If you’re like us, you’ve been religiously tracking the Sony hacking scandal involving Seth Rogen and Evan Golberg’s The Interview for any and all developments and the latest bit of news is one of the more intriguing bits we've heard.
While Sony continues to figure out exactly when and how they're going to distribute the comedy, a New York-based theater has made plans to put on a live reading of The Interview's script just two days after Christmas.
Yes, it sounds farfetched, but according to an event listing on the Treehouse Theater’s website, the show will go on. "This is an opportunity for people to come together in the name of free speech, in defiance of all who have threatened it," the site reads.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Benny Scheckner, one of the live read’s producers, obtained a draft of the movie’s script under mysterious circumstances. We say "mysterious" because no one seems to know how he got it - not even the artistic director Rob Reese. The listing states "the script is close to the final version," though the accuracy of this assertion remains unclear.
The Interview live read is free to the public, so there’s no harm, no foul if you attend. The event touts "some of the finest performers from the Upright Citizen’s Brigade," and will be followed by a charity event, called F--- You Kim Jong-un, benefiting the citizens of North Korea.
As nice as this may sound to some, we’d be surprised if these guys actually pulled this off. Yes, it’s all in the interest of free speech and patriotism, but at the same time the circumstances surrounding the live read are suspect at best. For instance, how did they come across the script? And even if the material is legit enough, we don’t think Sony would give their blessing to something like this.
After all, The Interview is still their intellectual property, and ever since President Obama took a shot at their ego for succumbing to the hackers’ threats, they announced that they still hope to release the film in one form or another. This live read isn't going to help Sony's cause in any way, shape or form, so it's a bit hard to imagine that they'll actually let it happen.
The funniest thing about all of this has got to be the fact that The Interview is said to be far less entertaining than the controversy surrounding it. But at this point, it doesn’t matter. If you tell people they can’t see a movie, chances are they’ll do everything in their power to do it. Hey, at least we have the porn version to look forward to, right?
