Channing Tatum’s anti-gravity boots are the coolest thing about ‘Jupiter Ascending’

Sci-fi movie "Jupiter Ascending" opened in theaters Feb. 6, and though it received generally poor reviews and flopped at the box office over the weekend, it did introduce us to one cool piece of tech: a pair of anti-gravity boots worn by Channing Tatum.

Throughout the movie, Tatum's character, Caine Wise, flies around both Earth and space using the boots.

They're arguably the best part of the film.

Here's a closer look at the soles:

The ease with which they allow Caine to move around brings to mind the hoverboard seen in the "Back to the Future" sequel. It's as if he has an invisible one connected to the bottom of his feet.

If you're wondering how Tatum pulled off the appearance of the anti-gravity boots, they're actually just skates. According to the film's production notes, Tatum actually skated on ramps, platforms, and cables for his stunts. The wheels were erased out of the film in post production.

Pro inline skater Cory Miller and vert skater Taïg Khris trained Tatum to prep him for the role.

A total of six men pulled wires for Tatum behind a green screen as he skated on a three-sided treadmill that was four meters in length and two meters wide. Many of the times he was carrying Kunis.

'Birdman' was originally going to end with this epic Johnny Depp cameo

Michael Keaton BirdmanSPOILER WARNING: Just in case you couldn't tell by the headline, this article will be discussing the ending of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman in depth. If you haven't seen Birdman and wish not to be spoiled, please click away to one of our other articles!

Of all the films nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman has what can certainly be called the most ambiguous ending.

After nearly two hours of watching fantastical things happen in what is otherwise an entirely realistic world, it's questionable how to interpret exactly what happens in the movie's final moments. It's a conclusion that has sparked a lot of debate amongst audiences, but what's perhaps even more interesting about it is that it actually wasn't the original idea developed by Inarritu and co-writers Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, and Armando Bo. Instead, the original thought was to have a fascinating and awesome-sounding scene starring Johnny Depp.

Johnny Depp
Alex Dinelaris was recently a guest on the podcast Q&A With Jeff Goldsmith, and it was during his conversation with the host that the screenwriter revealed the original plans for Birdman's ending.

Essentially, everything would have been different following the moment in the movie where Michael Keaton's Riggan Thompson uses a real gun to shoot himself on stage. After that, however, the camera would have swung around to see the audience cheering, and then come back to the stage in a time jump. There we would have seen Riggan back on stage and talking with someone akin to James Lipton or Charlie Rose, talking about the show's incredible review (presumably the one by the New York Times' Tabitha Dickinson).

But then, Dinelaris explained:

Then the camera prowled like it did the whole film, went back stage through the halls we've seen the whole time and we'd get to the dressing room where literally Johnny Depp would be sitting looking in the mirror and putting on his Riggan Thomson wig and then the poster ofPirates of the Caribbean 5 would be in the back. In Jack Sparrow's voice [the inner monologue would say], 'What the fuck are we doing here, mate?' It was going to be the satire of the endless loop of that.

johnny depp pirates of the caribbeanWhile I appreciated Birdman's ending for what it was, it's hard to argue that this original ending isn't far superior to what ended up being put in the final cut of the movie. Unfortunately, as Dinelaris would point out, the production could neither get Johnny Depp to agree to cameo nor the permission to get a Pirates of the Caribbean 5 poster.

I assume that Johnny Depp probably wasn't comfortable with doing this both because Pirates 5 is currently in the works and perhaps because he doesn't have that kind of ill-will towards the franchise, but I must admit that I kind of wish that this concept wasn't just abandoned.

Depp would certainly be the perfect choice for that kind of commentary, but he is far from the only actor who has gone through the kinds of ups and downs experienced by the fictional Riggan Thompson. Nicolas Cage is the first one that pops into mind, but there are surely many, many others.

star wars episode 7 lightsaber

When the first teaser trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” premiered in Nov., fans were torn over the appearance of a new three-pronged lightsaber.

Some loved it. Others hated it. (What was the point of those mini lightsabers on the side? Clearly, they’re not going to protect your hands.)

During a recent interview with Collider at the Visual Effects Society Awards, Abrams said he hasn’t been able to avoid the controversy either.

jj abrams star warsIn fact, the “Star Wars: Episode VII” director says he has fielded a lot tons of emails and analysis both defending and arguing against the practicality and logistics of the new lightsaber.

“I will say that what has been funny ... is since the lightsaber has come out, I cannot tell you how many contradictory emails I have received from people who have both defended it with unbelievably detailed graphics,” Abrams told Collider. “I've gotten things that are nuts. And I’ve gotten people who have shown how it will kill you and how it doesn’t make any sense.”

“It’s been the funniest thing to see the arguments that have developed over this thing,” added Abrams.

Perhaps, most famous was late-night host Stephen Colbert’s defensive graphic and accompanying explanation of the new lightsaber in Dec. claiming the three-pronged design in "perfect."

Abrams added that the three-pronged lightsaber underwent a “number of conversations.”

“It was a sketch that became a whole thing,” said Abrams. “This was not done without a lot of conversation. It’s fun to see people have the conversation that we had, but in reverse.”

“Star Wars: Episode VII” is in theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced a plan to bring together the worlds of Marvel Studios and Spider-Man.

It's a move that will likely introduce a brand new version of Spider-Man in future films. According to a statement released on the Marvel website Monday night, the new Spider-Man will appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe. The announcement says in part:

Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. There have been lots of rumblings of late surrounding Marvel's impending brand overhaul, now it appears this latest news may be just the beginning of a long-awaited rebirth for the company, and for Spider-Man in particular.

The character has existed within the world of Marvel for some 50 years, and has fans spanning several generations. The Spider-Man franchise has so far earned $4 billion across five films released worldwide.

amazing spider man

This is huge.

Late Monday night, Marvel and Sony announced a partnership that would allow Spider-Man into Marvel's cinematic universeIn other words, expect to see Spidey in some future Marvel movies, possibly alongside the Avengers and more.

Marvel Studios, which was purchased by Disney in 2009 for $4 billion, has the rights to Marvel characters including Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man, Black Widow, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and more.

While Spider-Man is a Marvel character, he is one of several Marvel characters that have had previous long-standing deals with other movie studios which prevented Marvel Studios from including the characters in its movies.

Fox has the rights to the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four, while Sony Pictures had the rights to Spider-Man.

Under the partnership, a new Spider-Man movie will be released July 28, 2017.

It's expected that current Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield will be replaced in the new films. A press release says the movie will take on a "new creative direction" for the character.

The entry of the new Spider-Man film has shifted the release of Marvel's upcoming releases as well.

The movie will be co-produced by Marvel and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige along with Amy Pascal. According to the release, Sony Pictures will "continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films."

In addition, Marvel has a few other big plans for Spidey.

Before the release of the next Spider-Man movie, the character will appear in a yet unannounced Marvel movie.

That movie will most likely be the next "Captain America" sequel, "Captain America: Civil War."

Disney previously tried to get Spider-Man back at Marvel, according to leaked emails during the Sony hack. Back then, Disney reportedly wanted Spider-Man for "Civil War," a storyline which pits Captain America against Iron Man. Spider-Man is at the heart of that comic as his allegiance is torn between between the two.

According to the release, the studios are also "exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films."

That means you could see Captain America or any of the Avengers or other Marvel characters in future Spidey flicks.

All together, the five previous Spider-Man movies have made over $4 billion worldwide.

This weekend, the highly-anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey will hit theaters, with the adaptation of E.L. James' novel currently tracking to debut with a $60 million opening weekend, which falls on Valentine's Day.

Of course, Fifty Shades of Grey is the first installment of the novel trilogy, but Universal Pictures still hasn't announced any formal plans to adapt the author's follow-up books, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed yet.

However, director Sam Taylor-Johnson revealed during a fan screening in New York City over the weekend, alongside cast members Jamie DornanDakota Johnson and E.L. James that both books will be adapted for the big screen, although we have no confirmation from the studio quite yet.

Fifty Shades of Grey will likely be the first blockbuster of 2015, so the news shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will surely be back as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, but no other cast members have been confirmed at this time.

Fifty Shades of Grey was first published in 2011 and centers on the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Fifty Shades Darker was also published in 2011, with Fifty Shades Freed rounding out the trilogy in 2012, which both explore the couple's deepening relationship. The trilogy has been translated in over 50 languages worldwide and has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever.

2017 is going to be an absolutely huge year for Disney

sony the amazing spider manDisney's 2017 lineup just became even bigger.

Monday evening, Marvel and Sony Pictures announced a huge partnership that will allow Spider-Man to appear in upcoming Marvel movies. The deal included a new Spider-Man movie that will hit theaters July 28, 2017.

Now that Spider-Man has been added to the lineup, Disney's 2017 has the possibility of becoming one the studio's biggest years — if not the best — at the box office.

That's saying something because this year alone is expected to be a huge year for Disney. The studio will release two of this year's most-anticipated films: "The Avengers" sequel, "The Avengers: Age of Ultron," and "Star Wars: Episode VII."

The first "Avengers" film grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. "Star Wars" on its own has the potential of becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. Analysts have predicted the sequel could hit $2 billion at theaters worldwide. The Guardian made a case for "Episode VII"being the first $3 billion film. (For reference, 2009's "Avatar" made $2.7 billion worldwide.)

So how is 2017 shaping up?

The addition of Spider-Man will give Walt Disney Studios a total of three Marvel movies in theaters that year. Generally, the Mouse House puts out two per year.

Disney, which owns Lucasfilm, Pixar, and Marvel studios under its umbrella of movie-making vehicles will also put out "Star Wars: Episode VIII" and a long-awaited "Toy Story" sequel.

A fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film with Johnny Depp is also expected.

Here's a look at Disney's big movies for 2017 so far:

Release dateMovieDisney property
May 5, 2017"Guardians of the Galaxy 2"Marvel
June 16, 2017"Toy Story 4"Pixar
July 7, 2017"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales"Disney
July 28, 2017untitled Spider-Man movieMarvel / Sony Pictures
Nov. 3, 2017"Thor: Ragnarok"Marvel
Dec. 2017"Star Wars: Episode VIII"Lucasfilm

There's also another untitled Pixar movie that may or may not be released in Nov.

The Street's Chris Katje predicts three of those, "Toy Story 4,""Spider-Man," and "Star Wars," will be at least $1 billion movies.

"Toy Story 3" grossed over $1 billion at theaters in 2010. Another "Pirates" film has a good chance of cracking $1 billion also. The fourth film made $963.4 million.

toy story that time forgot

The "Spider-Man" estimate may be a bit high considering the last two films failed to crack $800 million apiece at the box office. (The highest-grossing "Spider-Man" movie is 2007's critically-panned "Spider-Man 3" with $890 million.)

After a total of five Spider-Man movies between 2002 and 2014, it's not certain how receptive people will be for a third Spider-Man reboot in such a small time frame.

However, fans are pretty excited for Spidey's triumphant return to Marvel. After the announcement was made, Marvel became a trending topic on Twitter with the hashtag #WelcomeHomeSpiderman becoming a favorite on the social media site.

If anyone's able to bring the webslinger back to the big screen, it's Disney's well-oiled Marvel Cinematic Universe. And if all that pans out, there's a possibility of Disney having four billion dollar movies in 2017.

sinister six comic

Last night's deal that finally brings Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has also affected Sony's plans for their Sinister Six spinoff.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Sony has pushed The Sinister Six out of its planned November 11, 2016 release date, as they continue to develop and "rethink" their plans, in the aftermath of this groundbreaking deal.

Drew Goddard remains attached to write and direct The Sinister Six, but, in the wake of this news, it's possible that the studio may have him write a completely new draft of the script. At the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, fans who downloaded the Shazam app were given a tease of the villains that may have been included in The Sinister Six, such as Rhino, the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Kraven, Vulture and Mysterio. Those villains were never confirmed as the actual Sinister Six lineup, so it still remains to be seen which of Spider-Man's enemies will appear in the sequel.

Since Spider-Man is being completely rebooted once again, The Sinister Six may have to do so as well, since villains such as Rhino and Green Goblin existed in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. With Andrew Garfield most likely not returning as Spider-Man, it's possible the characters could stay the same, but they may also be re-cast. What characters would you like to see in The Sinister Six

Fans want the new Spider-Man to be a Black, Hispanic teen

amazing spider man 2

Now that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are joining forces to bring a new incarnation of "Spider-Man" to the big screen, the Internet is abuzz about who the new films should revolve around.

Typically, Spider-Man follows the adventures of Peter Parker as the storied webslinger. However, many fans are calling for Marvel to ditch the Parker storyline and adapt a newer, younger version of Spider-Man: Hispanic teen, Miles Morales.

Who is Miles Morales?

miles morales spider-manIn 2011, Marvel introduced another version of Spidey in a parallel world known as Marvel's Ultimate Universe.

Morales is a 13-year-old half-black, half-Latino middle schooler who takes on the role of the webslinger after the death of Peter Parker.

ultimate spider man suit

Like Peter, Miles also gets his powers after a bite by an enhanced spider, but is hesitant to use his powers until after Parker's passing. (Cue the whole with great power comes great responsibility mantra.)

"Community" actor Donald Glover voices Morales on Disney XD's animated series "Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man" featuring the character.

But what about Andrew Garfield?

andrew garfield amazing spiderman 2

Sorry Garfield fans. It's unlikely that the British actor, who starred as Peter Parker in the two latest "Spider-Man" films will be back again. Both The Wrap and the Wall Street Journal report Garfield, is out of the role for the next film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marc Webb, who directed the two "Amazing Spider-Man" movies will not be back either.

It looks like we're starting from scratch.

What are the chances of seeing a new Spider-Man?

amazing spider manIt's difficult to give a definitive answer. Peter Parker is Spider-Man just as much as Tony Stark is Iron Man.

However, it wouldn't be out of question for the new films to consider taking a new direction.

Ben Fritz over at the Wall Street Journal reports the next Spidey film won't be a rehashed origin story that audiences have received twice in the past decade on screen.

In a previous interview with Indiewire, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who have been behind the Spider-Man film franchise since its inception at Sony, were both adamant Miles Morales would never be a part of future Spider-Man movies.

“The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today's world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don't know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man," said Arad.

However, fans shouldn't be too concerned. THR reports both Arad and Tolmach will have "no real say in the creative direction" of any new Spidey films.

For those who love Garfield in the role, the actor told Comic Book Resources April 2014 he fully supported an adaptation of Morales on screen.

"Miles Morales was a huge moment in this character's comic book life," Garfield told Comic Book Resources. "And I do believe that we can do that [on screen]. It's something I'm really interested in figuring out; an eloquent way of coexisting, or passing on the torch."

what we do in shadows screen 2 LIGHTImagine "This Is Spinal Tap," but instead of rock musicians, the subjects were vampires.

That's exactly what we get with "What We Do In The Shadows," a faux-documentary from New Zealeand co-written, co-directed and starring Jemaine Clement, better known as one-half of the comedy/folk duo "Flight of the Conchords."

The premise is simple — a documentary camera crew follows around a group of flatmates/vampires in their natural habitat and showcases their day-to-day life, which isn't all drinking blood and sleeping in coffins.  It's a lot like "The Office" ... if it were set in New Zealand and starred vampires.

what we do in shadows screen 1 LIGHT"Shadows" pokes fun at vampires themselves by making careful references to the films that paved the way. Everything from the classic "Nosferatu," to more modern vampire films like the "Twilight" series and even Francis Ford Coppola's "Dracula" from the early 90s are alluded to, among many others.

The humor is fairly dry and deadpan, often featuring normally mundane roommate situations like who's going to do the dishes suddenly become hysterically funny when vampires hundreds of years old are bickering about it.

what we do in shadows screen 3LIGHT"What We Do In The Shadows" arrives in a limited amount of theaters this weekend with little fanfare, which is a real shame considering I laughed harder during this film than any other mainstream comedy in recent memory.

The chemistry between the film's writers/directors/stars Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi is fantastic, and every character has their high moments.

In honor of the "Deadpool" movie coming out in exactly one year, Ryan Reynolds has shared the first photo of him on set with the popular Marvel antihero.

Reynolds says the costume below is a prototype.

For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Deadpool is a comic book character who knows he is a comic book character. This leads to his breaking the fourth wall inside comics. There are separate comic bubbles differentiating where he'll talk out loud, to himself, and to the audience.

Reynolds has been trying to get a "Deadpool" movie made since he played the character in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" film.

He even went so far as to shoot test footage for a "Deadpool" movie that ended up going viral.

A filmmaker says he made over $200,000 by renting out his home on Airbnb

DanyPapineau

Dany Papineau, from Montreal in Canada, says he was saved from the brink of bankruptcy after making thousands by letting out his home on Airbnb.

If you don't know about Airbnb, it's a website that lets people rent out their property to holiday guests. It works as a sort of online marketplace.

Papineau, an actor and filmmaker, told Business Insider that he was left completely broke after self-producing his first feature film called "2 Frogs in the West." He said he borrowed nearly half a million dollars from friends and family to finance the movie. It got a positive response, but the cash ran out.

Papineau and his boyfriend, Brad, decided to put their home on the market to try to make some money back — but their realtor (strangely) suggested they let it out on Airbnb instead. They did, and the move worked out well.

"Not only has this service allowed me to keep my home by hosting over 1,000 guests from around the world, but I was able to generate more than $200,000 from this endeavour," Papineau told Business Insider. "It changed our life," he added.

Their house is rather nice, incidentally ...

IMG_7264

On the day Papineau contacted BI, he had taken $1,500 of bookings. "I don't think I've ever made this much money in one day," he mentioned.

The dream didn't start off particularly well, though. "When I first started on Airbnb, I was a bit naive and I was saying '"yes" to all booking requests," Papineau noted.

On one occasion, a guest pretended to book Papnieau's place for three people. Instead, 30 revellers arrived for a big party, which caused $4,000 in damages. Papineau says that a recent story about a host who saw $12,000 of damage at his property through an unruly set of Airbnb guests moved him to get in touch.

But Papineau said he and Brad learned their lesson, and now make a huge amount of money hosting people at their house. And as a result, the couple have set up AirbnbSecrets.com, an online resource that offers coaching tips for would-be Airbnb users.

Papineau offers video tutorials to people who want to set themselves up as hosts. Over the past year  they've helped others turn Airbnb into a profitable business as well as a way of offering more alternative holiday accommodation.

Papineau explained that Airbnb "basically provides the entire recipe required to start a successful Airbnb listing anywhere on the planet and monetise it to its maximum potential." Where he failed at marketing his film, he's succeeded in launching an Airbnb venture, he concedes.

"Everything happens for a reason and I've learned tons of business lessons from this adventure. So much that I can say that my Airbnb success is directly linked to what I've learned from failing to properly market my film," he wrote.

Having a nice house also helps, of course. Have a look inside Papineau's property.

50 shades of grey

After much anticipation, "Fifty Shades of Grey" will arrive in theaters on February 13.

The reviews have started pouring in, and critics are saying the adaptation of E.L. James' hotly-anticipated BDSM tale of romance, sex, and floggers will not get you as hot and bothered as the book might.

For those who have avoided the phenomenon which has been dubbed "mommy porn," the movie follows college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) who gets swept up in the allure of mysterious billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) after she interviews him for the school newspaper.

The two have an undeniable mutual attraction and the young, naive Ms. Steele ends up signing a contract to engage in a BDSM (Bondage, Domination, Sadism, and Masochism) relationship with Grey, and that's where things start to get spicy ... in the book series.

While many critics are praising Johnson's acting, the movie has left a lot of critics searching for all the sex they were promised and teased in trailers.

The first book has 130 instances of the word sex (we checked). After you hit page 58, you're hard pressed to find a 10-page gap where the word isn't used again. This includes variations such as "sexual,""sexy," and one use of the word sexiest. According to critics, the film has about 15-20 minutes of sex in it out of its more than two-hour running time.

Here's what the critics are saying:

USA Today:

Those looking for hot, kinky sex will be disappointed. Fewer than 15 of the movie's 125 minutes feature sex scenes. Discussion of contracts and objections over line items outweigh erotica. Even the graphic nudity grows numbing ...

Entertainment Weekly:

The production is also oddly sedate—the most polite aspirational romance between a screwed-up prince and girlish princess ever to include loving close-ups of dominance-and-submission sex toys. Presumably the look-but-don’t-pant tone of the storytelling was negotiated among the book’s author, director Sam (as in Samantha) Taylor-Johnson, screenwriter Kelly Marcel, and various producers and studio types; the movie version appears to be aimed at a younger consumer crowd than -the readers (albeit a crowd qualified for R-rated entertainment). In any event, the result is confounding, leaving both those coming to the Fifty Shades phenomenon for the first time as well as those who have read the book to wonder, for different reasons, Where’s the beef?

Rolling Stone:

I'm shocked — shocked, do you hear me?!? — that the film version of E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey is such a dull, decorous affair, about as erotic as an ad for Pottery Barn.

50 shades of grey

The Hollywood Reporter:

Their first use of his playroom is packaged in a montage-y way that feels nonthreatening and more than a little generic, complete with intrusive pop-track accompaniment. A few dom-sub contract details and a couple of online photos notwithstanding, the movie maintains an artful restraint even as it talks dirty; the sex scenes suggest more than those of the standard Hollywood drama without quite going there.

LA Times:

The celebrated kinky elements in "Fifty Shades" are so used as a tease in this considerably less explicit film (rated no more than R for, among other things, "some unusual behavior") that when the worst does take place — it's a painful and distinctly unpleasant whipping, if you must know — it feels so out of place it seems to have come from a different film altogether.

New York Observer:

Neither of the actors are ever out of handcuffs long enough to develop anything close to a real character, and despite the overheated, heavy-breathing publicity blitz surrounding the movie, there is no full-frontal nudity. Still, if word of mouth doesn’t kill Fifty Shades of Grey, the door is open at the end for more to come. Maybe in future installments there will even be something that resembles a plot. For now, the entire movie is about as sexy as a root canal.

Time Out:

A watered-down adaptation that hides coyly under the sheets, "Fifty Shades of Grey" is full of all sorts of sex, but it's still a hopelessly softcore erotic drama that fails to be even a fraction as titillating as the EL James books that inspired it. And yet, strangely, that's exactly why it works.

Associated Press:

With all that irresistible anticipation, how could a movie about BDSM be so run of the mill? The short answer: fear and money. It's one thing to read about the bondage-enabled sexual awakening of a virgin. It's quite another to see it depicted on screen.

At the end of the day, the reviews won't matter.

The adaptation of E.L. James' famed BDSM tale of romance, sex, and floggers is set to have a huge weekend at the box office. Pre-sales have been through the roof. According to Fandango, "Fifty Shades" is both the top February ticket pre-seller and the biggest R-rated ticket-seller in the company's history. It's also one of Fandango's top advance ticket sellers of all time.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" is already projected to have a $60 million opening weekend at the box office, and two sequels are on the way

Essentially, every woman is dragging her boyfriend and/or a gaggle of girls to go out and see this film.

You'll be able to buy and build your own three-pronged 'Star Wars' lightsaber later this year

star wars the force awakens sith lightsaber

If you were excited about the somewhat controversial three-pronged lightsaber teased in the first "Star Wars: Episode VII" trailer, good news, you'll be able to buy one later this year.

This fall, you (or your kids) will be able to get your hands on a three-pronged, four-pronged, or even five-pronged lightsaber thanks to Hasbro.

Fans will be able to create and customize the lightsaber of their dreams with the new Star Wars Bladebuilders line.

If you’ve been to Disney World, this is very similar to the build-your-own lightsaber feature available in the parks.

The lightsabers are recommended for ages 4 and up, but we're sure that won't stop "Star Wars" fans from wanting to get in on the fun.

We were able to get a sneak peak of some of the Bladebuilders line during a preview for the Toy Fair last week. We'll have more photos and video of them over the weekend, but for now, here's a first look at them.

This is the main lightsaber set.

StarWars_Bladebuilders_Jedi_Master

The $49.99 Jedi Master Lightsaber kit in the Bladebuilders set will come with one main lightsaber that lights up and makes sound and two independent “lightdaggers” which also light up.

It will also come with a few add ons (an expansion hilt, 2 elbow connectors, a dual connector, and a cross connector), so you can go crazy creating your own custom dual or triple-bladed lightsaber.

The lightsaber will need AAA batteries, but this edition will come with some demo batteries.

Here are some of the different ways you can configure the lightsabers.

Instead of a full-size dual lightsaber, maybe you want a mini lightdagger on the opposite end.

StarWars_Bladebuilders_Jedi_Master

Maybe you want three blades.

Or maybe you'll want to build a lightsaber trident.StarWars_Bladebuilders_Jedi_Master_4

Maybe you'll just want to ditch the large lightsaber and put the two little lightdaggers together.

If you want to get really fancy, you can add on an expansion hilt and go crazy. If you have enough pieces, you can make a six-pronged lightsaber with the one below.

A few thoughts:

1. It doesn't seem to make sense that you get two different colors in the kit. Wouldn't you want your lightsaber to be all one color like the one shown off in the film trailer?

2. None of these photos show off the Kylo Ren design (at the start of this post). I promise you, you can build that lightsaber. That was what was shown to me at the Hasbro preview and I nearly lost it. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to take a photo then since it was embargoed. I should be able to get an image when heading back over to the Toy Fair this weekend.

3. It's also worth noting that none of the lightsabers in this kit are red like the one in the trailer. While this could just be Hasbro selling blue and green lightsabers from the light side of the force, could we possibly be seeing more variations in lightsabers down the road on the big screen?

Also available in the fall are lightsabers for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker which can also be attached with the main Jedi Master set. They will be on sale for $19.99.

These also light up and make sounds, but, unlike the pricier lightsaber kit, do not come with AAA batteries.

StarWars_Bladebuilders_Jedi_Master_6

If you still want to make even more additions to your custom lightsaber, you can purchase a $9.99 lightsaber hilt for Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Darth Vader.

Each one will be sold separately. Those will not light up or make sounds.

For parents who may be concerned about children swinging around those lightsabers and potentially poking an eye out, Hasbro will also release foam lightsabers for Yoda, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker that will be on sale for $14.99 each.

StarWars_Bladebuilders_Foam

The lightsabers will also be compatible with the other Buildbladers components, but will not light up and make sounds.

The new lightsabers will be part of Hasbro's big push into new "Star Wars" products this fall. Among the other items that will be available are a Chewbacca Furby, called Furbacca, and a line of "Star Wars" Play-Doh that comes complete with a Millennium Falcon.

I'll round up all of the "Star Wars" toys I check out this weekend in a subsequent post.

How '101 Dalmatians' and a Xerox machine saved Disney animation

In 1959, Disney’s animation department was in a dire predicament.

After funneling six years of money, time, and manpower into the artfully animated Sleeping Beauty, the film under-performed at the box office, leaving Disney with a beautiful, but unprofitable movie, and a mode of creation that the studio could not financially sustain.

In the winter of that year, Disney’s animation department underwent massive layoffs, reducing their staff of artists and animators from 551 employees to just 75.

The disappointing returns on Sleeping Beauty were so devastating to the company that Walt Disney‘s brother, Roy O. Disney, tried to convince Walt it was time to shut animation down and focus on TV production instead.

Given the amount of times you likely had “Let it Go” stuck in your head during the last year, you know that things turned out alright for the studio.

So, what saved the day? The answer might surprise you - Xerox technology.

With the animated feature 101 Dalmatians, Disney utilized the new technology in a way that massively cut production costs and revitalized the entire animation studio.

disney animator drawingBefore the advent of Xerography, Disney’s animation technique called for massive amounts of man hours, as each frame of the artists’ drawings had to be hand traced and painted onto an acetate cell.

At a recent press day, animator Floyd Norman - a Disney Legend - explained the process, “Back in those days animated films were made by hand, no technology. It was a handmade product. We drew it with pencil and paper. The inkers inked on sheets of acetate with ink and painted the cells with paint – took forever to do it and cost a lot of money.”

The use of Xerox technology allowed the animators drawings to be scanned directly onto the cell – eliminating the need for hand-inking, improving efficiency, and greatly reducing production costs.

According to Norman, “That was a great time saver, cutting down time production, and consequently saving lots of money, making animation at Disney viable again. We couldn’t afford to keep making these films; they just simply cost too much money. And Xerox, this new technology, enabled all animation to continue at the Disney studio.”

However, it wasn’t just the technology to create 101 Dalmatians that set it apart, but the content of the movie itself. Unlike the animated Disney films that preceded it, which were largely based on European fairy tales, 101 Dalmatians was an entirely modern movie that depicted the era the audience was living in on screen.

The characters watch television and drive cars. There are no princesses, curses, fairies, or dragons. Instead, 101 Dalmatians was the first Disney animated feature to bring to life contemporary world that audiences could recognize and relate to.

101 Dalmatians went on to become the highest-grossing film of 1961 by a massive margin, and adjusted for inflation, remains among the highest-grossing films of all time. And so it was that Disney’s animation studios were saved by a Xerox machine and 101 delightful, spotted pups.

101 dalmatians cruellaAs to the future of Disney animation Norman, who has witnessed great technological advances during his years at Disney,  is adamant that only one element truly matters  - storytelling.

”I would say the technology has changed considerably, considering what we did in 1959 moving over to the Xerox photocopy process, and what happened in the ’80s when we began to color our films using the computer, and on up into the ’90s when the whole process became digital. The one thing that has remained consistent is Disney storytelling…I’m sure our technology is going to continue to evolve. It always has. It always will. But hopefully the one thing that will remain consistent is the Disney storytelling, and that’s the magic that we can’t afford to lose. That’s what makes these films work.”

Released for a limited time, 101 Dalmatians is now available on a Diamond Edition Blu-ray.

Will Smith: 'After Earth' was 'the most painful failure in my career'

Will Smith Jaden Smith After Earth

Will Smith's last film, "After Earth," was a domestic flop when it debuted in May 2013.

The $130 million sci-fi flick from director M. Night Shyamalan, made just $60 million domestically.

While the movie, also starring Smith's son, Jaden, went on to make $243.8 million worldwide, the Sony and Columbia Pictures film received terrible reviews for Smith's wasted talent and references to Scientology that seemed a little too strong in a mostly generic, slow-moving, and boring film.

In a new interview with Esquire, Smith acknowledges that "After Earth""was the most painful failure" in his career.

Smith says "After Earth" hit him harder than the critically-panned 1999 film "Wild Wild West," because his now 16-year-old son Jaden was in it with him.

The film's failure led him to go on a hiatus for a year and a half to evaluate the sorts of movies he was putting out and contemplate why it was important for him to have a number-one movie at the box office.

Via Esquire:

Wild Wild West was less painful than After Earth because my son was involved in After Earth and I led him into it. That was excruciating. What I learned from that failure is how you win. I got reinvigorated after the failure of After Earth. I stopped working for a year and a half. I had to dive into why it was so important for me to have number-one movies. And I never would have looked at myself in that way. I was a guy who, when I was fifteen my girlfriend cheated on me, and I decided that if I was number one, no woman would ever cheat on me. All I have to do is make sure that no one's ever better than me and I'll have the love that my heart yearns for. And I never released that and moved into a mature way of looking at the world and my artistry and love until the failure of After Earth, when I had to accept that it's not a good source of creation.

Smith adds that the weekend after "After Earth" came out was a difficult time. Not only did he find out how poorly his film performed at theaters, but he also received bad news about his father.

I get the box-office numbers on Monday and I was devastated for about twenty-four minutes, and then my phone rang and I found out my father had cancer," said Smith. "That put it in perspective—viciously. And I went right downstairs and got on the treadmill. And I was on the treadmill for about ninety minutes."

"And that Monday started the new phase of my life, a new concept: Only love is going to fill that hole. You can't win enough, you can't have enough money, you can't succeed enough. There is not enough. The only thing that will ever satiate that existential thirst is love. And I just remember that day I made the shift from wanting to be a winner to wanting to have the most powerful, deep, and beautiful relationships I could possibly have."

tom hiddleston crimson peak

Universal and Legendary Pictures revealed the first trailer for director Guillermo del Toro's next movie "Crimson Peak" on Apple Trailers Friday and between the gothic house and the dead rising out of bathtubs, it looks pretty creepy.

Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers") stars as a  gentleman with a mysterious past along with Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska ("Alice and Wonderland"), and Charlie Hunnam ("Pacific Rim").

Here's the synopsis for the film:

"In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers."

You can't help but feel as if the premise feels slightly familiar while watching the trailer. It brings both "The Fall of the House of Usher" and Stephen King's "Rose Red" to mind.

"Crimson Peak" is in theaters October 16, 2015.

assassins creed II

During Ubisoft's quarterly financial conference call, CEO Yves Guillemot announced that their Assassin's Creed video game adaptation has been given the green light, with production already under way. The CEO also confirmed the December 21, 2016 release date, which puts the project up against an untitled animated project from Illumination Entertainment, with Hugh Jackman's The Greatest Showman on Earthopening just four days later on Christmas Day. Here's what Yves Guillemot had to say in a statement.

"We have the pleasure to announce today that the green light has been given by New Regency, and the production has already started. This is a very important milestone for the project and for our team on Assassin's Creed."

It isn't known if Yves Guillemot meant that pre-production has started, or principal photography has begun, but pre-production seems more likely, since Michael Fassbender is currently the only cast member attached. A rumor surfaced back in September that Robert Downey Jr. was being eyed to play Leonardo da Vinci, but that was never confirmed.

The project is based on the second game in the series, Assassin's Creed 2, withMichael Fassbender playing two characters in different timelines. In the present day scenes, the actor is playing Michael Lynch, a death row inmate who becomes a pawn in a war between the Assassins and the Templars. He becomes the subject of several experiments by an evil scientist named Joseph, although he gets help along the way by a character named Lara. The actor will also play an assassin named Aguilar de Agarorobo in scenes set during the Spanish Inquisition.

Justin Kurzel, who worked with Michael Fassbender in Macbeth, is directing from a screenplay that was originally written by Michael Leslie, with Scott FrankBill Collage and Adam Cooper also working on the script. Are you excited thatAssassin's Creed is finally moving forward? Chime in with your thoughts, and stay tuned for more updates.

Assassin's Creed comes to theaters December 21st, 2016 and stars Michael Fassbender. The film is directed by Justin Kurzel.
