horror "Lights Out," which took in an incredible $21.6 million. A new horror franchise is born.

The big problem with Hollywood movies, according to Joss Whedon

$

The Avengers shot, Marvel

The modern studio system is, in very polite language, set in its ways. At least, that's what the analysts and creative types would tell you, and it's a hard point to argue against. One of the people who probably has the most to say about the subject is renowned TV show-runner, and former gatekeeper of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joss Whedon, and he laid down a detailed schematic about what he feels is wrong with Hollywood today that's hard to argue against.

We were on hand for Whedon's hour-long talk at San Diego Comic Con, and what we're about to share with you came from the answer to a question in the audience. That query basically asked the director of "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" how to be a successful filmmaker in the modern climate of independent film playing David to the studio run system's Goliath. Joss Whedon, in his personal wisdom, had the following remarks to deliver:

"It's gotten to a state where movie studios are pretty relentless about trying to have an in before they start production. That's not the case for all films, but it is the case for a ton of them, especially the big-budget ones. Part of the problem is there's a dialogue going on between audiences and studios that is devolving, because they keep finding a lower common denominator. This doesn't mean the films are bad --- it just means that the ways in which they're approaching what they're going to make have become kind of ossified. At the same time, audiences are more likely to turn out for something that they already know or like. The problem is that there isn't really a willingness by a lot of people to go into something that they don't already know. None of this helps you by the way, sorry. But it's something that needs to be addressed."

In true Whedon fashion, there's a lot to unpack here, but it's all pretty valid if you've been keeping an eye on box office trends and grosses over the past couple of decades.

zootopia hidden mickey

To a certain point, modern studios have become over-dependent on nostalgic cash-ins, franchise starters, and adaptations of popular stories and characters - all of which seem like sure fire box office gold. Just look at the top 10 films of 2016 so far, where only two original entries, "Zootopia" and "The Mermaid,” are among comic franchise entries like "Captain America: Civil War" and "Deadpool,” as well as sequels like "Finding Dory" and "Kung Fu Panda 3.” Keep in mind, this is only with half a year's box office in mind, and the rest of the year is still full of sequels, retreads, and reboots for audiences to keep viewing. Yet, as Joss Whedon said above, this isn't a completely bad thing.

Audiences, like it or not, have specific tastes. So, obviously, some projects spawn directly from that information, much as "Deadpool" actually became a movie after leaked test footage stirred the crowd up the right way. Of course, for every film that the crowd directly asks for, there's at least two that spawn because of such demand, as the studio system thinks that these additional projects will draw even more money to their cause. It's this thinking that Joss Whedon seems to have taken issue with, as too much of the market is choked with projects the audience already knows, and not enough fresh prospects to show them what they didn't know they wanted.

deadpool halloween video

So while there are indeed a lot of "bankable" projects out in Hollywood, their sole existence isn't the problem. Rather, it's the over-reliance on such stories that causes issues, and that's partially because audiences keep showing up for what the know, over what they don't. It's not an easy problem, and the solution is more than likely twice as hard. But when filmmakers like Joss Whedon, folks whose bread and butter has been such entertainments, start to speak out, that's saying something. What it's saying is that studios need to branch out into new territory, and audiences need to follow the path.

That said, if there's a weekend you're looking to go to the movies, and you've already seen "Star Trek Beyond" or "Jason Bourne", why not give "Nerve" or another film you've probably never heard of, a chance? The worst that could happen is you've got a film to warn your friends against.

The long-awaited 'Trainspotting' sequel finally has a trailer

T2: trainspotting

The original cast of Danny Boyle's critically acclaimed 1996 film "Trainspotting" reunites in a new teaser trailer for the film's upcoming sequel, "T2: Trainspotting 2."

Based on the novel "Porno," a sequel to Irvine Welsh's 1993 novel "Trainspotting," the second film — picking up a title cue from the "Terminator" sequel — will reportedly take place 20 years after the events of the first film. The original cult classic starred Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner, and Robert Carlyle as destitute heroin users in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In the brief new teaser, a train rambles along a track before revealing the film's four stars, Spud (Bremner), Renton (McGregor), Sick Boy (Miller), and Begbie (Carlyle), standing together alongside the railway.

"It’s been 20 years since we met these characters," director Danny Boyle told The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming sequel. "John Hodge’s screenplay brilliantly explores what's happened to them — and to us — in the intervening years."

"T2: Trainspotting 2" will open in theaters in February 2017.

Watch the teaser trailer below.

Ezra Miller, who plays The Flash in the new "Justice League" movie, has stolen our hearts once again.

At Warner Bros. Pictures' panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Miller burst on stage dressed in "Lord of The Rings" garb. He wore a gray cape and floppy hat and carried a staff, looking just like Gandalf.

Fans went nuts for the young actor's cosplay.

In the past, celebrities have gotten away with exploring Comic-Con by dressing in cosplay, thus, being unrecognizable to their fans. In 2013, "Breaking Bad" actor Bryan Cranston fooled everyone by wearing a Heisenberg mask.

It looks likes Miller's costume wasn't inconspicuous enough to grant him the same privacy. We're not sure if he wore the cosplay around the convention center.

Marvel showed footage for next summer's 'Spider-Man' movie at Comic-Con — here's what was in it

tom holland spider man

Fans were very excited when it was announced that Marvel Studios had struck a deal with Sony to allow Spider-Man to become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Even though Tom Holland would become the third actor in less than a decade to portray Your Friendly Neighborhood, the possibilities it opened were endless. Fortunately, when Holland’s take on Peter Parker made his debut in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War, it definitely lived up to the hype. Spider-Man was one of the most praised aspects of the film, and many couldn’t wait to see more of the Web Head.

After stealing scenes with an ensemble cast, Holland will be placed front and center in his own vehicle, titled Spider-Man: Homecoming. The movie is due out in theaters July 2017 and recently began principal photography in Atlanta. While there’s still plenty of work to be done, director Jon Watts has shot enough footage to present a brief sizzle reel during Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2016. It was something cut specifically for the crowd in attendance, but we were there to see it.

spiderman-eyes

The trailer opens with an amusing montage set to Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” showing all of the Avengers’ (including Stephen Strange) high school yearbook portraits to illustrate that all heroes have a beginning. It then cuts to Midtown High to provide a breakdown of Peter Parker’s day. In addition to attending classes and admiring cute girls from a distance, he’s also working hard on maintaining his crime fighting lifestyle. There’s funny bits of comedy when Parker is watching a YouTube video of his battle against Giant Man in Civil Warduring a science seminar, and when he’s mixing a new web fluid formula at school.

Since Homecoming has only just begun principal photography, just about all of the reel was dedicated to depicting the high school scenes (with appearances by Zendaya, Angourie Rice, and other teenagers), but there was a portion of costumed Spidey action. Parts of what is most likely the set piece hinted at in leaked set photos (Spider-Man on a truck) was shown, giving the fans the briefest of tastes of classic web-slinging action. It ended with confirmation that the villain would be the Vulture, whose appearance from the comics has been upgraded. The antagonist looks like he’s wearing an Iron Man suit with wings. That may not necessarily be the case, but the outfit was certainly mechanical in nature.

spider man homecoming vulture

Marvel is known for blending multiple genres with their films, giving each one its own unique feel. Homecominghas been described numerous times in the past as a John Hughes comedy, which was reiterated again during the panel. The tone established by the footage shown supports that claim, taking the style of the classic filmmaker and updating it for modern audiences. Peter is very much a nerdy, geeky kid, one who is called a loser when he’s caught staring at potential love interests from across the cafeteria. Holland has been called the “perfect” Peter Parker by none other than Stan Lee, and the role certainly seems to be in strong hands.

To date, the general consensus is that Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 is the best feature film about the wall-crawler, since it perhaps more than any other production truly captured the struggle Peter Parker faces on a daily basis – where he must balance the his personal life with his responsibilities as Spider-Man. The Homecoming sizzle reel seemed to suggest that Watt’s film will put this element of the character in the spotlight, ending with Peter trying to duck out of a study hall session and asked by a fellow student where he goes all the time. Spider-Man is one of the most popular heroes in pop culture because he’s one of us, and Tom Holland definitely conveys that.

Doctor Strange opens November 4, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2– May 5, 2017; Spider-Man: Homecoming– July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok– November 3, 2017; Black Panther– February 16, 2018;Avengers: Infinity War Part 1– May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp– July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel– March 8, 2019;Avengers: Infinity War Part 2– May 3, 2019; and as-yet untitled Marvel movies on July 12, 2019, and on May 1, July 10, and November 6 in 2020.

The next 'Thor' movie had no official footage at Comic-Con, so it did something hilarious instead

thor hammer the dark world

Because Thor: Ragnarok has just begun production down in Australia, Marvel Studios wasn't able to edit any footage from the film before their big Saturday panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. This was certainly disappointing for anyone sitting in Hall H hoping to see the God of Thunder face off with the Asgardian goddess of Death... but the good news was that the company brought something else instead. You see, writer/director Taika Waititi has a rather brilliant comedic mind, so he decided to put together Civil War: Team Thor: a short, hilarious documentary detailing what Thor has been up to since The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As it turns out, Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) really hasn't been up to much of anything. Following the events that happened in Sokovia, he decided to take some "me time" - which found him moving to Australia and finding a roommate in average dude Daryl Jacobson. He decided that he wanted to be around normal people for a bit -- though this seems to vex his roomy a bit, especially when Mjolnir is sitting on the floor and preventing Daryl from vacuuming.

During this free period, Thor has continued to do good deeds -- such as visiting schools to talk to children about his Avengers teammates -- but it seems that most of his time is spent bugging his new best friend. Visiting Daryl at work, he has him fire off some "electronic mail" to Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, checking in with them about their tiff and trying to find out if either one of them wants his help. Unfortunately, his tact is a bit less than graceful, as he asks Iron Man about the fun time he had building an artificially intelligent robot that nearly destroyed the world, and tells Captain America that he still hasn't told the Avengers about the time he goaded Cap into killing some prisoners.

Giving us some more insight into Thor's daily life on Midgard, the documentary also did a quick tour of the God of Thunder's bedroom -- which features runes on a sign outside that say "Keep Out, Daryl." In addition to having a special bed where Mjonir sleeps, he also has a giant board that he's using to investigate the Infinity Stones. At the center of it all is Thanos, who Thor describes thusly:

This fellow is somehow in the center of it all. He's the man in the chair. He's purple. He has a magic glove. He doesn't like standing up.

While Thor can't get any kind of response from Iron Man or Captain America, he does occasionally meet up with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to discuss issues -- like the scientist's problem he has with wearing long pants, hulking out, and being left with cutoffs. What seriously bums the Asgardian out, however, is that Tony is still calling Bruce for help, and that Bruce is turning down money to "join [the] pissing contest." Certainly a problem is that Thor doesn't have a phone, but he has a simple solution for that: "Send a raven."

Sadly it doesn't look like the Civil War: Team Thor documentary will be getting posted online, but we definitely have our fingers crossed that it will be featured on the Thor: RagnarokBlu-ray. It seems selfish given that we already got to see it in Hall H, but it was so hilarious that we want to watch it time and time again.

Disney's newest princess won't have a prince — and that's really important

moana

A panel at last week's Comic-Con in San Diego revealed something very exciting about Disney's upcoming animated film "Moana": Its princess won't have a prince.

According to the Los Angeles Times, when an attendee asked how titular character Moana would be different from previous Disney princesses, co-director John Musker had a simple but powerful response:

"There will be no romance in the movie."

The film tells the story of Moana, a 16-year-old who sets out on a voyage in the South Pacific to find the demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) in order to save her family from danger.

Moana isn't the first Disney princess without a love interest. Merida, the protagonist in 2012's "Brave,"bests her suitors in an archery competition so she won't have to marry any of them. And 2013's "Frozen" features Elsa, a princess with magical powers who's too busy belting and building ice castles to do anything as petty as date.

What makes "Moana" different is the complete absence of romance in the plot. It frees up the protagonist for daring adventures across the ocean, yes, but it also upends the expectation that marriage is the only fate for all female characters. Marriage isn't the only option for women in real life — in fact, marriage rates in the US have been steadily declining for decades. So why should marriage be the only option for women in movies?

It's about time we got Disney princesses who better reflect diverse female experiences. Apparently the panel audience at Comic-Con agrees: When Musker announced the romance-free plot, the whole room burst into applause, according to a vlogger who was in attendance.

"Moana" will hit theaters November 23.

Thunderbird Fantastic beasts

Comic-Con has gifted us with a new trailer for "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," the beginning of a Harry Potter spinoff movie trilogywritten by J.K. Rowling herself.

The movie comes out on November 19. But in the meanwhile, there's a lot to unpack from this trailer. It's filled with areas and magical animals we've never seen before.

Rowling published a book with the same name in 2001, "written" by Newt Scamander, the main character in the movie. The book goes through all the magical beasts that Scamander encountered on his travels and catalogs them. I've consulted it to try to identify all the magical animals in the trailer, but there are still some mysteries.

Here's a complete breakdown of the trailer. Check it out:

Before the footage starts rolling, we get a black screen and some voiceover. It sounds like a witness's account of a supernatural event. "It was like, um, like a ghost!" The footage starts with Percival Graves, an American auror, entering a house. It looks like he's going in to inspect something.

The camera pans out, and the building turns out to be in ruins. The voiceover continues, "I saw its eyes, shining white eyes! And it dove down underground." The description doesn't match anything in the book version of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," which is Newt Scamander's catalogue of magical beasts he's aware of.

We see the witness, dressed in a gray coat. Then there's a boom. He looks up and the walls are cracking. Already, it feels like we're dropped in the middle of a supernatural mystery.

The 18 best movies on Netflix you've probably never heard of

Zero Motivation

There are so many movies on Netflix that your typical Friday night is probably spent trying to find something to watch, as opposed to actually watching something.

The streaming service has a huge, rotating selection of movies both old and new. It is hard to navigate through Netflix's massive library of movies and unfortunately, Netflix hasn't come up with an innovative way to make your search easier.

Here are the 18 best movies on Netflix you've probably never heard of.

"A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" (2014)

What it's about: In the post-apocalyptic Iranian ghost town known only as Bad City, a nameless teenage vampire (Sheila Vand) wanders the night.

Why you should see it: The film was described as an Iranian vampire Western when it was first released in 2014, making it all the more intriguing. That description may be partially false: It was shot in California, but it was directed by an Iranian-American director, and all the characters speak in Farsi.

"A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" is flawed but also riveting in many ways. Mainly, it doesn't look and feel like anything else out today. This is Ana Lily Amirpour's feature directorial debut. Directorial debuts don't have to be perfect, but they should at least show a lot of promise. And boy does "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" show a lot of insanely creative potential from its director.

"The Babadook" (2014)

What it's about: A spirit from a children's book haunts a single mother and her son.

Why you should see it: This Australian export is one of the best horror movies in a very long time. It feels as if it builds on a lot of horror classics, from 1968's "Rosemary's Baby" to 1980's "The Shining." Yet it also feels like the kind of horror film that non-horror fans will greatly enjoy. It is a fresh, well-made spin on some well-worn genre territory.

"Bernie" (2011)

What it's about: Based on a true story that shows that truth is stranger than fiction, a mortician (Jack Black) is accused of murder.

Why you should see it: "Bernie" is hard to describe in a short sentence, which is part of what makes it so brilliant.

This is a dark comedy that is also a crime drama and a mockumentary in which actors act alongside real people. Meanwhile, Jack Black gives the best performance of his career, one that could've been Oscar worthy if awards opened their hearts up to comedy. It is also one of the best movies Richard Linklater has ever directed, and he also did "Dazed & Confused" and "Boyhood."

We finally know the villain in next year's 'Spider-Man' movie

A long time member of Spider-Man's rogues gallery is finally getting his shot at cinematic fame next year. It was confirmed at Comic-Con today that Vulture will be appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming. As an added bonus, they also released concept art of the winged foe, and it's finally been released to the masses. Check it out!

As you can see, Vulture's green color scheme in has been retained, but the suit looks way more technological than what Adrian Toomes wears in the comics. The discs look like the mechanisms propelling him, and he'll use his arms underneath the wings to steer himself. Unfortunately, his face is obscured by shadows, and the actor playing Vulture wasn't mentioned at the movie's Hall H presentation. So even though Michael Keaton has join supposedly as a villain, we can't say for sure yet whether he'll be the one wearing the wings. Vulture's inclusion in Spider-Man: Homecomingwas first rumored back in April, and now that he's been confirmed, we're left wondering what his fight with Tom Holland's Spider-Man will look on the big screen.

Debuting in 1963's The Amazing Spider-Man #2, Vulture was the second super villain who Spider-Man faced in the comics, preceded by The Chameleon. Adrian Toomes was a former electronics engineer who built a special flight harness after he lost his job. Others have taken the Vulture mantle for themselves briefly, but Adrian remains the most frequent person to antagonize the Web-Slinger with those dangerous wings. Back when Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 was in development, John Malkovich was expected to play Vulture, but that movie was eventually scrapped in favor of the Amazing Spider-Man reboot. In that continuity, Vulture's wings were seen at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and had that series continued, it looked like he would have been a member of the Sinister Six.

So now we know for sure that Vulture will be Spider-Man: Homecoming's main antagonist, but he may not be the movie's only villain. It was also rumored that The Tinkerer will show up as the man who supplies Vulture with his tech, but that remains to be seen. Aside from Michael Keaton, Logan Marshall-Green and Bokeem Woodbine have been reportedly cast as bad guys, but we don't know yet who any of their characters' identities are. Regardless, Peter Parker is going to have his hands busy taking on Vulture, especially since he also has to worry about turning in is biology homework in on time!

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017. What do you think about Vulture's inclusion? Is he a good villain choice or should they have gone with someone else? Let us know in the comments below.
