"2016: Obama's America" has become the fifth highest-grossing political documentary of all time and the most lucrative documentary of the year.

Many factors, such as the nationwide expansion from 169 to 1,091 screens, and the film's release matched with the Republican National Convention, have helped the film to become so successful

The documentary is based on Dinesh D'Souza's book "The Roots of Obama's Rage" and features an interview with Obama's half brother, George Obama

Produced for $2.1 million, the project earned $6.2 million in three days, giving it a per screen average of $5,940. This beats out the No.1 film "Expendables 2's" per screen rate. Since its limited release date on July 13, the film has grossed $20 million in 53 days.

But despite the success of "Obama's America," it still ranks only number five on the list of top ten highest-grossing political documentaries of all time.

See how the film's box office earnings stack up, according to numbers from Box Office Mojo:

1. "Fahrenheit 9/11"—$120 million

2. "Sicko"—$25 million

3. "An Inconvenient Truth"—$24 million

4. "Bowling for Columbine"—$22 million

5. "2016: Obama's America"—$21 million

6. "Capitalism: A Love Story"—$14.4 million

7. "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed"—$7.7 million
