New 'Hateful Eight' Poster Announces 2015 Release Date For Quentin Tarantino’s Next Film

Quentin Tarantino

Fresh off confirmation straight from the horse’s mouth that The Hateful Eight will be Quentin Tarantino’s next film, we have the very first, official The Hateful Eight poster.

Not only is this an excellent piece of artwork that teases the bloody story of the Western, but the poster also confirms a planned 2015 release (likely in December) as well as the fact that Tarantino will shoot the pic in “Super CinemaScope”.

We previously heard that Tarantino was aiming to film The Hateful Eight in 70mm, and this poster indeed confirms that we’re in for one epic-looking Western.  The story follows a group of passengers on a stagecoach that get caught and trapped in a blizzard, where they’re forced to confront the ratcheting tension that develops.

We now know that Tarantino intends to start production on The Hateful Eight in early 2015, and while some might see that as late given the proposed 2015 release date, you’ll remember that Django Unchained was still shooting in July 2012 before its release in December.

The cast thus far announced for The Hateful Eight includes Bruce DernSamuel L. JacksonMichael MadsenKurt RussellJames RemarAmber TamblynWalton Goggins, and Zoe Bell.  Of course, further additions or omissions could occur before production begins, but this is quite the stellar lineup and I’m incredibly eager to see what Tarantino puts together with yet another Western.

Read the official synopsis below, followed by the Hateful Eight poster via Empire.

The Hateful Eight follows the steadily ratcheting tension that develops after a blizzard diverts a stagecoach from its route, and traps a pitiless and mistrustful group which includes a competing pair of bounty hunters, a renegade Confederate soldier, and a female prisoner in a saloon in the middle of nowhere.

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' End-Credits Scene Leaks Online

guardians of the galaxy the collector

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is in theaters Friday and everyone is buzzing about a possible appearance by Marvel sci-fi character Howard the Duck after his name appeared in the film's credits.

Earlier this week, director James Gunn confirmed to /Film Howard the Duck can be spotted the first time when Benicio del Toro's character, The Collector (a man who, you guessed it, collects things), appears on screen.

It looks like the duck will also pop up more prominently in the movie's end-credits' scene again with The Collector.

Vulture discovered a clip of filmed footage uploaded onto social media site VK, essentially Russia's version of Facebook, that appears to be a post-credits sequence for the film.

Having seen "Guardians," the scene makes sense with what occurs in the movie. I won't spoil what was in the footage until the film's release, but Howard the Duck is prominently seen in the clip.

The clip has since been pulled, but is currently still here if you want to watch.

If you want to see a screengrab of Howard, scroll down.

Marvel decided to not air any end-credits scenes during press screenings in order for fans to be among the first to see the footage.

Don't expect that to be the only end-credits scene for "Guardians of the Galaxy." We wouldn't be surprised if there's also a mid-credits sequence hinting at the future of the Marvel universe as well.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is expected to have a huge $70 million weekend at the box office. Disney and Marvel have already announced a sequel.

Stephen Colbert Gave A Heartwarming, Geektastic Speech During 'The Hobbit' Panel At Comic-Con

stephen colbert sdcc 2014When the "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" Comic-Con panel opened, there may have been no bigger fan in attendance than TV host Stephen Colbert.

Colbert — whose "Lord of the Rings" fanhood landed him a cameo in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug"— opened the panel by giving a heartfelt and geektastic speech about his love of J.R.R. Tolkien's series.

Colbert detailed how much he treasured the stories and his hesitations over director Peter Jackson helming the series.

It was great.

Read it in its entirety below:

"Hello. If I could only go back in time and show this to my 13-year-old self!

Welcome to today’s panel on The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and a celebration of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth: The Battle for Six Movies. My name is Stephen Colbert, and if you are anything like me, you don’t just love these stories — you treasure the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Let me take you to a time long ago, an earlier age: the time of Clinton, the dark days of dial-up internet. A rumor came to us that director Peter Jackson would be making an adaptation of the trilogy. At the time, many of us knew him only from his movie Heavenly Creatures, and as great as that movie is, I wasn’t sure there was room for hysterical, murderous teenage girls in Middle-earth … other than, of course, Éowyn.

I was worried that somehow he would take away my treasure, my horde of precious Middle-earth stories. It was a very possessive, obsessive, very dragon-y feeling, so I found and followed everything I could about the progress of these movies. I remember seeing the first stills from the filming of Helm’s Deep. I looked at every casting announcement. I scoured the work of John Howe and Alan Lee. I read the online debates about fantasy versus fairy tales. And I began to have hope.

Not just hope the movies would be good … I was given hope that finally, finally people might not roll their eyes when I started talking about Middle-earth. That my head full of facts from Fëanor to Faramir might suddenly have some social value! That someone might say to me, “Hey Stephen, you know a lot about Tolkien. Can you explain something to me?” And I would say “Yes, oh God yes, I will!”

And then the movies broke upon the world, and to steal a line from C.S. Lewis, “Here were beauties that pierced like swords and burned like cold iron.” Here were movies that would break your heart, good beyond hope. And rather than take away our treasure, Peter and Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens and Richard Taylor and Grant Major and Dan Hennah and the cast and the crew and WETA Digital and the land and the people of New Zealand itself added to our stories, complemented our imagination. The only problem, as I saw it, was that at a total running time of eleven and a half hours, they were too damn short."

You can watch Colbert's speech and the entire "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" Comic-Con panel below:

Here's How Groot And Rocket Raccoon Look Without Visual Effects In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

"Guardians of the Galaxy" hits theaters Friday and is expected to have a huge $70 million-plus opening weekend.

While Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista star, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper will lend their voices to two scene-stealing characters, a larger than life, tree-like creature Groot and feisty raccoon Rocket.

You'll see the two in the film like this:guardians of the galaxy groot rocket

However, behind-the-scenes here's how Groot and Rocket actually look while filming:vin diesel motion capture groot

Polish actor Krystian Godlewski wore a motion capture suit to give the physical cues for Groot and provide a model for actors to look at while filming.

You can also spot Sean Gunn in the film as Kraglin, the sidekick to Michael Rooker's character Yondu.guardians of the galaxy yondu kraglin

In the film's production notes, executive producer Nik Korda explains how the duo's motion capture performances helps the final CG versions of the characters come together.

“It’s very important for the animators to see a real-life person performing in the right lighting environment, on the right set, to see how they move, their reach, and so on," Korda says. "Even though it is Sean down on his haunches, it gives us all a sense of the attitude, and Krystian gives us a sense of Groot’s lumbering movements, which help create the animated performance.”

Special effects makeup designer David White also made two life-size versions of Rocket Raccoon along with a bust of Groot as aids for visual effects and lighting.guardians of the galaxy life size rocket

"The reason the filmmakers wanted these is because they take them onto the set and they put them in little chairs and they put them next to the doors and it gives them a good indication of where visual effects needs to pick up and whether Rocket can actually reach certain things or use certain devices," White says. "Also they offer them up to the camera at the end of the shot and it just gives them an extra little hint of the lighting because they’re actually painted exactly as they want.”

The New 'Interstellar' Trailer Is Flat Out Incredible

0
0

Holy choose-your-favorite-expletive here, Christopher Nolan has done it again.

When I heard that he showed up at Comic Con last week and showed off this beautiful trailer, I'd heard some pretty big noise about just how good this trailer was. So the moment I saw the new Interstellar trailer online, I had to find the nearest, darkest space and replicate the perfect atmosphere to watch a trailer about space, love, and redemption for the human race.

I suggest you do the same, click the play button below, and come back right after for some thoughts.

Thanks to IndieWire for having that trailer up at the speed of light, which is exactly how fast my mind is going after watching that trailer. We previously gamed out that Interstellar was, above all else, about Cooper, a man (Matthew McConaughey) trying to save his family – as well as the rest of the world – from starvation and other climate change side effects. To do this, he must work with a crew sent by Michael Caine to colonize a hospitable planet that's beyond the reaches of our galaxy. Unfortunately, hard science kicks in, and Cooper realizes that he's going to be gone for a LONG while, possibly a lifetime.

The new trailer to Interstellar delivers the patented Nolan 1-2 punch of emotional depth and science fiction wonder. The images shown in this trailer promise a heroic expedition of scientific importance, as well as personal stakes. Anne Hathaway and David Oyelowo look to be a couple of crew members who might be having some problems at home themselves, and perhaps see McConaughey's struggle as inspiration to kiss and make up. Wes Bentley looks to be the moral center of the mission, making sure that humanity's best interests are served without forgetting exactly why we're out there in the first place.

Quite simply, the main thrust of Interstellar isn't the fact that we're traveling to space on a wing and a prayer. It's that we're going far beyond the known frontier in the hopes that we can still save our species. This is what science fiction does when it's at its peak, and that's exactly where Christopher Nolan looks like he's at right now.

Interstellar blasts into theaters on November 7th, but this trailer should be attached to Guardians Of The Galaxy this weekend. If it's not attached to your local IMAX theater's trailer reel, I suggest a revolt of civil disobedience. This is the trailer you're going to be talking about on Monday, and it'd be a shame to be left out of seeing this on the biggest screen possible. It looks like I was wrong about the previous trailer after all... this is the trailer of the year.

Watch Vin Diesel Record His One 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Line In Multiple Languages

0
0

When kids (or child-like adults) leave Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend, there is one line they will absolutely explode if they don't quote it over and over and over.

That line is, "I am Groot," and it's the only thing Vin Diesel, as Groot, says in the movie.

You would think the voice work for such a role would be quick and easy, but you would think wrong. This new video shows Vin repeating, ad infinitum into a microphone, "I am Groot" and "Yo soy Groot," often while wearing bouncy stilts.

Why the stilts? So he can better channel a sentient tree, of course.

Meet The Real-Life Raccoon Who Inspired 'Rocket' In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

When "Guardians of the Galaxy" comes to theaters Friday, one of the characters everyone will be talking about is Rocket Raccoon, a gun-toting rascal with a lot of spunk voiced by Bradley Cooper.

But before he was voiced by Cooper, and brought to life with the help of motion capture, animators drew inspiration for the character from a real-life raccoon named Oreo.

Raised since he was two days old by Sallie Rainbow and the people at Oreo and Friendsa UK-based group that describes itself as an animal encounters company that helps raise awareness of exotic animals, the now five-year-old raccoon was invited by director James Gunn to model for Rocket in "Guardians."

Gunn recently spoke with British magazine Small Furry Pets detailing all of the moving parts that went into creating Rocket.

Via ComicBookMovie:

“We needed a raccoon to study how he looked and his behavior, so that our on-screen raccoon, which is generated through CGI will be realistic," said Gunn. "Our Rocket is based on a combination of our voice actor, Bradley Cooper, our on-set actor, my brother Sean Gunn, the movements and behavior and look of Oreo [the raccoon], as well as my own animation.”oreo rocket raccoon guardians of the galaxy

Oreo most recently headed out to the “Guardians of the Galaxy” premiere in London where the mini star lounged in his own hotel suite ...

... before heading out to the red carpet to greet fans ...

... and reunite with Gunn.

Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, And J.J. Abrams Are Saving Kodak Film From Extinction

0

jj abrams x-wing

Digital filmmaking has overtaken analog, but there are some directors who refuse to let film stock die out. And so Hollywood studios are stepping in to lend support to Kodak in its time of crisis.

Following Fujifilm's shutting down its film stock production last year, Kodak is the only company left that still makes the nearly obsolete medium. However, powerful directors like J.J. Abrams, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino and Judd Apatow have joined forces to save Kodak from the brink of extinction. Together--with the help of some unnamed allies--they pushed Hollywood studios to step in and financially support Kodak so that film stock can continue to be made and processed. This will include keeping open Fotokem, the last film processing lab in Hollywood.

THR reports that Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke declared in a statement:

After extensive discussions with filmmakers, leading studios and others who recognize the unique artistic and archival qualities of film, we intend to continue production. Kodak thanks these industry leaders for their support and ingenuity in finding a way to extend the life of film."

Nolan has long been a vocal defender of analog film, and spoke about his and his dedicated director of photography Wally Pfister's passion for shooting on film in the documentary Side by Side. For a pretty comprehensive understanding of how analog film differs from digital film, I recommend watching that doc, as it speaks to a wide array of directors, editors, cinematographers, and colorists. It's now streaming on Netflix.

So the directors behind Star Trek Into Darkness, The Dark Knight, Django Unchained and The 40-Year-Old Virgin have used their considerable Hollywood pull to extend the life of analog film. But it's unknown how long this reprieve will last. Kodak's profits have fallen 96% over the last ten years, and could continue to decline as more and more movie theaters convert to digital projectors to keep up with the times. Despite filing for bankruptcy last fall, Kodak is dedicated to keeping their film stock production going as long as possible. But this may only extend a few more years.

In the meantime, enthusiasts of film will be glad to know that Christopher Nolan's Interstellar was shot on film. Quentin Tarantino is promising The Hateful Eight will be shot in 70mm. And now in-production Star Wars: Episode VII is also shooting on traditional film stock. Could J.J. Abrams' choice for Star Wars' seventh installment suggest that its sequels will follow suit? Only time will tell.

Samuel L. Jackson Had Only One Request For 'The Avengers' — And He Was Denied

Director and writer Joss Whedon radically changed the script for "Marvel's The Avengers" when he took over the project. Many cast members loved his version, in part because he asked for their insight, particularly with their characters.

Samuel L. Jackson, playing spy Nick Fury, was pleased to be involved in the writing process but had one request, as Whedon recalls in "Joss Whedon: The Biography," out Aug. 1:

"I don’t want to run," the then-62-year-old actor said. "Don’t make me run a lot."

After reading the script, however, he confronted the director over a stage direction.

"It says, 'Fury run,'" Jackson said.

"I know, it’s just this one time," Whedon said.

This isn't the first time Jackson has had a request on set of a major motion picture.

While filming "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack Of The Clones," Jackson requested a purple lightsaber for his character Jedi Master Mace Windu so he could find himself in a big action-sequence of around 300 lightsabers.

Jackson recounted that George Lucas originally tried to tell him lightsabers only came in three colors but eventually relented.star wars episode 2 attack of the clones samuel l jackson

There Is Only One End-Credit Scene After 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' — Here's What It Means

0
0

guardians of the galaxy benicio del toroWarning: If you have not seen "Guardians of the Galaxy," there are major spoilers below!

You know the drill by now.

Don't head out as soon as "Guardians of the Galaxy" is over. Stick around after the credits for an extra scene.

Marvel loves adding extra scenes often teasing future movies during and after its end credits.

For the past few movies, Marvel Studios has given viewers two extra scenes to watch. One scene will tease a future film in the larger Marvel universe. The other will expand on a moment from the current film.

If you left the studio early and missed what happened, we have you covered.

Last chance to head back before spoilers!

What happens:the collector guardians of the galaxyThe scene pans down over the wrecked ruins of The Collector's (Benicio del Toro) trophy room after it was destroyed earlier in the film. We see The Collector, a man who collects rare and exotic items across galaxies, beleaguered and injured while sipping a beverage out of a green cup. A dog dressed in an astronaut suit comes up to him and licks his face.

All of a sudden a voice off screen asks, "What do you let him lick you like that for?" The camera then cuts to none other than Howard the Duck, a sci-fi creature from Marvel, who says "Gross" before sipping from his own bright green cup.

After the scene the words, "Howard the Duck created by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik" appear.howard the duck guardians of the galaxy

If this scene sounds familiar, it's because it leaked online earlier this week ahead of the film's release before quickly being pulled down.

Fans have been freaking out trying to uncover where the duck appears in the film after the fowl's name was spotted in the credits by site Stitch Kingdom.

It's not the only time we see Howard in "Guardians." Director James Gunn recently told /Film you can catch a glimpse of the fair-feathered friend when The Collector first appears on screen.

Upon a second watch, we did spot Howard near the upper right hand corner of the screen in his own tiny cell when Del Toro first turns to face the audience in the film.

Who's Howard the Duck and why is he in "Guardians of the Galaxy"?

As we mentioned, Howard was a Marvel comic character first introduced in 1973, so he's fair game for Disney to use in one of its movies since acquiring Marvel for $4 billion in 2009.

In 1986, Howard was the focus of a live-action Universal movie, "Howard the Duck," produced by George Lucas — yes, that George Lucas. This is how most audiences are familiar with the character.howard the duck 1986 movie

However, it's really interesting that he appeared in "Guardians" if you know anything about the character's history with Disney.

Shortly after his creation in '73, Disney threatened Marvel with legal action claiming Howard the Duck's satirical design bore a striking resemblance to Donald Duck.howard the duck comics

According to an archived Silver Bullet Comics interview — now known as Comics Bulletin — with Howard the Duck co-creator Stever Gerber, Marvel came to a bizarre deal with Disney that virtually allowed the Mouse House to redesign the character.

"To avoid litigation, Marvel's old management signed an incredibly stupid agreement with Disney. Under its terms, all future appearances of Howard must conform to a set of designs that Disney provided for the character. You've seen this design. It's the one from the black-and-white HTD magazine, with the ghastly swollen beak, the beady eyes, and the baggy trousers that make the duck look like a derelict. What's absolutely astonishing, though, is that the Disney agreement is worded in such a way that Marvel isn't even permitted to create a new, alternative design for the character, even if that design bears no resemblance to Donald."

Here's how Howard looked after the redesign in the comics. howard the duck

You can take a look at the sheet calling for redesigns to Howard, here.

It's worth noting the version of the character in "Guardians" appeared more like his original self, and without pants.

Here's How Chris Pratt Got Ripped For Marvel's 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

Actor Chris Pratt shows off a slimmed down, buff body in "Guardians of the Galaxy," which opened Friday.

But it's been a long road to losing 60 pounds in six months.

Last July, Pratt posted a photo to his Instagram account showing off his dramatic weight loss and newfound six-pack.

How did he do it? "Six months no beer. #GOTG Kinda douchey to post this but my brother made me," Pratt wrote alongside the below photo.

In reality, the process of losing pounds was a bit tougher.

"Three or four hours a day of just consistent, ass-kicking hard work," the 35-year-old actor told Men's Fitness.

Pratt's workouts included P90X , running, swimming, boxing, and kickboxing, and he even completed a triathlon.

With the help of a personal trainer and nutritionist, the actor increased his caloric intake to 4,000 calories a day and drank tons of water. "I was peeing all day long, every day. That part was a nightmare," Pratt told the magazine.

But the actor was happy to learn he could still eat on the intense weight-loss program.

"I actually lost weight by eating more food, but eating the right food, eating healthy foods, and so when I was done with the movie my body hadn't been in starvation mode," Pratt told People magazine. "It wasn't like I was triggered to just gorge myself and get really fat again."

Now, he says: "It's something that I think I can maintain because I don't spend four hours in the gym each day. I do maybe one hour in the gym maybe four days a week, and that's it."

Pratt joked to Vulture of his weight loss and gain for roles: "I just like to gain weight and lose weight. It’s a rollercoaster. I just want to do this. I want to touch God."

Before beefing up, Pratt was most well known for playing the bumbling Andy on NBC's "Parks and Recreation."chris pratt parks and rec

Pratt says he packed on 60 pounds for his role as a lawyer in 2013's "Delivery Man," in which he costarred alongside Vince Vaughn.

"The first 20 pounds was sympathy weight because my wife was pregnant," Pratt told SheKnows. "I was gaining weight as she was gaining weight ... The other 35 pounds I did just by declaring that I was going to do it. And then my rule of thumb became: 'If it's there, eat it.' And then I would order two entrees at every meal. I would always have dessert, and I would drink the darkest beer on the menu."

To play a Navy Seal, Pratt told People he "was doing 500 push-ups a day, working out at the gym, running five miles a day, but with no food, and I tore my body apart ... I felt terrible afterwards, had to get shoulder surgery, and I wore myself down doing that because I didn't have the proper coaching."

At the film's premiere months later, Pratt told E! Online: "I was about 50 pounds or 40 pounds lighter than I am now. I worked out really hard and I cut out everything bad for me for a long time and I just focused on trying to become a believable Navy SEAL."

It Took 3 Hours To Do Zoe Saldana's Makeup Every Day For 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is out this weekend and is expected to be a huge hit.

A big part of the $170 million sci-fi film is the extensive makeup process actors underwent to transform into a colorful cast of aliens spanning different galaxies.

According to Disney and Marvel Studios, a team of 50 special-effects makeup artists were on hand to do prosthetics for 22 cast members and dozens of supporting cast during filming.

We asked the film's special makeup-effects designer, David White, to take us through the process of transforming some of the movie's actors into their roles. Over the next few days, we'll reveal what went into creating some of the different looks in "Guardians of the Galaxy."

White tells Business Insider by email it took roughly two to three hours daily to prep Zoe Saldana for her role as a deadly, green assassin, Gamora.

Compared to some of the other actors, White says Saldana's character required minimal prosthetics with small enhancements to the cheeks and forehead, which you'll notice as lines drawn into the skin.

"Templates were offered up to Zoe’s face and an outline of Mac ivory base was drawn around the outline with a fine brush. The forehead pieces were then applied using medical adhesive pros-aide.

Then the cheeks and the skin around the prosthetics were brush painted with a MAC yellow primer and INKZ primer and, when dry, a green MAC base was applied. Beyond this base coverage three more layers of variable green tones are air brushed on, including an AQUA mix highlight and eye shadow mix."

According to White, it took a while to perfect Gamora's green alien skin color. In addition, the actress' eyebrows were replaced with a "sculpted little slick eyebrow shape."

Here's Why 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Is The Best 3D Marvel Movie Yet

0
0

rocket raccoon guardians of the galaxy

While every Marvel Studios film has been released in 3D since Kenneth Branagh’s Thor back in 2011, the reality that it’s probably the weakest area of the company’s track record. None of the movies have ever been filmed in native stereoscope, and even though post-conversion has improved greatly over the last few years, Marvel’s features have never really looked that great with an added dimension. But that’s not stopping them from trying.

Enter James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The 10th film from Marvel Studios is heading into theaters this weekend, and will be doing so both in 3D and 2D formats. Rather than making you guys gamble on spending an extra $5 for a pair of glasses with your movie ticket, however, we have once again applied our patented "To 3D or Not To 3D" breakdown system to help you determine the best way to see the movie. How did it do within our criteria? Read on to find out!

FIT SCORE

Now that we are more than four years removed from James Cameron’s Avatar, I don’t think I have to fully explain why 3D and science-fiction action films work so well together. Expansive worlds, highly-choreographed fight sequences, and lots of CGI are all really good friends of the extra dimension, and Guardians of the Galaxy has all three in spades. On the list of movies that should be in 3D, "epic summer spectacles" will always be on the list, so James Gunn’s blockbuster gets an easy 5/5 for this one.

PLANNING & EFFORT SCORE

As alluded to earlier, Guardians of the Galaxy was not filmed in native 3D – but that doesn’t mean that the movie wasn’t planned from its inception as a 3D movie. James Gunn has revealed that he oversaw the conversion of every shot during post-production on the blockbuster – insuring that every scene works without being "silly, distracting, or overly showy"– and the film even has some extra immersion available in the IMAX 3D format thanks to shifting aspect ratios for particular sequences. Just because Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t actually filmed in 3D doesn’t mean that it wasn’t always going to be released on the format, and the filmmakers behind the movie did their part to prepare.

BEFORE THE WINDOW SCORE

"Before The Window," a.k.a. when stuff comes out of the screen at the audience, is largely considered the more gimmicky side of 3D, but many – including myself – see it as the really being the fun aspect of the format. Given how dedicated Guardians of the Galaxy is to just being so damn entertaining, I was hoping for a bit more in the movie to fly off the screen, but I didn’t walk away wholly disappointed. From Groot’s glowing spores to a patch of grass and dirt that Rocket starts kicking towards the audience, the Marvel film does extend itself towards its audience occasionally, and it’s great when it does.
drax the destroyer guardians of the galaxy

BEYOND THE WINDOW SCORE

Looking at the opposite of "Before The Window," our "Beyond The Window" category is dedicated to the sense of depth that the movie delivers – and it’s where Guardians of the Galaxy shines brightest. Particularly when viewed in IMAX, the film’s beautiful, thrilling action sequences really pull the audience into the movie, as the 3D helps the audience feel like it’s really looking deeply into a world far beyond our own. Even more impressively, however, is the depth featured in the more intimate scenes, like when the titular group of anti-heroes has gathered in the belly of a ship to discuss plans to take down the bad guys. It’s in this category in particular that Guardians shines brighter than any previous Marvel 3D film.

BRIGHTNESS SCORE

Being someone who wears prescription lenses makes me predisposed towards hating 3D glasses, but I royally rage against them when they do their part to hamper the brightness of a film. Fortunately, I was able to stay happy and relaxed during my two hours-plus watching Guardians of the Galaxy. It certainly helps that the movie is a vivid, flashy blockbuster with plenty of color and well-lit action sequences, but the filmmakers also do a good job not letting the darker scenes become muddy. This category is admittedly a bit subjective, as there are plenty of projectionists around the world who have absolutely no idea what they’re doing, but I personally had a fantastic experience at my screening.

GLASSES OFF SCORE

Want to know a really simple test you can perform in-theatre to see if you’re getting the proper 3D bang for your buck? Just take off your glasses while the movie is running. The extra-dimensional effect is created because two separate images are being combined though the specialty lenses, and removing the lenses reveals the way that the 3D has been layered on the screen to create a sense of depth. While watching Guardians of the Galaxy, I removed my glasses periodically and was rather impressed with the results. With some exception, nearly every scene was so densely layered that it was actually hard to watch – which is, weirdly, a great thing.

guardians of the galaxy orbAUDIENCE HEALTH SCORE

If a director or stereoscopic artists fail to establish places for your eyes to focus during a 3D movie, an extremely negative reaction can be actual physical illness (usually represented in nausea or intense headaches). As someone who has seriously felt these effects before, I am happy to report that Guardians of the Galaxy is entirely sickness-free. Even with so much going on in certain sequences, your eyes never get lost in the screen, and I felt 100% for my entire experience watching the film.

FINAL VERDICT

I can say without any hesitation that Guardians of the Galaxy is the best 3D we’ve seen featured in a Marvel Studios movie yet – and while I understand that’s not a super high bar, that shouldn’t undercut just how impressive it is. In addition to being simply visually spectacular, the extra dimension really does a great job of bringing the audience further into its world, and really enhances the experience. I will also add that if you have the chance to see it in IMAX, you absolutely should.

'Thor 3: Ragnarok' And 'The Avengers Civil War': The Future Of Marvel Leaked?

Ever since Comic Con 2014 came and went, a strange image has been seen floating around the internet. Judging from the looks of it, we may have our very first look at what Marvel has stored for us in the next 5 years.

The photo in question can be seen below:

marvel

Now TAKE EVERYTHING HERE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. The dates and movies in this photo have not been confirmed as either legitimate, or as false. However, last year Marvel announced their Phase 2 movies in a very similar fashion with all of their movies with dates under the logo, and quite a few of the movies and dates in this are legitimate so hey, you never know. This photo appeared on 9GAG and made its way across the internet like a wildfire. Let's break this poster down movie by movie.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

avengers age of ultron captain america thorThis film is coming out on May 1st, 2015. Everything here checks out. No need to look in to this title any further.

Ant-Man (2015)

ant man concept posterAs we learned from Comic Con this year, Ant-Man is still happening, and will still star Paul Rudd and Micheal Douglas. The footage we got this year was... interesting, to say the very least. ("Superheroes... what a goddamned joke."). So far, nothing has been said about a change in release date, so as far as we know, Ant-Man will still hit theaters a mere 2 months after Avengers: Age of Ultron. So far, all of the information on this photo is legitimate.

Captain America: The Fallen Son (2016)

chris evans captain america 2Here's where things get a bit more complex. We know that Captain America 3 (or if this photo is legitimate, "Captain America: The Fallen Son) will open on the same weekend as Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. We even have Directors set to helm the project. So at least the release date is legitimate. Now, let's break this down.

The title gives one the impression that this film will pick up about where the The Winter Soldier left off, where Cap and Falcon are off to find Bucky Barnes AKA The Winter Soldier, who has just been freed from Hydra control, and is not journeying to find out who he is, and why this guy keeps calling him "Bucky", hence the "Fallen Son" in the title. Given the ending of Captain America: The Winter Soldier,it would seem only natural this this storyline is the next chapter in Steve's story. I think it is safe to say, that this movie, is legitimate.

Doctor Strange

Doctor StrangeThis is another one that Marvel Studios has already confirmed and has a Director tied to. For those who don't know about the "Sorcerer Supreme", Doctor Stephen Strange was a brilliant but arrogant Neurosurgeon living in NYC. His life changed forever when an accident severely damaged his hands to the point where they would uncontrollably shake, leaving him out of a job as a surgeon.

With nowhere else to go, Stephen rushed to find treatment for his hands, his search led him to an ancient monastery where Stephen would become versed in the Mystical Arts, and learn to wield magic to protect our world from the evil forces of the inter-dimensional demon known as Dormammu and Dormammu's student, Baron Mordo, as the World's Sorcerer Supreme! Now as I have stated before, this film has been confirmed and a director has already been signed on, so this being on the photo only boosts the credibility.

Thor 3: Ragnarok

anthony hopkins thor the dark worldThe third installment in a series that managed to make a ton of girls "geeks" overnight. When we last left Thor, our hero decided to leave Asgard to protect Midgard and be with Jane Foster, his one true love. Leaving a very sneaky Loki to take the throne. We still have the events of "Age of Ultron" to see, however, it doesn't seem impossible for Thor to feel the need to return to Asgard after the end of AOU, especially if he were to catch some sort of message from someone in Asgard that Loki has taken the throne. Now, Ragnarok has dual meaning in the Marvel Comics. On one hand, you have the saga, Ragnarok. Which was the Asgardian Apocalypse, the end of their world.

If the MCU decided to go this route, Loki would probably have some sort of hand in starting the Asgardian end of days, and Thor would have to not only fight his Brother, but would also have to save his entire world from destruction. A story worthy of a movie in its own right. On the other hand, however, you have Ragnarok. A cyborg clone or Thor himself created by Tony Stark combining his own DNA with Asgardian DNA to replace Thor with the REAL Son of Odin was MIA. Now, this story in itself would be really interesting. Who's to say that before learning his mistake with Ultron, Tony didn't make a clone of Thor? Who's to say Thor doesn't die in AOU and in Thor's absence, Tony deployed the clone?

Thor has died and come back again many times in the comics, so to see a movie where Thor must face off against a version of HIMSELF, while also going through the trials that a required for coming back from Asgardian death would be amazing! Unfortunately, we only have the success of Thor: The Dark World and Chris' remaining movie(s) in his Contract to hold as evidence of this movie's legitimacy. But here's to hoping that Thor 3 is true!

Guardians of the Galaxy: War of Kings

guardians of the galaxy gamora star lordAt San Diego Comic Con 2014, Marvel Studios confirmed a sequel to the then unreleased "Guardians of the Galaxy", they even provided a release date of, wouldn't you know it, July 28th, 2017. Just. Like. In. This. Picture. James Gunn is also set to direct again, meaning that this movie is real, however the Title may not be, just like Captain America. If this is the title of the sequel, we may very well be able to see more of this Galaxy that Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket protect. For those who don't know the comic book characters, a minor spoiler is ahead

In the Marvel Comics, Peter Quill/Star-Lord isn't fully human. He is actually half Spartoi, a race of aliens nearly identical to humans, for the exception that they live to about 300 years old. He received his Element Guns from his father, J'son of Spartax, the Emperor of the planet Spartex (You ever wonder why his middle name is Jason?) who had left them on Earth, while he was repairing his ship and falling in love with Star-Lord's mom.

Given that information, it is VERY likely that Star-Lord's heritage comes in to play, and drags the Guardians into an Intergalactic War. It is also rumored that Nova (whether we will see the Richard Ryder or the Sam Alexander version of the character is yet unknown), and Adam Warlock, a being of nearly infinite power who just so happens to have an Infinity Stone in his head, will also appear in this sequel.

For those of you who had no idea why the camera took so long on this shot at the end of Thor: The Dark World, this is Adam Warlock's cocoon. This pretty much says "Yeah, Adam Warlock exists. He's not showing up yet, but he exists."

In conclusion, a Guardian's sequel is coming, it has a date and a director, so at the very least, a sequel is confirmed. However, take it all with a grain of salt, because at the time of writing this article, GotG has not yet been publicly released.

Black Panther

Black Panther, MarvelThis is a project that fans have been DYING for ever since the scene in Iron Man 2 where we saw that there were more heroes around the world, and saw a blip on Africa. For those who have never heard of this superhero, Black Panther is basically Batman, except better.

Sorry, Caped Crusader.

Why is he better? Well, T'Challa, AKA, Black Panther, is the ruler of his own country called Wakanda. Wakanda is, in the Marvel Universe, the leading producer of to Vibranium. His back story is just as dark as Batman's, in the fact that he watched his father be ruthlessly murdered by a Scientist named Claw. After his father's death, T'Challa became the ruler of the country. However, a country was not the only thing T'Challa inherited. T'Challa was also given the Black Panther spirit, granting him fantastical abilities such as Olympic level physical attributes, like Strength, Speed, Stamina and such, as well as heightening all of his other senses as well, scent, sight, and such like. He also has a Ph.D in Physics, and his armor is made entirely out of Vibranium, meaning it is as indestructible as Cap's shield. He also has a connection to one of the gods of his tribe. In addition to all of this, did I mention that he was the world's first Black superhero?

This movie is interesting because the evidence we have for it is actually rather scattered. We have words form Kevin Fiege that he plans and wants to make a Black Panther movie, however we also have another piece of evidence. This piece, however, is a bit more clever and really "blink-and-you-miss-it" as opposed to some other evidence.

"Booking a flight to Wakanda." I shouldn't have to say anymore, but I will. If this guy isn't pulling our legs, then his tweets were a very clever way of telling the world that he, Mr. John Boyega is to be our T'Challa, son of T'Chaka, King of Wakanda.

I personally think he'll be a good fit, but then again, he could be lying to us. We just don't know at this point. Only time can, and will tell.

Avengers: Civil War

avengers age of ultron hanging out partyOkay, now this title is VERY interesting.

For those of you who don't know. Marvel's Civil War storyline was exactly as it sounded, a war between the Marvel heroes. Basically, what happens is that SHIELD and the US Government begins to push the Superhuman Registration Act, which was a law that required anyone with superhuman abilities to file with the United States and allow themselves be be branded as separate from the rest of the population because of it. Naturally, not everyone was a huge fan. In the end, pretty much every superhero was in a Pro-Registration, or Ant-Registration camp, each of them being led by Tony Stark and Captain America respectively. Seeing a movie where the ENTIRE Marvel Cinematic Universe is against each other would be insane, seeing who sides with who, and the fights that would result because of it... OH! it just gives me the chills.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence other than the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is signed on to do a 3rd Avengers movie, that this would be the plot. The plot of the next movie could very well be the fight between our Beloved Avengers and the Mad Titan Thanos we've been waiting for. At this point, however, all we can do is speculate.

World War Hulk

Hulk roarRumor upon rumor upon rumor has been spread about this storyline coming into being in the MCU, however, time and time again we have been told "No, it's not happening!" by Marvel big wigs. Could this photo be evidence that Marvel was throwing us off? For those who don't know about the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk storylines, allow me to give you a run-down.

It all started when a group of the most powerful superheros decided that while Bruce Banner was a stand-up guy, the Hulk was far too dangerous to keep on Earth. So they sedated him, and launched him into deep space, to a peaceful and serene planet that was uninhabited by any other life, thus granting Banner's wish of being left alone. However, the ship's course was altered and ended up crashing onto the planet Sakaar. The Hulk was captured and then subjected to fight in Gladiator style games against other creatures that were captured by the forces on Sakaar. Hulk fought many people, including the Silver Surfer, but eventually broke free from his captivity and ended up fulfilling a prophesy about the "Sakaar Son". Hulk. embracing this title, became the ruler of that world.

He went on to have a son named Skaar, and made his way back to Earth, having vowed revenge against the heroes that sent him away. When he got back to Earth, he and a few of his companions from Sakaar, went on a rampage, defeating some of the Earth's greatest heroes, and forcing them to fight in a Gladiator style arena.

Now, in order for this to work, this would have to be a REALLY long movie, covering all of the above, or the movie would be about something totally different, perhaps introducing the Red Hulk or She-Hulk, maybe even Doc Samson? Anyways, Marvel has said in the past that while a solo Hulk film based on the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk storylines was something they weren't opposed to doing. If this does happen, I would be very anxious to see how they played it out. Unfortunately, this is one of the only 3 projects on this list that hasn't got any real evidence towards it's validity... except the following rumor. NOTE: SPOILERS AHEAD!

Rumor has it that the 3rd act of Avengers: Age of Ultron, will feature the Hulk trapped on a spaceship that has a course set for deep space. Meaning that he very well could be headed for Sakaar.

Even still, while a movie based on these events would be flippin' sweet, I myself have my doubts about the dates, or even this movie. However, I've been wrong in the past, and in the case of this movie, I wouldn't mind being wrong again!

The In humans

avengers age of ultron quicksilver scarlet witchOut of all the titles on this list, this is the title that comes most out of left field. The Inhumans are not just a comic book series, or a team of superheroes. No, the Inhumans are an entire society of super powered people. Prehistoric Humans who were exposed to a mysterious substance called the Terrigen Mists

The main cast of the Inhumans consists of the Royal Family of their city. The King, Black Bolt, a hero so powerful that him merely whispering is enough to level entire cities, he gives a new meaning to "Strong but Silent types". Alongside him is Medusa, a woman who's hair can be manipulated to act as whips and such. She and her cousin Black Bolt have an interesting relationship with each other. They basically fall in love and get engaged, but considering the fact that their society is all based on Royal Bloodlines, it doesn't seem weird that the family would... you know what, lets just stop that train of thought there. Less creepy Fun Fact: There was a point in the comics where Venom had succeeded in killing Spiderman, and Medusa, with her strong sense of Justice, doled out the maximum punishment she could, 50 lashings from her superpowered hair. It was strong enough to act like a regular whip, breaking the sound barrier every time, causing Venom even more pain due to the symbiote's vulnerability to sound. However, I digress.

Some of the other members were Karnak, one with the ability to actually sense a weak point in an opponent's weak points, and a martial arts master, Gorgon, one with Super Strength and the ability to create seismic waves, Triton, who could breathe underwater, Crystal, a woman who could manipulate the four elements and the younger sister of Medusa. Fun Fact: Crystal eventually meets Quicksilver, the two fall in love and get married, they even have a child together, and Quicksilver is even accepted into the In human's society as a full member, which was a really big deal. However, what family would be complete without a pet? Most families have a dog... and so does this one. Lockjaw, the family dog, also has powers too, that's right. Their dog, aside from being gigantic, can teleport, and has super strength. Lockjaw also fights alongside the Pet Avengers. How cool is that?

Not much has been said about this movie, or group of heroes before, more than the internet speculation that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would be members of the Inhuman society. An Inhumans movie would probably be about Black Bolt and the rest of the family fighting Maximus the Mad, Black Bolts brother who wants the family throne and Medusa to himself, maybe featuring a subplot about Quicksilver and Crystal's romance. Who knows. This is really the only movie with absolutely NO preface, not hints, no official dates released by Marvel, no directors no anything. Which makes it hard to believe in it. However, everyone had the same reaction with Guardians of the Galaxy, and now it's one of the most anticipated movies of the year, so in the end, only time can tell if this one is happening.

In conclusion, everything in this article MUST be taken with a grain of salt. However, if this leak is legitimate, and this is the Phase 3 and beyond lineup, we're all in for a real treat!

Here's The Next Big Marvel Villain That Gets Teased In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

0
0

guardians of the galaxyWarning: There are spoilers ahead.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is in theaters this weekend.

The film is a lot of fun and should have a huge opening weekend for Disney and Marvel. It's currently aiming to make north of $70 million, according to BoxOffice.com.

While there are many action and fight sequences in the film, the one moment that had fanboys on the edge of their seats was the slow reveal of a huge villain in the Marvel universe named Thanos, played by Josh Brolin.

It's a very rewarding scene if you've been paying close attention to the many end-credits sequences Marvel places in its movies. Thano's appearance has been two years in the making since the character was first teased in an end-credits sequence of 2012's "The Avengers."

If you're not familiar with the character, Thanos is one of the most important characters you'll want to familiarize yourself with as the Marvel universe continues to expand.

Who is Thanos?thanos the avengers 2012

Think of any of the villains you know in a superhero film and multiply that number exponentially. That may start to come close to describing Thanos who is often considered one of the biggest Marvel villains ever created.

Thanos is a Titan born with a deformity which caused him to have an oversized body. He's obsessed with three things: killing, death, and power.

The guy's literally insane (one of his aliases is the Mad Titan). He was responsible for the near destruction of his own home planet and his people.

You thought Loki was bad for wanting to rule Earth and Asgard? Thanos makes the God of Mischief look like a saint.

So what kind of powers does he have?

It may be more appropriate to ask what powers Thanos doesn't have. Thanos is intelligent, has some telepathic abilities including the ability to teleport himself. The guy is virtually unstoppable.

He was cursed by death to be immortal. In other words, he can't die.

Oh, and don't let his size fool you, he's extremely fast.

His importance in future Marvel films:

If you've been following along with all of the end-credits, Marvel has slowly been teasing Thano's grand entrance on screen.

In the comics, the Mad Titan is widely known for his appearance in "The Infinity Gauntlet" storyline where his main objective is to collect six power gemstones known as Infinity Stones to make him all powerful.the infinity gauntlet

We've talked about it a bit before here, but Marvel has slowly been revealing some of the different stones on screen. So far, we've seen three. Loki's Chitauri scepter holds one of the stones while another was recently seen in "Thor: The Dark World" as the object villain Malekith wanted to obtain to make the world dark.

loki sceptre the avengers

Expect to hear more of Thanos' name in the future.

This is a storyline Marvel has been building toward which many believe will finally culminate in "The Avengers 3" possibly merging the "Guardians of the Galaxy" with the "Avengers."

Woody Allen Responds To Accusations That He Won't Cast Black Actors

Woody Allen

Of the many criticisms that have plagued Woody Allen throughout his illustrious career, one is quantifiable: He has rarely cast actors of color in his films, despite having released a movie every year since 1977.

In April, the New York Daily News fanned the flames of that long-simmering criticism by reporting that the Oscar-winner actively did not want to cast any black actors in the Zach Braff-starring musical adaptation of “Bullets Over Broadway,” despite the fact that it takes place in Harlem's Cotton Club.

In a new interview in the New York Observer, Allen shot down the accusations of racial bias — but didn't exactly promise to fill his next films with a diverse group of performers.

“Not unless I write a story that requires it,” said Allen whose new movie, “Magic in the Moonlight,” is out in theaters. “You don't hire people based on race. You hire people based on who is correct for the part. The implication is that I'm deliberately not hiring black actors, which is stupid. I cast only what's right for the part. Race, friendship means nothing to me except who is right for the part.”

He is, however, friendly with several black celebrities, including Chris Rock, who bought him a wedding present. He also considers himself a pal of Spike Lee, who has criticized Allen in the past.

“I'm friendly with Spike Lee. We don't socialize, but I don't socialize with anyone,” he added. “I don't have white friends either.”

How The ‘Boyhood’ Editor Stitched 12 Years Of Footage Into One Of The Year's Best Movies

0
0

Boyhood Sundance

Now that the mysterious, so-called “12 Year Project” has hit theaters under the name “Boyhood,” Richard Linklater is very deservedly receiving all the plaudits in the world for successfully shepherding such a daunting, ambitious and ultimately touching project to fruition. After all, he had to cast, finance, write and direct the years-long tale of a young Texan millennial — all while keeping all participants engaged and involved, which may have been the hardest part of all.

It was, indeed, an amazing accomplishment — but it may not have been possible without a trusted editor to make sense of all those years of footage, to turn it into something watchable, let alone reflective of life's journey. Luckily, he had indie editor extraordinaire Sandra Adair on his side.

Adair, a New Mexico native, has worked with Linklater since his second film, 1993's “Dazed and Confused,” editing just about every one of his subsequent pictures. That gave her a decade of experience with Linklater before “Boyhood” ever shot a single frame, creating an understanding and trust between the two that became essential over such a long-term, risky project.

She also got to witness the growth of star Ellar Coltrane in much the way theatergoers did, giving her a unique perspective in the editing room each year.

“It was a surprise to me every year when I would come to the new material and go, ‘Oh my gosh, look how much he has changed this year’ or ‘Look how much mom has changed or dad,'” she told TheWrap, laughing. “It was always kind of a surprise to me to see what was going to happen next.”

Warning: The following conversation has a few spoilers.

TheWrap: Did the story ever need to be changed, or did it build on itself every year?

Adair: Both. For the first couple of years, we really did not make any major changes, and then we compiled a list of notes of things that we thought we would want to go back and revisit. Then when we started to get into it a little bit, probably four or five years, we started to compile one year after the other. I'd edit that year and then I would attach it to the tail of the previous years. We did start going back and making a few extractions.

Also read: ‘Boyhood’ Review: In Richard Linklater's Intimate Epic, Time Keeps on Slippin’ Into the Future (Video)

In the last year, I did spend some time going back and really shaving and revisiting the material, making sure I had the best material from each moment in the movie. Early on we just kind of took our time. I didn't feel like we had pressure to make hard decisions too early. We wanted to wait. What we didn't want to do was remove material or be hasty about taking things out until we understood how those moments were going to resonate once we got the entire film put together. We kept a running list of notes and then it did become easier to say “OK, we have to make that smaller.”

Did you leave a lot of leeway for story development earlier on? The scene early in the mother's marriage to the college professor, he yells at his son for playing a game at the table, and that foreshadows what happens down the line… Could it have gone differently?

Adair: The genius of Richard is that he knew who his character was going to be in the following years. He may not have known the specific scenes, … but he did know that the stepfather's character was going to develop into ultimately the type of person he was going to be. He is still in the honeymoon stage at that dinner.

They had just come back from their honeymoon so of course everything is hunky-dory in the relationship, and it appears that it's going to be very rosy. But his character is who he is. He is a bad, flawed person. Those little tiny indicators of who these people are about to become, that's just Richard Linklater. He has a very firm understanding of where he is going even though he may not have the specifics.

Ethan Hawke BoyhoodWas there ever a point when you wanted to change a character's story? You can't really do reshoots for this movie, especially down the line.

Adair: No you can't. We did one pick up shot. We did a few little pick up shots but they didn't involve people, they were just insert shots. We did do ADR along the way because we knew the kids’ voices would change. If we had some audio issues or little lines that we needed to get, we got them within the year that we needed them, from the kids at least. There were no problems really that we had to go back and try to solve. There were no characters that were entirely lost or anything like that.

Was there a temptation at any moment to make a six-hour version of this?

Adair: I mean the goal was to have 10 or 15 minutes per year. That's 120-180 minutes, so that's up to three hours. Obviously we went over [the lower estimate]. Pretty early on we realized that some years may run over but it was never really a big concern. We just wanted to make the best film that we could.

The transition from year to year was seamless, just a fade to black and then the next segment. Why was that the decision that was made?

Adair: That was by design. Rick and I, he was certain that he didn't want to have clear delineations between the years. The idea of having seamless transitions was completely purposeful and the idea was to have those delineations of time wash by, much like a memory would, and then you realize a few moments later: something's different, something's changed but I'm not exactly sure what, and you realize, his hair is different, his voice has changed, there are new people in their lives. We tried to make those transitions as smooth and invisible as possible.

Were there ever any technological problems over the years, in transitioning to new cameras or programs?

Adair: In terms of the editing? No, we tried to keep it as consistent as possible. They shot on 35 mm, even though that was old technology by the time we got to years 2008-12. We to be consistent as possible … we didn't want to treat each year differently, we just wanted to be able to do the whole film as consistently as possible, and when we get to the end, troubleshoot and figure out what we had to do to bring it up to the place where we could get it out of the Avid and scan it.

Ethan Hawke BoyhoodI read that there's going to be a Criterion Collection edition. What stuff are you excited for people to see that they haven't seen yet?

Adair: I think there's a lot of behind-the-scenes footage that was shot throughout the whole process that will be on the Criterion DVD, and probably some of the lifted scenes or partial scenes that ended up not being in the movie. I haven't had that conversation with Rick, so I don't know specifically what he's thinking, but I'm sure it'll be very interesting and very rich.

The scene that killed me the most was Patricia's last scene where she's crying saying “I thought there would be something more,” that was like a stab in the heart. Was that always the plan, to have that be her last scene? Or was there something else that you cut because you knew that that was such a good ending for her?

Adair: No, there was nothing else planned. That was a real moment that happened; that was the evolution of her character, and I think it came to Patricia and Rick in a very honest and real way, and it was incorporated into the movie. I think it rings true so much for mothers and children. It's such a universal emotion, and Patricia did such an amazing job. And no, we did not cut anything from that. That's the full scene.

My friend was joking to me that he heard a rumor there's so much extra footage of Lorelai, you could make “Girlhood.” There's so much of her, especially in the beginning, so I imagine that almost could be a possibility, though of course it was a joke.

Adair: I think that most of Lorelai's footage is in the movie, and pretty much intact. There's not much that I can think of offhand that remains unseen in terms of her character and her story. I mean, she did an amazing job. She's hilarious. Rick said she sort of cast herself.

What's New On Netflix Streaming In August

0

rockyiv

It's a new month, and as is the usual practice, Netflix adds a ton of new titles on the 1st. Sadly, that also means 71 titles will disappear.

But don't despair. There are plenty of titles here to get excited about. If you're in the mood for a marathon, the bulk of the "Rocky" films, one through five, have been added. Also worth noting on the list is "Rounders," an awesome film about no-limit poker players, and 1979's "Mad Max," a film which propelled Mel Gibson to international stardom (and spawned two sequels, with another soon on the way).

As far as television shows, if you didn't catch it when it first aired, Netflix adds Neil deGrasse Tyson's mindblowing reboot of the Carl Sagan classic "Cosmos" in August. You can find the new series in its entirety added on the 7th.

Here's the full list of what you'll see in August:

Dwayne Johnson, The ESPYS

During his wrestling days, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was known as the "People's Champion."

But thanks to franchises like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "Fast and the Furious," Johnson is now better known as Hollywood's box office champion.

In total, his movies have made $4.3 billion worldwide, which helped make him Forbes' top-grossing actor of 2013. This year, he ranked No.2 after pulling in a whopping $52 million.

This weekend, he appeared in Brett Ratner's "Hercules," which beat tracking estimates to bring in $29 million opening weekend.

Here's how Dwayne Johnson went from WWE wrestler to one of the top-grossing stars in the film industry.

Before he was "The Rock," Dwayne Johnson was born May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California.

Wrestling is in Johnson's blood. His father, Rocky "Soul Man" Johnson, was a member of the first African American tag-team champions and his grandfather, Peter Maivia, was of the first Samoan wrestlers.

But Johnson's first sport was football. After being a high school star, he joined college football team, the Miami Hurricanes. Over his tenure at the school, Johnson only started once but appeared in 39 games, had 77 tackles, and was a part of the 1991 national championship team.

The Most Complex Makeup In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Took More Than 4 Hours And A Shaved Head

A team of 50 special effects make-up artists made stars from Zoe Saldana to wrestler David Bautista nearly unrecognizable.

However, special effects makeup artist David White tells Business Insider actress Karen Gillan's prosthetic makeup was the “most complex and interesting" to apply.

In the film, Gillan plays blue villain and assassin Nebula who is at odds with the Guardians throughout the movie.

White says it took approximately four hours and 15 minutes to apply her make-up and another 30 minutes to remove.

“The five-piece prosthetic was a puzzle of butt joins and blend offs all on the same pieces and the density of the prosthetic changes to accommodate the need to control the amount of prosthetic movement from one piece to another," White tells us.

White says Gillan’s character also required 22 millimeter contact lenses.

Gillan probably underwent one of the biggest transformations for the film. Last year, the “Doctor Who” actress, known for her long red hair, shocked fans when she shaved her head for the role. Gillan debuted the look at San Diego Comic-Con last year by pulling off a wig during the Marvel panel.guardians of the galaxy marvel karen gillan comic-conHere's Gillan's complete transformation:
