Richard Linklater‘s next movie, Before Midnight, looks like it’s going to be so good, it might literally blind audience members with its awesomeness.
Despite this, there is perhaps one movie on Linklater’s upcoming list which is even more eagerly awaited, his Dazed And Confused Follow-Up.
In a recent interview on The Q&A With Jeff Goldsmith podcast, Linklater revealed his vision for the ‘spiritual successor’ to his 1993 coming-of-age cult comedy hit:
I think after doing [‘Before Midnight’] which was pretty intimate and my film before [‘Bernie’] was pretty intimate too, I kinda want to take on an ensemble again. So I have a college comedy I’ve been working on for years that’s sort of a spiritual sequel to ‘Dazed [And Confused]’. It’s set on the first weekend of college with a bunch of people when you move into where you’re going to be living and you meet all these people.
The rumors of a Dazed and Confused sequel have been circulating for sometime. Back in 2010 it was semi-officially titled That’s What I’m Talking About and would have seen Matthew McConaughey reprise his role as Wooderson. It seemed McConaughey was game, and by 2012 it looked like Linklater had secured funding. Unfortunately something seems to have gone awry since then. He told Jeff Goldsmith that due to a lack of “big name casts” financing had dried up. Despite his critical success, Linklater explained his name still “doesn’t get you much” in Hollywood. Last we heard, Linklater expected to deliver the follow up movie in 2014. Have those plans now been scuppered?
Linklater also suggested he had quite a few working titles, suggesting the previous title of That’s What I’m Talking About has been ditched. He also gave a very slight mention of the sequels premise:
Yeah, it’s sequentially it’s like if Mitch went off to college, so sequentially it’s like ‘80. It’s all that partying you do before the first class, if you get 3 or 4 days, so it’s a long weekend of college.
