suicide squadIt’s been months since we got our first glimpse at "Suicide Squad" from San Diego Comic-Con, but tonight that was remedied with a new trailer. As Queen’s "Bohemian Rhapsody" played, we were treated to closer looks at the prominent players, from Harley Quinn and the voices in her head to Captain Boomerang being his usual idiotic self (don’t crack a can in the middle of a mission, dude). Compared to the somber tone of the last preview, this upbeat and frenzied trailer painted the August blockbuster in a brand new light.

While much of what "Suicide Squad" has in store is still being kept on the down low, we were treated to a lot of the movie’s action in tonight’s trailer. More importantly, there were a few important snippets concerning the plot and main characters. Some were minor things that only hardcore comic fans will appreciate, while others clued us in on what the band of criminal operatives will encounter. Give the trailer another watch, and then take a look at the key things we learned!

Deadshot has his wrist guns

Let’s start this off with something simple: firearms. Floyd Lawton, a.k.a. Deadshot, is one of the world’s most talented assassins, and to that end, he loves his guns, from pistols to rifles to the heavy duty stuff. We already knew Deadshot would be wearing his white mask in "Suicide Squad" (covering star Will Smith’s face), but this trailer confirmed he’ll also be using his trademark wrist guns. When you don’t have a gun in your holster handy, just start shooting bullets out of the ones on your arm. It’s not like this reveal will have any big importance to the plot, but it’s the little things like this that matter to the comic book fans who have been hoping for an adaptation of the villainous assassin they know and love from the comics. It’s a special device used by the character, and it’s nice to see that it’s made the transition into live-action.

Mystical shenanigans are afoot

As usual, the Suicide Squad is being organized to deal with a threat to dangerous for normal operatives. This trailer didn’t specify what Amanda Waller and Rick Flag have in store for the criminals in terms of the mission that they’re performing, but it looks like we got a taste of the endgame. There’s a shot of what looks like a giant, green being that’s able to survive a train passing through it. This thing later shoots out tendrils to take out the soldiers shooting at it, and only seconds later, we see the Squad approaching a cloud of mystical smoke with what look like people fueling it. Looking over the movie’s lineup, Enchantress is the likely culprit for what’s occurring, but we’ll talk about her later. Regardless of who it is, it’s great to see that the DC Cinematic Universe is fully embracing superpowers and magic from the get go.

We’ll see Harley Quinn’s origin

Before the New 52, Harley Quinn simply put on makeup to look like a clown, but in the New 52, Joker tossed her into the same vat of chemicals that altered his look. The result was unsurprisingly the same; her skim was bleached white and her hair color was permanently changed. The same event will occur in "Suicide Squad," as we saw in this brand new trailer. It was hinted in the last trailer that we’d see Joker torturing Dr. Harleen Quinzel into insanity, and tossing her into the same chemicals he fell into will serve as her rebirth. He dives in to retrieve her (can’t let his new creation drown, after all), and once out, those two are officially the maniacal couple we both love and hate. We don’t know how much of the two of them we’ll see together in the movie, but hopefully a lot.
