Chris Hemsworth ThorChris Hemsworth is probably used to getting into life-threatening situations in his movies, but it seems danger came a little too close for comfort while filming his latest movie, In the Heart of the Sea.

The production of the movie was hit by a large typhoon which subsequently triggered a massive landslide in the Canary Islands. The cast and crew were able to escape unhurt, however, the landslide tragically killed five locals.

Director Ron Howard tweeted the following statement about the incident:

Rare heavy rain in La Gomera forced us to our small converted cover stage… Then our access road began to flood… Soon we were advised to wrap and evacuate. Pronto. Asap

This isn’t the first near tragedy to hit the production. Last month Hemsworth and his pregnant wife Elsa Pataky were shipwrecked when their ship ran aground.

Luckily the family and all of the other passengers were rescued by the coastguard.

In The Heart of the Sea tells the story of the Essex, a whaling ship which was struck by a giant sperm whale and left adrift in 1820  an event which inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Left at sea with only limited supplies, the crew are forced to turn to cannibalism to survive.

With this in mind, Hemsworth’s situation could have been much worse…
