Why Canceling 'The Sinister Six' Would Be A Bad Idea For Sony's 'Spider-Man' Franchise

Rhino, Amazing Spider-man 2

This weekend, a very loose rumor circulated that Sony was canceling The Sinister Six as a potential spinoff to the troubled Amazing Spider-Man series. That would leave Sony with two (or more, or less!) direct follow-ups to The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as a spinoff featuring the character of Venom. It's unclear what would happen with those three other films. But The Sinister Six should have a leg up, given that much of the not-very-successful The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spent time teasing a villain free-for-all. Sony has made a number of dubious decisions regarding the Spider-Man films. Pulling the plug on The Sinister Six could very well be the worst.

The Sinister Six has been linked to a potential January shoot, to be written and directed by Drew Goddard. It was recently revealed that it would definitely hit theaters before the Alex Kurtzman Venom. And it has been suggested as an able replacement for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, that film in limbo following the dwindling box office numbers of solo Spidey adventures. You could see how Sony would be reluctant to take a chance on extending the brand with a comic book ensemble film featuring lesser-known b-and-c list characters, and villains at that.

Even by default, The Sinister Six is the best of all these ideas. But default isn't necessary. Six mastermind Drew Goddard is one of the hottest, most talented and most desired filmmakers in Hollywood. Like potential Venom director Alex Kurtzman, Goddard came up through JJ Abrams' world of Alias and Lost, becoming an in-demand scribe with scripts like Cloverfield. Unlike Kurtzman, who previously helmed the artificial drama People Like Us, Goddard has actually directed a good movie: his Cabin In The Woods is one of the most purely enjoyable cult classics of the last decade. Goddard's already had to cede the Daredevil Netflix series and the Matt Damon vehicle The Martian for a chance to make The Sinister Six. Clearly, someone's made him a promise.

Sony's got the chance to play in a sandbox that no one's ever seen before. The comic book movies have been so beholden to an already-established mythology that you'd think it were Scripture. But the Spider-Man villains have never really been star attractions in the comics, even though Spidey fights a diverse and colorful band of baddies every week. On one level, you'd be at a loss to think of how they'd function without Spider-Man as the focal point of the story.

On another level, there were the wonderful statements Alex Kurtzman recently said about the film, comparing it to The Wild Bunch and The Wages Of Fear. That's worth noting because the characters in those films are unsavory, but never flat-out evil. You side-eye them, but soon you root for them and their struggles. Decades of film have taught us that it doesn't matter if a protagonist is a saint or a sinner: audiences will cheer a character as long as they are good at their job.

amazing spider-man 2 electroKurtzman's reference points also emphasize that this might not be a "superhero" film, per se, making it a difficult challenge for the studio. But they also illustrate that this could still be a genre film, specifically one that employs a large, skilled ensemble. Why couldn't it be a heist film? A con-man film? Spider-Man is usually confined to New York, but a team of villains could travel the globe. The Sinister Six are coming to New York, but first they have to go on an adventure that takes them to Egypt, Borneo, Shanghai, etc. Maybe they have to fight another classic Spidey rogue, one who is just far too demented for their crew?

They've also got a pretty good foundation thus far. A Venom movie would live or die based on its leading man. The Sinister Six would rely more heavily on writing and characterizations, and those haven't been the strong suit for this series. Raimi's villains were fully dimensional, redeemable figures, and you had the sense the movies actually liked and respected them: witness the sand formation sequence of Spider-Man 3. The newer films have been more callous and dismissive of their baddies, as Lizard was ultimately a monster and Electro a sympathetic loner-turned-special effect. But assuming the Green Goblin and the Rhino are two of the villains, Sony could employ blossoming leading man Dane DeHaan and beloved character actor Paul Giamatti, not to mention Felicity Jones' Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat. That's a great start already, leaving you only three more roles to cast.

Which opens the door to Spidey's wonderful coterie of bad guys. What about Quentin Beck, the bitter failed actor-turned-illusionist who turned his special effect-expertise into a preposterous criminal identity as Mysterio? The frustrated scientist Herman Schultz, who becomes a burglar after inventing vibrational gloves that dub him the Shocker? Ex-Nazi Fritz Von Meyer, who picks up beekeeping, only to be karmically ravaged by a batch of mutant bees and turned into the ethereal Swarm? Or perhaps Sergei Kravinoff, the big game hunter known as Kraven who seeks a challenge by hunting Spider-Man for sport, later taking his own life upon achieving his goal of shackling the wall-crawler? And then Dmitri, Kraven's half-brother with shapeshifting abilities known as Chameleon, who plots revenge so insidious it nearly destroys Peter Parker's life? These aren't just seat-fillers – there's meat on these bones, and several Spider-Man villains have arcs appealing to a strong actor. There's also a solid bench, given that ideally there would be sequels.

spiderman 2, big eyesAs far as The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4, It seem like the jury's spoken in regards to Marc Webb's vision for Spider-Man, bogged down in parental intrigue that interests no one. Andrew Garfield has tried his hardest, but he hasn't been able to make people forget Tobey Maguire. Webb's direction isn't entirely to blame, but this series went from an automatic $300 million plus in America under Raimi to barely hobbling to the $200 million mark with 3D prices. And it's not as if Webb's films spend less money – well, they do, since Amazing Spider-Man 2's reported price-tag of $250 million is lower than the alleged $258 million cost of Spider-Man 3. But that's nobody's idea of cheaper, particularly since Sony spent a raftload on promoting the latest film. Webb had a LOT of help to make a smash, and this movie wasn't that: unfortunately Spider-Man is too fragile a property to just dump one director for another, especially with the tight release date frame.

And the character of Venom is wardrobe: audiences have no warm feelings for when he showed up in Spider-Man 3 played by a jittery Topher Grace. Venom isn't nearly the pop culture sensation he was in the nineties, particularly given how Marvel Comics overdosed on the antihero in that decade, and have thus far kept him on supporting casts in recent years. Series producer Avi Arad has kept Venom a top priority at Sony, forcing him into Raimi's third film instead of Raimi's preferred villain combo of Sandman and the Vulture, and teasing his arrival in the new films. But it's not like there are stacks of great Venom stories waiting to be told. Once you introduce his murderous enemy Carnage, you've painted yourself into a storytelling corner where you have to keep introducing symbiote-based characters like a clown car.

If there's any truth to this rumor, then it could be one of many dominoes falling. The announcement of The Sinister Six and the Venom movie were borne out of confidence for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Since that confidence was unwarranted, maybe Sony is putting the kibosh on Venom too. Or maybe the studio is just flat-out giving Spidey a rest. Spider-Man was a big deal because we saw the earlier movies at a time when the schedule wasn't littered with superhero movies. Sony should probably let us miss him a bit so that we can actually want him back. Populating his universe with interesting stories independent of his appearance might be the best strategy. The Sinister Six gives Sony the best opportunity to achieve this.

Here's Everything We Know So Far About Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club Sequel

Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk teased fans of both the book and film last year when he announced he was thinking about a sequel to the cult classic.

Yesterday, ahead of his appearance at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday, he confirmed the news.

Palahniuk told USA Today he was inspired to revisit the story by a couple of things – because fans of the original never let him forget his “promise”; and when he started facing issues associated with his own approach to middle age and fatherhood.

“You’re still not really happy but for different reasons,” he said.

“Also the idea that if you suppress that wild, creative part of you — that Tyler part of you — do you lose the best part of you? Sure, your life is more stable and safe, but is it a better life?”

He kept most of the details under wraps, but was happy enough to divulge that it won’t be a novel. It’s a 10-issue comic book series, called Fight Club 2, with the first issue scheduled for release on April 8, 2015.

Here’s more detail from his interview with USA Today:

The still-unnamed lead character’s life with wife Marla and nine-year-old son Junior is a rocky one.

Tyler Durden returns, obviously, but we get a deeper look into his origins, which involves some alternation between the future and past. Palahniuk gave USA Today this clues about Durden’s origins: “Tyler is something that maybe has been around for centuries and is not just this aberration that’s popped into his mind.”

The unnamed narrator successfully stopped Project Mayhem, but it’s making a comeback. The Fight Club remains, but it’s not the same one as we saw in the original.

fight club Palahniuk says the sequel is as much about the cultural response to Fight Club as it is about being a sequel. David Fincher will appear with Palahniuk on a panel at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday, where both will no doubt be asked about a film version of the sequel.

san diego comic con 2014

San Diego Comic-Con is this week!

From July 24-27, fans will descend upon the San Diego Convention Center decked out in costumes and fan gear prepped to catch a glimpse of some of their favorite stars.

But the event isn't just about cosplay and comics. Now in its 44th year, more than 130,000 people are expected to come out for television and movie panels where studios reveal first looks at some of the biggest future film releases.

With "The Avengers" sequel and the "Batman V Superman" movie in the works, this should be one of the biggest Comic-Con events yet.

If you're not heading to the event, here's what to expect...

Our first look at "The Avengers" sequel.

We'd be surprised if the first trailer for next summer's blockbuster isn't teased during Marvel's panel Saturday.

Entertainment Weekly just dropped a huge cover story on the film spoiling a lot of details about the movie, so you know Disney and Marvel are ready to discuss it's next big movie. With "Guardians of the Galaxy" coming out soon, it would be the perfect teaser trailer to attach to the film in theaters.

It's also likely we'll see images of concept art for the film since that's what Marvel teased last year.

An update on "Star Wars: Episode VII."

Disney will already be on a roll if they drop any "Avengers 2" news, but if they really want to take the cake from rival studios and own SDCC this year, they'll drop some news about "Star Wars: Episode VII."

We already know Josh Trank ("Chronicle") and Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla") will be directing spinoff movies, but we're not positive what they'll be about.

Even a look at the title card would be enough to send fans into a swoon.

More news on "Batman V Superman."

Some have suggested "Batman V Superman" won't be at SDCC, but it would be a huge missed opportunity if Warner Bros. doesn't reveal something when Disney may come out firing on all cylinders.

Plus, it's Batman's 75th anniversary, so what better way to celebrate than with a look at Batman's new suit? Sure, we had a tease of it back in May, but there were rumors we were supposed to have the big reveal soon. Otherwise, we'll settle for even the briefest of teaser trailers or concept art during Warner Bros.' panel Saturday.

Marvel Is Planning One New Film And One Sequel Every Year

gamora star lord guardians of the galaxy

One of the key elements in running a film studio is release date management. If you have a slate of films, you want to capitalize on the momentum of a hit, but you don't want to flood the market with nothing but sequels. And when it comes to Marvel, who exclusively makes superhero films, you don't want to alienate people who want to avoid seeing the same product over and over again. People generally like sequels, but not all of them are popular, and following the same formula over and over again can create a stigma. This is a stigma that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige plans to fully avoid, however.

Speaking with IGN recently,, the Marvel Studios head proposed to that the format they have planned for coming their upcoming film slate currently involves one sequel and one new film coming out each year. He says,

"[Guardians of the Galaxy] fulfilled our desire to do something different, to start producing, each year, a film that was the sequel to a pre-existing, successful franchise and do something new. We're doing that next year with Age of Ultron, with Ant-Man, and hope to maybe continue that model in the coming years. I don't know that we'll keep to [that model] every year, but what we're doing this year and what we're doing next year is: existing franchise, new franchise, existing franchise, new franchise. So I think it would be fun to continue that sort of thing. I don't know that we will [do that] all the time, but as a general model, I think that would be fun."

This year, Marvel continued the adventures of Captain America in Captain America: The Winter Solider, while introducing the Guardians Of The Galaxy . Next year brings us Avengers: Age Of Ultron but also allows fans to meet the brand new cinematic hero Ant-Man. And in 2016, we'll be getting Captain America 3, with the second 2016 release date likely being Doctor Strange. Meanwhile, 2017 has three release dates, and we can probably assume that one of those is a sequel (Thor 3?).

While this suggests that sequels will be a big part of Marvel Studios' plans for years to come, it also means we're about to meet a whole bunch of new characters - guys like the aforementioned Doctor Strange as well as Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. This in addition to the new Netflix shows - which will introduce Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones - means that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get crowded - and one begins to wonder exactly how many people are going to be in the cast for Avengers 3

As things stand for the potential Avengers second sequel, the potential roll call includes Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ant-Man, the Falcon, War Machine/Iron Patriot, Doctor Strange, and possibly the members of the Defenders Oh, and there's also potentially more to be seen from the Guardians Of The Galaxy, not to mention the other new Phase Three characters. You'd also need screen time for villains, which will include Josh Brolin's Thanos, with maybe even appearances from Ultron, Red Skull, Loki, Baron Von Strucker, a digital Arnim Zola and maybe even Benicio Del Toro's The Collector... all in addition to the bad guys we haven't yet met. Good luck with all that!

Here's Why Joss Whedon May Not Direct 'Avengers 3'

joss whedon avengers Chris Evans Samuel L. Jackson Tom HiddlestonBadass Digest, who broke the supposed big Star Wars: Episode VII plot scoop yesterday, claims to have sources deep inside Disney, and this time they are reporting that Joss Whedon will most likely not return to direct The Avengers 3. They go onto claim that James Gunn is being groomed by Marvel to take over the franchise. Which makes sense if we're to believe that the Guardians of the Galaxy team will show up in this impending Marvel sequel.

Badass Digest points out that James Gunn is signed to do a second Marvel movie, though the title hasn't been revealed. They also point out that most Marvel directors never make it to two movies, Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon being the exception, and Jon Favreau will never return to this Cinematic Universe as a director, at least for the time being (of course that could change). It sounds like Joss Whedon may be too exhausted to take on a third Avengers, and James Gunn ability to handle multiple characters, huge action and lots of laughs in Guardians of the Galaxy makes him the perfect man for the job.

At the Guardians of the Galaxy junket over the weekend, Badass Digest put the theory to the test, asking James Gunn if he was going to return.

About being signed for a second film, and what it might be, the director explained,

"Actually my contract just says another Marvel film, it doesn't specify."

Then this exchange took place:

And so I took a leap and asked him, "How far along are you in negotiations with Kevin Feige to direct The Avengers 3?" I have seen James Gunn in social settings and in press settings, and at this moment I saw James Gunn in one way I had never before seen him: speechless. He kind of sat there gobsmacked for a second. And then he said, "It was great seeing you!" as our interview time was up.

You can take that for what you will. The site also had a chance to speak with Kevin Feige, who denied that any such talks were talking place.

So, what do you think? Do you want to see James Gunn take over on The Avengers 3? Or do you want to see him return for Guardians of the Galaxy 2? It's unlikely he'll do both.

The Avengers 3 comes to theaters in 2019 and stars Robert Downey Jr.Chris HemsworthMark RuffaloScarlett JohanssonChris EvansJeremy RennerSamuel L. Jackson.

Why We May See 'Smaller' Marvel Films In The Future

$

drax the destroyer guardians of the galaxy

One of the many highlights of Guardians of the Galaxy (out next week) is when the gang pays a visit to The Collector. James Gunn‘s film already had shades of strange, but Benicio del Toro kicked it up a few notches. Once you visit his black market, you don’t want to leave it. Maybe the film’s biggest problem is del Toro: he’s not in it enough. They’ll likely incorporate him more in future Marvel movies, but he’s a character you want to see more of. Take one look at that guy and it’s pretty obvious he lives an interesting life.

Him wheeling and dealing with that funky outfit on could be as exciting as any huge set piece. The fact of the matter is, we need a movie about The Collector. It wouldn’t have to be a super expensive tentpole movie.  The Collector is the kind of character we don’t need to see in action. He’s engaging enough on his own.

In the past there’s been talk of Marvel movies making smaller scale pictures. They recently announced their release date schedule for the next five years. It’s doubtful any of those summer and fall releases aren’t huge blockbusters. That’s fine, of course, but wouldn’t fandom turn up for a smaller Marvel movie? A little slice of life kind of story in the life of a hero or villain?  Will we ever see those movies from Marvel in the future? “Well, someday,” Marvel’s Kevin Feige tells us at the press day for Guardians of the Galaxy.

“That’s what the One-Shots are for. With the TV stuff happening, you’re going to see more of that. Also, and equally importantly, I think there’s a place for that within the body of the movie. My favorite scene in Guardians is the seven minute sequence of the Guardians arguing, trying to come up with a plan. You don’t see that a lot in movies. Joss [Whedon] also does that in The Avengers. Those are the most entertaining things. That could be in a small independent talky movie, but it just happens to be in a big Marvel movie. Again, it’s a balance.”

That’s well put. Marvel’s better films are the ones driven more by character than action.  The Avengers joking around or arguing is infinitely more exciting than them fighting a bunch of CG aliens. That’s fun, too, but not as enjoyable as the characters hashing out their problems, and the same goes for Guardians of the Galaxy.

However, don’t we want to see The Collector wakeup in the morning, take his sweet time putting on that outfit, and go to work? Where does he live? Where does he buy his clothes? How’d he get into the business? Why does he look like Little Richard? Is he a Little Richard fan? Does he even know who Little Richard is? These are questions that need answers. Not only in a One-Shot, although that’d be more than welcomed, but in a feature length film. Perhaps he’s a less is more character, like most great supporting characters, but there’s others out there like The Collector there that maybe could work as the star of a smaller Marvel movie.

Here's The First Trailer For 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' That Was 'Too Racy' To Show On TV

dakota johnson 50 shades of grey

NBC premiered the first full trailer for the "Fifty Shade of Grey" film out next year Thursday morning on the Today show, and surprise, it was too racy to watch in entirety on TV.

The Universal film is based on the best-selling erotica series by E.L. James that started a frenzy among women when it was released in 2012. More than 100 million copies of the series have been sold.

Dakota Johnson, daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, stars as the naive college student Anastasia Steele who gets swept away by Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), a billionaire playboy who is secretly into bondage and BDSM relationships.

Beyoncé released the first teaser trailer for the film earlier this week with what sounded like a slowed down version of her hit "Crazy in Love." NBC confirmed the singer recorded an exclusive version of the track for the upcoming adaptation.

The final 10 seconds of the trailer where Grey takes Miss Steele to a torture/pleasure chamber known as the "red room of pain" were were cut from NBC's broadcast. Host Meredith Veira said they were a bit "too racy" for television.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" will be in theaters February 14, 2015. The end of the trailer may be slightly NSFW.

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Is Easily One Of The Summer's Best Movies

guardians of the galaxy gamora star lord

Marvel Studios’ head Kevin Feige said making “Guardians of the Galaxy” was “the riskiest movie” the studio has attempted since 2008's “Iron Man”  and he’s right.

Compared to Tony Stark, Captain America, and the Hulk, you probably haven’t heard of the alien team that was first introduced to Marvel comics in 1969 until recently.

Business Insider attended a screening of the new movie Wednesday before its in theaters next month, and it’s safe to say that risk is going to pay off in a big way.

Not only does the film finally reward viewers for patiently sitting through countless Marvel end-credits scenes over the years, but “Guardians” is brash, it’s bold, and it’s not afraid to stray from what you typically expect from Marvel in terms of superheroes.

Warning: Some minor spoilers follow.

"Guardians" isn't trying to be another Avengers — and that’s a good thing. guardians of the galaxyThis time around we're not following people who are supposed to be idolized. The team that makes up the group of Guardians are a bunch of self-absorbed misfit miscreants who would probably make good candidates for therapy.

We meet two bounty hunters in the form of a feisty, gun-toting Raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his faithful giant tree-like companion Groot (Vin Diesel). Rocket has some real anger issues and a slightly all-too-eager trigger happy finger. Groot can only utter one sentence (“I am Groot.”). Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) takes everything you say literally and wants to avenge a slain family. Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a deadly assassin, has some serious daddy issues. Then there's Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) who was abducted by aliens when he was 8-years-old and is now a womanizer traveling around space calling himself Star-Lord.

In many ways, they're the anti-Avengers and it works. The group's quirky personalities are a refreshing change that allows them to stand out in what is soon to become a very crowded Marvel cinematic universe.

Those end-credits scenes are finally making sense benecio del toro guardians of the galaxyThis is probably the single-most important film to watch in terms of knowing the trajectory for future Marvel movies.

“Guardians” is essentially the culmination of many previous teasers we’ve seen in end-credits sequences for Marvel films. Remember all of those teasers with Thanos, the Collector, and hints at the Infinity Stones? Well, prepare for them to come to life on screen.

The five end up in cahoots after Quill stumbles upon an Orb that ends up housing a powerful gem known as an Infinity Stone. It’s a very in-demand item that many different people in the film are after. It’s such a hot-ticket item that one man, The Collector, who we’ve seen briefly beforeis willing to pay a space currency of 4 billion units (a possible subtle nod to how much Disney paid to acquire Marvel in 2009).

Chris Pratt’s reign at theaters continues guardians of the galaxyPratt hooks the viewer from the moment you see him enter the screen throwing on a retro set of headphones, putting on an old school Sony Walkman, and freely dancing to Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” across a wide open set like a goofball. It's one of the most satisfying, feel-good openings to a film I've seen in a while. The scene takes an unexpected turn quickly that I guarantee will have you laughing.

Between "Guardians" and “The Lego Movie,” this is really Pratt’s year and it’s easy to see why. The “Parks and Recreation” star is magnetizing every time he’s on screen much in the same way Tom Hiddleston is with Loki in “Thor” and Robert Downey, Jr. is with Tony Stark in “Iron Man.”

Whether he’s dangling a man’s robotic leg casually over his shoulder, trying to channel Kevin Bacon in "Footloose" (more on that in a bit), or unsuccessfully hitting on women, he always has your attention on screen.

There are a lot of fun action sequencesdrax guardians of the galaxy

Many people, ourselves included, weren’t really sure what to expect going into “Guardians.” Is it a comedy? An action film? A drama?

First and foremost it’s an action film. "Guardians" probably has some of the most fight scenes we’ve seen all summer in a film other than “X-Men: Days of Future Past” or “Transformers.”

If you’re looking for action scenes that aren’t completely made up of explosions, “Guardians” offers a lot of fight scenes. It's as if everyone gets a chance to beat up nearly everyone else in this film.  Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) vs. the Guardians, Gamura vs.  Nebula (Karen Gillan), Rocket vs. the world, and even the Guardians vs. themselves.

While I’m not sure that they top scenes from Disney’s earlier release this year “Captain America: The Winter Solider,” there’s a satisfying prison sequence and an amusing fight between some of the Guardians early on.

A scene with Benicio del Toro and the gang is also one that should have audiences talking.

But there's one moment that will leave Marvel fanboys reeling.

As we said, the film brings together what we've seen in a lot of end-credits scenes. Knowing that, we won't say what the big reveal is yet — you'll know it when you see it— but there is a very satisfying cameo that has been in the works at Marvel for some time that we were ecstatic to see on screen.

Groot is handled perfectly in the film guardians of the galaxy grootEarlier in July, we saw a screening of 17 minutes from the film. One of the few things we were concerned about was how Groot would be handled since he only has one line of spoken dialogue, “I am Groot.” During that screening it felt like we were hearing “I am Groot” every few minutes — something that easily become distracting while watching the film. This isn’t a problem throughout the movie at all. We ended up seeing different parts of the movie edited together where Diesel’s character happened to say the lines a lot.

(In case you’re wondering, he says the line approximately 10 times throughout the more than two-hour runtime.)

This movie was made for fans groot rocket guardians of the galaxyIf you’re familiar with the family-friendly Disney brand, its easy to see the Mouse House gave Marvel Studios a lot of leeway in making “Guardians” its own without overstepping the bounds of a PG-13 film.

This is good for comic fans who don’t want a dumbed-down Disney flick, but questionable for parents who may be looking for a family film that freely uses a bit of raunchier humor.

There are definitely a few awkward conversations that could possibly arise. Parents will have to tell kids to not repeat Star-Lord when he flips off a crew.

Pratt later makes a backlight joke referencing how his ship would compare to the likes of a Jackson Pollock painting

When we previewed the film at the start of July, we noted there was a line in the film where Quill additionally referred to someone as a bastard. That appeared to be missing in the final cut.

It has a superb soundtrackguardians of the galaxy awesome mix 1

I cannot recommend the tunes from "Guardians of the Galaxy" enough. You'll want to jam to the '70s setlist after you leave the theater.

Music has such a big role in this film from the movie's opening to it's final moment. It served as such a big inspiration on set of the film that director James Gunn often played the soundtrack while the crew was on set along with other '70s tunes. You can check out all of the songs here.

Be on the look out for pop culture references ninja turtlesSince Quill was kidnapped from Earth in 1988, there are many pop cultural nods ranging from Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” to Kevin Bacon and "Footloose" to a well-placed Ninja Turtles name drop that may be a very subtle jab to Paramount’s reboot of the ’80s franchise also coming out in August.

Everyone’s been going crazy about some possible Howard the Duck reference in the film. Unless there’s a comic or image hidden obscurely in the background, we didn’t see anything (and there were two of us keeping our eyes out during the screening).

The only problems with the filmguardians of the galaxy orb"Guardians" partially feels like a filler movie necessary to lay the groundwork for Marvel's continuing expanding universe on screen.

The entire film focuses entirely on one of six power-wielding stones and the different groups of people trying to ascertain it for their own personal gain. While, yes, the movie is certainly about the five Guardians Disney and Marvel have been showing off in trailer after trailer, the film's bigger purpose is presenting the large scope of the Marvel universe and that there's much more at stake and in play than what we have seen with the Avengers up until now.

Though the film does a good job explaining these powerful gem stones, people will definitely leave the theater looking for more information unless they have a Marvel comic lord beside them in theater.

Expect to see a lot of explainers about "Guardians of the Galaxy" start to make their way online as the film comes closer to its release or soon afterward.

The only scene that felt slightly jarring was an opening sequence which asks viewers to devote a lot of emotional investment in characters you have just met. It may be a scene that's appreciated more when giving the film a second viewing.

Overall, "Guardians" is probably the edgiest movie Marvel Studios has put out yet. It’s a very enjoyable film during a summer that hasn’t produced a lot of must-see blockbusters aside from Fox’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”

In case you’re wondering, yes, there will be an end-credits scene. No, we have not seen it yet. Marvel made the decision to not air in during press screenings ahead of the film's release. In other words, we’ll be seeing it along with all of you!

“Guardians of the Galaxy” is in theaters Friday, August 1. Check out a trailer for the film below:

The 'Therapeutic' Reason Vin Diesel Took A Small, Obscure Role In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

groot guardians of the galaxy

This summer's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy is introducing a whole new cast of characters to the Marvel Cinematic (or would that be Cosmic?) Universe. Among those newcomers is fan favorite Vin Diesel, who voices the noble, intelligent Groot - yes, "the talking tree" for those of you who don't even know.

When we learned he'd only have three repeated words as his dialogue (Mini-spoiler: It's actually four words - but that fourth word matters) with "I am Groot," we all wondered why such a huge movie star agreed to take such a strange role.

As it turns out, that role may have been the very thing to pull him out of his grief after the death of best friend Paul Walker last November. As he revealed at the press conference I attended on Saturday:
For me, it was at a very important time that I did this. Because it was in December. It was the first time I was coming around humans again and the first time I was working again, since—there was something very therapeutic about, in my personal life, but I guess in my professional life, too, dealing with death, and then playing a character that celebrates life in the way that Groot celebrates life.
I took my kids to the screening to see this movie, and…something very beautiful happened in playing this role. Something that, as an actor, I never would have imagined. And that is that when my kids see trees, they refer to them as my brothers and sisters. The idea of being associated with trees like that, is remarkable, it’s so much more gratifying than you ever could imagine.
I was lucky. I was really lucky that that specific role came up.
While no role can replace the bond of brotherhood Vin Diesel and Paul Walker shared, it's at least comforting to know that Vin found a way to heal himself through bringing Groot to life.

Guardians of the Galaxy is in theaters August 1st.

Disney and Marvel have been releasing new images of its "Avengers" sequel at San Diego Comic-Con Thursday. Naturally, it makes sense for Warner Bros. to tease a new image for its next big blockbuster "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice."

Director Zack Snyder tweeted out a new image of Ben Affleck as Batman himself to commemorate the Dark Knight's 75th anniversary this year.

Warner Bros. will hold a panel Saturday to show off some of its new films including the final installment of "The Hobbit" trilogy. "Batman V Superman" is currently not on the schedule to appear.

7 Things We Learned About Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' At Comic-Con

Matthew McConaughey, Christopher Nolan, InterstellarChristopher Nolan's next movie, Interstellar, will find Matthew McConaughey playing the lead in what could be this year's Gravity. Nolan and McConaughey both got standing ovations when they showed up for a surprise appearance at Comic-Con on Thursday to introduce audiences to the film. Here's what we learned.

1. The Story Takes Place On a Dying Earth

According to Matthew McConaughey, the people of the world are just trying to stay alive. He plays an engineer who's also a farmer. "I play Cooper. Cooper's a pilot. He's an engineer, and he's the father of two children. He's also living in a time when humanity is just trying to sustain. We need food. We need water. We don't need explorers."

2. McConaughey's Audition Was Non-Traditional

"I go meet Christopher for three hours. We didn't talk about a film or anything, and after I left I said, 'What the hell was that about?' A few days later got the script, liked it, and I was in."

3. Christopher Nolan Is Keeping His Lips Sealed

Nolan and McConaughey were both tight-lipped during their brief appearance. Nolan wouldn't even reveal many of the movie's influences for fear of giving away the movie, and McConaughey was visibly checking himself about what he could and couldn't say. Nolan kept a lot of his discussion vague and existential in nature. When asked near the end of the panel if there was anything else he could tell the audience he said, "Nothing whatsoever," and emphasized that he wanted to keep it fresh for audiences.

4. We Will See McConaughey Leave the Solar System

At the end of the panel, a brand new trailer was shown. In this new look, we see McConaughey leave the solar system, launching into space and traveling through what looks like a wormhole. He also appears to visit at least a couple different alien worlds.

5. They Took Pains to Get the Science Right

Theoretical physicist Kip Thorne was the scientific expert on set, engaging in "intense conversations" with Nolan to keep him on the right track. Nolan says he was careful not to learn "too much," because he still wanted to be able to effectively explain the concepts to non-scientists.

6. The Movie Might Be More Abstract Than What We're Being Led to Expect

Nolan says his number one influence here is 2001: A Space Odyssey, a movie famous for its abstract, deeply philosophical take on space exploration. Based on the way Nolan talks about the movie, and some of the hints in the new trailer, there's a chance they're sandbagging us with what appears to be a fairly straight-forward plot. I think there's a good chance we'll end up seeing a movie that not everyone will be happy with or understand, but will be epic all the same.

"The single biggest influence would be 2001," Nolan said. "It was such a memorable experience for me to go on that journey in that way." He calls Interstellar similar in the scope of its ambitions.

7. This Looks Like an Oscar Contender

Last year, Gravity won Alfonso Cuarón a much-deserved Oscar. Maybe space travel will be the key to Nolan finally winning an Oscar nod. The movie has this broad, epic feel that feels totally exciting. We'll see how it plays out when the movie hits theaters in November.

Here's the earlier trailer for the movie:

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Director Calls Out 'Pretentious' Super Hero Movies And Shares The Secret To Filming A Gun-Packing Racoon

guardians of the galaxy groot rocket

An off-kilter genre film veteran, James Gunn had a very clear mission for “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Though it was his first studio franchise movie, Gunn aimed to avoid translating the little-known Marvel title into a typical tentpole action film, steering clear of gritty origin story trappings that turn its spandex-clad musclemen into tragic, existentially tortured victims of their own power.

“There are a lot of those movies that are really boring to me,” Gunn told TheWrap earlier this week. “There are a lot of movies out there that try to be dark and brooding, when they just seem like they're putting on — it's sort of pretentious. And I think this movie is sort of a reaction to that. This movie is edgy, certainly, but I would not call it dark and brooding.”

Also read: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Review: Chris Pratt Rides Shotgun on Marvel's Charming Space Opera

Mission accomplished. “Guardians” is deeply irreverent, featuring a soundtrack and story dominated by 70's pop songs, running jokes about “Footloose” and Kevin Bacon, and nods to alien sex threaded throughout a fast-paced space adventure. But what really separates the movie from franchise clones is its emotional heft. While “Guardians” leads with the broken family storyline of its protagonist, wise-cracking Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt), even Gunn suggests that the glue of the team is found in the shady past — and angry future — of acid-tongued bounty hunter Rocket Raccoon and his tree buddy, Groot.

Voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively, Rocket and Groot are genetically modified outcasts who become reluctant heroes; think of Rocket as Han Solo's personality being injected into Ranger Rick, with Groot as his leafy Chewbacca. Already this summer, we've seen animated characters take center stage in a live action film, but the advanced motion capture technology that turned Andy Serkis into a soulful monkey statesman in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” wasn't feasible for Gunn and his team, which made the challenge of perfecting Rocket and Groot — and making us care about a raccoon and a tree — all the more daunting.

groot rocket guardians of the galaxy“Rocket and Groot have faces that are very different from human beings’ faces, so motion capture wouldn't really work,” Gunn explained, thereby dashing dreams that filmmakers could train a real raccoon to wear a leotard and advanced computers while performing choreographed stunts (though they did study a raccoon on set).

That said, Rocket and Groot did have some human influences, including Gunn's brother Sean, who “played” the role in a performance capture suit alongside the human actors as they shot.

“We could use references and use those as a template for what they did,” he said. “So with the character of Rocket, for instance, we shot everything that Sean did on set, and we also shot every line that Bradley said, and we could use every element we wanted. We could use something that Sean did, which we did a lot, and we could use something that Bradley did, which we also did a lot. And if we didn't have that, then I just filmed myself doing what I wanted Rocket to do, and sent it directly to the effects guys.”

So when you see the little badass raccoon firing heavy weaponry and lashing out in intoxicated rage, that could be derived from the actions of an Oscar-nominated actor, one of the two brothers Gunn, or an expert animator who spent inconceivable amounts of time getting the attack just right.

“We have a lot of effects artists who are very talented actors, for lack of a better word, and they were able to create whole elements of Rocket and Groot that they just came up with in their own heads,” Gunn said. “One of the joys and one of the difficulties of creating these characters is that there are a lot of people involved. But it also gives you the freedom to do endless takes until you get exactly what you want.”

That included endless takes from Diesel, who spent days in the studio giving a voice to the charming humanoid tree with a tiny vocabulary. Gunn estimates that the actor delivered thousands of takes of the same three words: “I am Groot.”

rocket raccoon guardians of the galaxy“Vin is somebody who would go in there and he would keep going and going and going, and it would take me a long time, but I would eventually be like, ‘I'm happy with that Vin, OK, we can go to the next,'” Gunn recalled, laughing, “and Vin would be going, ‘One more, one more, one more, one more.'”

Diesel was also recorded by video cameras while he delivered his line(s), giving artists a mountain of a man to reference for the task of animating the tree.

In some sense, “Guardians” feels like a glorious put-on, as if some mischievous acidhead re-wrote the script of a typical blockbuster, filled it with throwback pop culture references and insane characters, and then Marvel just shrugged and made the movie anyway. For the most part, the studio has prioritized the growing Universe's needs and aesthetic continuity over the specific quirks of any one director, but “Guardians” is very obviously a movie made by Gunn, who once worked at schlock-house Troma, went on to direct horror-comedy “Slither” and followed up with the 2011 dark superhero send-up comedy “Super,” both of which had rough times finding audiences.

Both experiences, he said, taught him lessons that he took into making the exponentially bigger “Guardians.”

“In ‘Super’ I was very specifically speaking to a smaller audience, and in this movie I'm very specifically speaking to a larger, more international audience,” Gunn said. “So I think part of me is, I have to feel what the audience is. And I also have to feel what part of myself is telling the story. And ‘Super’ was just a different part of myself. And truly, ‘Super’ was a movie that I loved and believed in, but it was also a script that I wrote in 2002, so I was sort of reflecting, telling the story of an earlier self of mine. And this movie I wrote and immediately went into directing it, so the story I think was a lot more present and a lot more relevant to who I am today in a lot of ways.”

Tom Hiddleston Sent An Amazing Email To Director Joss Whedon After Reading 'The Avengers' Script For The First Time

loki sceptre the avengers

"The Avengers" is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

The 2012 Disney film has made more than $1.5 billion at the box office; however, the film's success was not always imminent.

When Joss Whedon initially met with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to look over a script by "The Incredible Hulk" screenwriter Zak Penn, he said they needed to "pretend this draft never happened."

After impressing Feige with a five-page treatment for what he thought "The Avengers" should look like, Whedon proceeded to work on a new script for the film.

It took several drafts and collaboration with the cast including actor Tom Hiddleston, Marvel Studio's team, and other Marvel franchise directors to get it approved.

According to "Joss Whedon: The Biography," in stores Aug. 1, Hiddleston, who plays antihero Loki in the film, wrote Whedon a heartfelt email after reading Whedon's draft for the first time.

We've published Hiddleston's letter in full along with Whedon's response with permission from Chicago Review Press below.

Joss,

I am so excited I can hardly speak.

The first time I read it I grabbed at it like Charlie Bucket snatching for a golden ticket somewhere behind the chocolate in the wrapper of a Wonka Bar. I didn't know where to start. Like a classic actor I jumped in looking for LOKI on every page, jumping back and forth, reading words in no particular order, utterances imprinting themselves like flash-cuts of newspaper headlines in my mind: "real menace"; "field of obeisance"; "discontented, nothing is enough"; "his smile is nothing but a glimpse of his skull"; "Puny god" ...

... Thank you for writing me my Hans Gruber. But a Hans Gruber with super-magic powers. As played by James Mason ... It's high operatic villainy alongside detached throwaway tongue-in-cheek; plus the "real menace" and his closely guarded suitcase of pain. It's grand and epic and majestic and poetic and lyrical and wicked and rich and badass and might possibly be the most gloriously fun part I've ever stared down the barrel of playing. It is just so juicy

I love how throughout you continue to put Loki on some kind of pedestal of regal magnificence and then consistently tear him down. He gets battered, punched, blasted, side-swiped, roared at, sent tumbling on his back, and every time he gets back up smiling, wickedly, never for a second losing his eloquence, style, wit, self-aggrandisement or grandeur, and you never send him up or deny him his real intelligence.... That he loves to make an entrance; that he has a taste for the grand gesture, the big speech, the spectacle. I might be biased, but I do feel as though you have written me the coolest part.

... But really I'm just sending you a transatlantic shout-out and first-bump, things that traditionally British actors probably don't do. It's epic.

Whedon wrote back with a simplistic response:

joss whedon tom hiddleston

Tom, this is one of those emails you keep forever. Thanks so much. It's more articulate (and possibly longer) than the script. I couldn't be more pleased at your reaction, but I'll also tell you I'm still working on it ... Thank you again. I'm so glad you're pleased. Absurd fun to ensue.

Best, (including uncharacteristic fist bump), joss.

The Most-Watched Show On TV Is Currently Without A Cast

the big bang theory

On the eve of Comic-Con, where The Big Bang Theory has always been a top draw, the uncertainty surrounding the production of the mega-hit CBS comedy’s eighth season intensifies. With only one week left until the actors on the Warner Bros TV-produced show are scheduled to convene for the first table read of Season 8 on July 30, none of the Big Bang original cast members are close to new deals.

The contracts of Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar all expired at the end of last season, and no one would go to work without a contract in place. Modern Family co-creator/co-showrunner Christopher Lloyd was in a similar position recently and sat out the first week of work in the writers room until his reps reached a new deal with producer 20th Century Fox TV. In both cases, talks between the studio and talent started pretty late, leading to the missed deadline.

While the Modern Family writers proceeded without Lloyd, with fellow co-creator/co-showrunner Steve Levitan at the helm, keeping up production on Big Bang with only the two cast members who have contracts — Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik — would be impossible.

A week ago, there were some signs of movement but I hear the communication between the two sides over the past seven days did not result in significant progress to help bridge the gap between what the actors are seeking and have been offered — both on the episodic fee and back-end side. I hear there hasn’t been a face-to-face meeting between WBTV’s negotiating team and the cast’s agents yet, and that is usually how those big negotiations get settled. That has led to sources close to the talent pegging the odds for getting new deals done by July 30 to less than 50-50. Still, as one observer noted, anything is possible.

big bang theory jim parsonAt TCA last Thursday, CBS chairman Nina Tassler did not sound worried. “We’re feeling very confident that everything will work out,” she said of the negotiations. “These deals manage to get done somehow miraculously year after year.” Big Bang plays a major piece in CBS’ fall plans, with an hourlong premiere on September 22 leading to the debut of new action drama Scorpion, often referred to as a procedural take on Big Bang. Even if the production start is pushed, there is no immediate danger of missing the premiere date.

The Big Bang negotiations are under extra scrutiny in light of the ongoing takeover attempt of WBTV parent Time Warner by 21st Century Fox. Big Bang is one the biggest singular TV assets of the company, estimated to generate up to $3 billion in profits. Nobody is talking, but industry expectations are that, when the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed, the trio of of Parsons, Galecki and Cuoco would each cross the Friends mark of $1 million an episode and will significantly increase their current back-end stake of 0.25 points. As they did the last time, Helberg and Nayyar are said to be negotiating together.

The cast of Big Bang is not scheduled to appear at Comic-Con (the Big 5 wouldn’t have had contractual obligation to do so anyway). Instead, the show is doing a writers panel for a second straight year. It is slated for Friday, with Craig Ferguson moderating. Last year, co-star Rauch was the moderator, with Galecki making a surprise appearance after standing in line in costume as Princess Leia’s bounty hunter from Star Wars.

Marvel Is About To Dominate Comic-Con With A Stream Of Its 'Avengers' Panel

Earlier today, Warner Bros. delivered in a huge way at San Diego Comic-Con.

Disney and Marvel have been dominating the superhero genre right now with news of  "The Avengers" sequel, "Ant-Man," and its upcoming film "Guardians of the Galaxy" that's receiving very positive reviews. They have single-handedly caused every other studio to frantically try and build up their own superhero franchises.

Sony has numerous Spider-Man films in the works while 20th Century Fox has the X-Men and an upcoming "Fantastic Four" reboot in the works.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" coming in 2016, but since it was pushed back 10 months we've only seen a few images of Superman and the Caped Crusader here and there, until today.

"Batman V Superman" director Zack Snyder opened WB's Comic-Con panel showing off concept art for the film along with a teaser trailer for the movie AND a first look at Wonder Woman.

Fanboys soon proclaimed Warner Bros. won Saturday at the Con.

Is Marvel worried? Not at all.

While everyone is merely talking about "Batman V Superman," only a handful of people have actually seen the teaser trailer. They haven't released any video to the public.

Marvel's panel will take place at 5:30 p.m. PDT and it's clear they're bringing out the big guns.

Shortly ahead of the panel, Marvel's Executive Editorial Director of Digital Media Ryan Penagos announced Marvel should be hosting a live stream so anyone — not just those at San Diego Comic-Con — can watch any big news that is about to come from the studio.

Game on.

Update: It looks like the Marvel panel will not be live streamed, but should appear on Marvel later this evening.

Earlier, Marvel showed a live stream of "The Avengers" cast on stage at Comic-Con.
